This invention relates to devices for holding safety razor blades so that they may be sharpened with an ordinary razor strap or hone and has for its object to provide a form of holder 5 which is adapted to hold any form of safety razor blade of the rectangular type, which are on the market and which vary substantially in length, width and thickness.
I accomplish this object by providing a holder having clamping means for the ends of the blades which are adapted for a wide range of adjustment and which also permits all necessary adjustment of the blades transversely thereof, so that all types of blades may be securely clamped in the correct position for strapping or honing and also for shaving if desired.
For a detailed description of my invention, reference is now made to the following specification in connection with the accompanying draw- 20 ing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views at lines 33 and 44 respectively of Fig. 2.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views of one of the clamping members and Fig. 7 is a perspective View thereof.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view at line 8-8 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 9 is a sectional view at line 99 of Fig. 6.
As shown in the drawing, my holder comprises an elongated casing which is channel or U-form in cross section and the sides of which are connected by a rounded back portion H. A hollow handle l2 extends from one end of said casing in alignment therewith, the sheet material of which said casing and handle are formed being preferably continuous. One side of the U-form casing is extended to form a flat side portion 10, the longitudinal edge of which is parallel to the rounded back portion, and an end wall I3 is also formed integrally with said portions. A clamping plate I4 is connected at one end by a pivot 15 to end wall [3 and the opposite end of said plate has a spring finger I 6, which engages the adjacent end of side I!) to lock it in closed position.
The longitudinal edges of said side l0 and clamping plate M are parallel to each other, in the closed position of the latter, and parallel to, and equidistant from, the rounded middle portion of the channel form back II.
A screw threaded shaft I1 is provided having a swiveled connection with the end Wall 13, and
extending throughout the length of the side I0, and a clamping member i8 is slidably mounted within back portion H, and engaged with the screw threaded portion of said shaft, so that by rotating the shaft by means of the knob I9 on 5 its outer end, the member it may be adjusted with relation to a fixed member 20, which is secured to the inner side of end wall M. The member i8 is provided with a pair of ribs 2! on each side thereof which slidably engage corresponding guiding grooves 22 in the inner sides of the back portion H, so that in all positions of adjustment of member it it will be rigidly held against swinging movement within the casing to either side.
The members !8 and 20 are each provided with a relatively narrow groove 23 in the middle of the adjacent sides thereof, each groove extending from the outer end of the member for the greater portion of its length, and being tapered in depth, so that its width decreases as its depth increases. The outer portions 24 of said grooves are of substantially greater width than the inner portions, as shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9, forming a shoulder or seat between the bottom. of groove 23 and the side of the member.
In using the above described device, the ends of a blade, as at", of the thin, double edge type, will be set into the narrow grooves 23 of the clamp members, as shown in Figs. 6 and 9, the member l8 being adjusted, by means of the screw I], with relation to the member 20, so that the blade will be clamped firmly therebetween, and as the grooves taper in depth the blade will be firmly wedged therein. Before the blade is finally clamped, it will be adjusted transversely in the grooves, so that the edge which is to be sharpened extends slightly beyond the longitudinal edge of the back I0, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The plate I4 is then swung into normal 40 position, so that the blade isfirmly clamped against the back I 0, said plate being held in position by the spring finger l 6. As the edge of plate M is parallel to the edge of the back [0, when the plate is in closed position, their edges are 45 practically coincident and the edge of the blade will be parallel thereto and will protrude to a uniform extent as shown in Fig. 1.
The blade will thus be securely held in position for stropping in practically the same manner as 50 the old type of razor. Obviously, the blade may be reversed in position to strop the other edge and, as it may be adjusted transversely, any blade of this type, whatever its width, may be held in a position in which its edge will pro- 55 trude to the desired extent beyond the edges of the side and cover Ill and I l.
If a blade with a single edge and thick back, of the Gem type, as y, is to be sharpened, its back portion will be set into the wider portion 24 of the grooves in the clamp members, so that it seats against the shoulders formed at the bottoms of the portions 2 5 as shown in Figs. 5 and 8, the blade otherwise being adjusted and clamped in position exactly as before described.
It will be apparent that any safety razor blade of the ordinary rectangular type which is on the market may be readily clamped in the holder in position for stropping or honing in the manner above described and the blade will in each instance be firmly held in position with relation to the handle, so that in this way the length of time which a blade may be used may be greatly increased.
I claim:
1. A holder for safety razor blades comprising a handle having an elongated casing extending therefrom, said casing having a channel-form back and a side having its longitudinal edge extending in para with the back, a fixed clamping member connected to said casing at its opposite end from the handle, a rod having a swivel connection with said fixed member and extending within said b n portion and a movable clamping member scr threaded on said rod and adjustable t ereby within the casing with relation to the ncent sides oi said members having blade-receiving seats permitting adjustment of a blade held thereby with relation to said longitudinal edge.
2. A holder for safety razor comprising a handle having an elongated ca lng extending therefrom, said casing having a channel form back portion and a side fixed thereto and a clamping plate forming the other side thereof and pivotally connected thereto, said sides having parallel longitudinal edges eq'ui-distant from said back portion, a fixed clamping member in one end of said casing, a movable clamping member slidably mounted within said back portion, and a screw having a threaded connection with said fixed member for positively adjusting it with relation to the fixed member, and said members having blade receiving grooves permitting adjustment of the blades with relation to said longitudinal edges.
3. A holder for safety razor blades comprising a handle having an elongated, transversely U- form casing extending therefrom and providing a rounded back portion and oppositely disposed sides extending therefrom, said sides having longitudinally extending guide ways on their inner surfaces, a fixed clamping member at one end of said casing, a movable clamping member slidably mounted in said guideways and a screw for adjusting said movable clamping member with relation to the fixed member, the adjacent sides of said members having blade receiving grooves arranged to permit adjustment of the blade held herein in relation to the longitudinal edges of the sides.

A holder for safety razor blades comprising a handle having an elongated transversely U- form casing extending therefrom and providing a rounded back portion and oppositely disposed sides extending therefrom, said sides having longitudinally extending guide ways on their inner surfaces, a fixed clamping member at one end of said casing, a movable clamping member slidably mounted in said guide Ways and a screw for adjusting said. movable clamping member with relation to the fixed member, the adjacent sides or" each of said members each having blade-receiving grooves of different widths to conform to blades of different thickness and extending in perpendicular relation to said rounded back portion.
5. A holder for safety razor blades comprising a handle having an elongated transversely U- form easing extending therefrom and providing a rounded back portion and oppositely disposed extending therefrom, said sides having longitudinally extending guide ways on their inner surfaces, a fixed clamping member at one end of said casing, a movable clamping member slidably mounted in said guide ways and a screw for adjusting said movable clamping member with relation to the fixed member, the adjacent sides of said members having blade-receiving grooves, the groove of each member having a relatively wide outer portion and a narrow bottom portion, for blades of different thickness, said grooves extending in perpendicular relation to said back portion.
