JOHN H. BANKE, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
WOOD-SCRAPER.
Specification of To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. JOHN H. Bannn, citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vood.:5crapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a. part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wood scrapers, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is the con struction of a device which shall be convenient to hold plates adapted for use as scrapers, and readily attachame and detachable from the handle.
The object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a partly longitudinal section of the front elevation of the inner clamp plate. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the reinforcing plate Like letters and numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
The wooden handleA is adjustably held to the clamp body, and is curved to adapt it to the grasp of the operator. This handle is driven into the socket and is further secured by a screw. The socket E is of metal and comprises the orifice 7, the screw extension 8, and the central square part having an out ward inclination. The thumb nut 6 engages said screw of the socket. The clamp- 1ng plates C B are similar in contour, and are held on the socket by said thumb nut.
The inner clamp B has an inner serrated lower surface, and arresting lug 5 as a bearing for the top edge of the scraper plate F,
and a square orifice to engage the tapering Letters Patent.

square of the socket. The outer clamp has a 1 a central orifice to receive the threaded portion of the socket, and has a flat bearing for l the thumb nut, and the lug 9 to serve as a i stay to the reinforcing plate D. This plate is of the form shown and is held between the outer clamp and the thumb nut, and the lower curved edge bears against the scraper, and serves to prevent any vibration of the same as the scraper is being drawn over the wooden surface. \Vhen prepared for use the inner clamp embraces the tapering square of the handle, and is put on in position adapted to the work at hand and 18 secured by the thumb nut, and thus the parts are securely and rigidly held. When it is desirable to reinforce the scraper the reinforcing plate is placed between the outer clamp and the thumb nut. In use the smoothing of a wooden surface is effected as is usual with ordinary scrapers.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a scraping implement the combination of the handle, the socket iece with threaded end and a tapering bearing square attached to said handle, the inner clampingplate with. square orifice and the outer clam ing plate held on said socket part, the thumbnut, and the scraping plate held within said clamps.
2. A scraping implement. comprising a scraping blade, clamping plates between which the blade is held, one of said plates having a lug in the outer side, a reinforcing plate held against said lug and bearing against the blade beyond the clamping plate, and means for simultaneously holding the clamping plates and the reinforcing plate in their relative positions.
In testimony, that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. BANKE.
