UNITED STATES Patented June 21, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 762,963, dated June 21, 1904.
Application filed April 7, 1904. Serial No. 201,994. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES O. WAGNER, of West Somerville, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Scrapers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speeification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to scrapers for removing paint or stains from or smoothing the surface of wood, and has for its object to provide means for supporting the scraping-blade rigidly, which means is adapted to be moved so as to protect the edges at the ends of said blade, so that the tool may be carried with other tools without danger of the edges becoming dulled.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a scraping-tool made according to my invention, with the parts in position for use. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view. of the knife, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the parts in position to protect the blade.
As illustrated in the drawings, the handle a. is provided with a head at, having a flat blade-receiving seat a at its end. A rectangular-shaped scraping-blade 6, having a suitably-formed scraping edge at each end, is arranged on said seat a", said blade having a centrally arranged longitudinally extending slot 6, the middle portion 6 of which is enlarged to permit the passage of the head of a bolt 0, which passes through the head a of the handle. A nut (Z is threaded on the opposite end of the bolt 0 from its head and engages the rear side of the head a.
A rectangular-shaped back plate 0 is arranged on the opposite side: of blade I) from seat a said plate being of exactly the same width as but somewhat longer than said blade. Said backplate is provided with a centrallyarranged longitudinal slot 6', also having a square-shaped enlargement c in the middle thereof to permit the passage of the head of the bolt 0 therethrough. In the position of use shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the back plate 6 and blade 6 are securely clamped together against the seat a by the bolt 0, said plate 6 being adjusted so that one end is close to the edge of the blade 7) which is to be used, thereby forming a rigid support therefor without interfering with the free use thereof. When the opposite edge of the blade is to be used, the position of the parts is simply reversed, as will be obvious.
When the tool is to be packed with other tools where the edges of the blade might be injured, the plate 0 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 5, so that its ends project beyond the cutting edges of the blade 6, thus preventing anything from coming in contact with said edges.
As the back plate is of the same width as the blade, it will not interfere with the use of the blade in a corner or against a wall, yet it will fully protect all of the corners of the blade when in the position of Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A scraper consisting of a handle, a blade, a cutting or scraping edge at each end thereof,
a back plate of the same width as said blade and having each end shaped correspondingly to the edges thereof, said plate being of such length that it may simultaneously overlap the edges of said blade at each end, and a clamping-bolt passing through said plate and blade for clamping the same to said handle, said plate having a longitudinally-extending slot through which said bolt passes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V I
JAMES O. WAGNER.
