The'invention relates broadly to cutlery and has particular reference to means for utilizing a discarded razor blade for various purposes. v
The principal object of the invention,
generally considered, is, to provide a holder by means of which either-a new or a' discarded safety razor blade may V`be rigidly'held so that 1t may be used for cutting open cartons, lo severing twine, erasing, removing paint, etc. An important object of the invention is to provide a holder equipped with means whereby the blade may be retained firmly, in
position with either'corner projectingfor active use, lmeans being, further more, provided whereby the 4blade may be readily shifted to project beyond one edge. or the other of the holder without detaching it therefrom, the parts being furthermore detachable so that the blade may be reversed or turned end for end-as the previously'used corner becomes dull andunserviceable.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder in which both ends are so formed that a blade may be secured, the end used depending upon the nature of the work to be done.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which embodies the minimum number of parts and which will consequently be simple and inexpensive to make, easy to adjust, positive in action, efficient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects and advantages, the invention preferably consists` in the detailed construction and the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

The other end of the body is formed with a slightly elongated opening 14 and a pair of slots 15 and 16 which are arcuate and 7l concentric with the inner end portion of the opening 14. At the ends of these curved slots 15 and 16 are notches 17 and 18, respectively, which are in line withthe center of the outer end portion of the opening 14. 7:
The blade used-.is designated at 19 and is of the type employed in the well known Gillette razor which,' as is well known, has a central hole and a pair of other holes near the respective ends thereof. The opening 14 8 and the slots 15 and 16 in the body are spaced to correspond with the spacing of these holes in the razor blade.
.The device' further includes a clamping plate 20 having a central threaded hole 21 3, and provided with a pair of upstanding projections or stubs 22. The hole 21 and these projections 22 are so spaced as to register with the holes in the razorblade, the end holes in the latter fitting upon the projections. 9( The blade which must, ofcourse, be initially engaged upon this plate 20, is disposed I against either side of the body 10 so that the blade will be conned, one projection 22 being received within the opening 15- and the other being received within the slot 16. A suitable thumb or other clamping screw 23 is then passed through the slot 15, thr'ou h the central hole in the blade, and -into t e threaded hole 21 in the plate 20. The en- 10u In the event that the corner of the blade begagement of one projection 22 within the opening 14 provides a pivot so that the blade may be shifted or swung along the body 10 transversely thereof so that al corn-er of the blade will project beyond the edge of the body, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The plate carrying the bladel is then slid outwardly or toward the end of the body so that the outer projection 22 will engage within a selected one of the notches 18, the thumb screw 23 being received within the corresponding notch 17, this 'being permitted owing to the slight elongation of the opening 14 which pcrnnts the projection therein to shift longitudinally of the body. After the parts have been thus arranged the screw 23 is tightened so that the parts cannot shift. The blade will consequently be held rigid without' any possibility of slipping. The slots -17 and 18 are of great advantage in view of the fact that the blade cannot slip upwardly even though considerable pressure be applied to it during the cutting operation which is performed in an obvious manner by simply grasping the handle, placing the blade where desired, and moving the device along the object to be cut.
comes dull and unfit for use the screw 23 may be loosened, the blade and plate slid away from the end, then swung transversely of the body to cause the other corner to be projected, and then slid forwardly to cause the outer projection and the screw to enter the other notch 18 and notch 17, respectively. After this the screw is again tightened to maintain the parts in the newly adjusted position. Naturally, by removing the screw and disengaging the plate 2O from the body the plate and blade may be reversed so that the other two corners of the latter may be used in the manner above described. In this way it is possible to make full use of all four corners of the blade so that maximum service can be had.
With the parts adj usted as above explained, the device is particularly advantageous for cutting string or twine and for cutting open cartons and the like, though quite naturally there is no limitation as to the many uses which will suggest themselves. If it is desired to scrape paint from window'panes and the like or to perform other operations of a more or'less similar or analogous character, the blade and plate, and of course the screw, should be detached from the slotted end of the body and applied to the other end. This is done by placing the blade 19 and plate 20 against the end of the handle 12 in transverse relation thereto, and inserting` the screw 23 through the hole 13, through the central hole in the blade, and into the hole 21, subsquent to which tightening ofthe screw will hold the blade rigid with its edge projecting beyond the handle, as shown in Figure 4.

The device will then be extremely convenient to use as a scraper.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple holder by means of which a new or discarded razor blade may be used for a wide variety of purposes. The invention further embodies a safety, factor in that when the blade is not in use it may be shifted to an intermediate position with respect to the body so that the edges will not project. It is thought that all of the uses and advantages will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art without further explanation.
While I have shown4 and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited totexactly what is shown as I reserve the right to make all such changes in the details as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: l
1. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body member having a flat -face having one end serving as a handle, a retaining plate having means thereon for holding a safety razor blade, said plate and blade being disposable against one flat face of the body and being shiftable thereon to bring either of opposite corners at one end of the blade into projecting inclined relation to the edge of the body, and means for clamping the blade and plate immovable.
2. A device for holding a safety razor blade, comprising an elongated body member having one end serving as a handle, a blade carrying plate disposed against the side of the body at the other end thereof and slidable longitudinally and swingable laterally to bring the blade into concealed position or to bring either of opposite corners at one end of the blade into a position projecting beyond the edge of the body, and means passing through the body and the blade and engaging the plate for effecting a clasping action.
3. A holder for a. razor blade of the type having a central hole and a pair of other holes near the end thereof, comprising an elongated body member having one end serving as a handle and having its other end formed with an opening and a pair of slots concentric therewith, a plate having a central aperture registering with that in the blade and having upstanding projections received within the end openings in the blade, said plate being disposed against the body to confine the blade with one of said projections received within said opening and the other received within one slot, and a clamping screw passing through the other slot, through the central hole in the blade, and into the central hole in the plate.

4. A holder for a razor-blade of the type having a central hole and a pair of other holes near the end thereof, comprising an elongated body member having one end serving as a handle and having its other end formed with an opening and a pair of slots concentric therewith, a plate having a central aperture registering with that in the blade and having upstanding projections received within the end openings in the blade, said plate being disposed against the body to confine the blade with one of said projec- Y tions received within said opening and the other received Within one slot, and a clamping screw passing through the other slot, through the central hole in the blade, and into the central hole in the late, said opening being elongated, and said) slots being provided at their ends with notches respectively receiving one projection and the screw.
5. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body member having one end serving as a handle, a plate having a central hole and a pair of projections at the opposite sides thereof, a blade carried by the plate and having a central hole registering with said threaded hole and having a pair of holes receiving said projections, said plate being disposed against the body with the blade interposed, one of said projections serving to pivotthe plate to the body whereby the plate may be swun to bring either selected outer corner of t e blade into projected position beyond the body, the body having a slot therethrough and a-clampin screw passing through said slot and engage throu h the threaded hole in the plate.
6. device of the character described comprising an elongated body member having one end serving as a handle, a plate having a central hole and a pair of projections at the opposite sides thereof, a blade carried by the plate and having a central hole registering with said threaded hole and having a pair of holes receiving said projections, said plate being disposed against the body with the bla de interposed, one of said projections serving to pivot the plate to the body whereby the plate may be swung to bring either selected outer corner of the blade into projected position beyond the body, the body having a slot therethrough, a clamping screw passlng through said slot andengaged through the threaded hole in the plate, and retaining means cooperating with the screw and the other projection when said blade and plate are shifted forwardly longitudinally of the body whereby the blade will be braced against transverse strain.
7. device of the character described comprising an elongated body member having one end serving as a handle and having 1ts other end formed with a longitudinally elongated slot and inner and outer arcuate concentric slots provided at their ends with notches, a plate provided with a pair of projections and adapted to carry a razor blade having end apertures engaged upon said projections, said blade and plate having registering central apertures, said plate eing disposed against the body with the blade interposed and with one of said projections pivotally and slidably engaged within said first named slot and with the other projection slidably engaged within the outermost arcuate slot, and a clamping screw passing through the apertures in the blade and plate and slldable along the inner arcuate slot, said notches being adapted to accommodate the second named projection and the screw, respectively,when the blade and plate are swung transversely upon the first named projection as a pivot and into either limit of their lateral movement and moved forwardly with res ect to the body.
