To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Armin M. Brown, a citizen of the United States, residing at St; Louis, Louis city, State of li Iissouri, have invented certain new and useful I111- provements in Razor-Blade Cutting and Scraping Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for utilizing safety razor blades, and other similar blades, for various purposes, such as for ripping threads, cutting paper and other similar material, and for scraping surfaces, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of the same adapted to receive and retain various forms of well known safety razor blades in dillerent positions for use, said device the same time allording a convenient grip for the operator.
'lhese objects I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which F gore 1 is a side elevation of my improved crevice showing a blade in one position therein, and also showing the device as grasped. by the hand, said hand being shown in dotted lines.

Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing, the reference numerals 1 denote two plates and adapted to be clamped together at a plurality of points by means of screws hereinafter described. The shape of said plates allords a longitudinally extending port-ion 2 and a transverse portion 3 and said transverse portion is cut away on one side at 4;, said transverse portion being provided with two comparatively large apertures 5 and two smaller apertures 6 adapted to receive the screws 7 and 8, said screws being provided with nuts 9 to clamp the r; in position.- 1 11 19 .55.
tudinal portion 2 is also provided with two comparatively large apertures 10 and two smaller apertures 11 all for purposes hereinafter to be described.
The cut away portions l of the plates 1 provide a recess in that side adapting the same to receive a razor blade properly clamped between said plates and projecting as shown in Figure 1, thereby providing a convenient device particularly adapted for ripping threads. In said Figure 1, I have shown at 11 a plain blade without apertures, such as may be purchased in the open market, and said blade is retained in place by being clamped between the plates 1, said clamping etl ect being produced by the screws 8. By observing the dotted outline of the hand in Figure 1, it will be seen that the transverse portion 2 when in use fits snugly in the crotch formed between the thumb and palm of the hand, the thumb and forefinger oi the user grasping the blades on opposite sides providing a firm and con venient grip.
In Figure 8, I have shown at 12 an auto strop razor lade, which is provided with notches in its side edges, aid notches fitting around the screws 8 located in the apertures 6, this construction affording an extremely firm means for retaining said blade in position. As shown in said figure, said blade 1.2 is disposed in the device upon the side of the longitudinal portion 8 opposite to the cut away portion a, so that the whole cutting edge of the blade is exposed, thus adapting the same particularly for paper cutting, pencil sharpening and the like. It will be understood, however, that said blade may be reversed and occupy the position of the blade 11 shown in Figure 1.
In said Figure 3, I have also shown in dotted lines at 13 a Gillette razor blade disposed in position in the transverse portion 2, this position of the blade adapting the device for use as a scraping device, for scrap ing furniture or for removing paint from glass surfaces and the like, it being understood that when the device is used in this manner, no blades are placed in the portion 3. In attaching the Gillette blade to the portion 2, I employ the screws 7 disposed in the holes 10, said screws passing through the two outside holes in the Gillette razor blade. It will be understood that said Gillette blade may also be employed in the portion 3, the screws 7 being used as shown in Figure 4,
and in this position engaging the center hole and one of the outside holes in said blade. In Figure 5, I have shown a Duplex razor blade 13 disposed in the portion 3 on the cut away side l. This razor blade is formed with an elongated slot 14-, and is retained in position in my device by the screws 7 disposed in the apertures 5, it being apparent that said blade may be ad justed lengthwise in the portion 3, due to the elongated slot therein.
It will thus be seen that this device is adapted for use in connection with all of the well known razor blades now on the market as well as with a plain cutting blade such as shown at ll, and that said device is adapted to receive said blades in three different positions, dependent upon the use to which the device is to be put.
In Figure 4, I have shown a guard 15, which may be inserted between the plates or the device upon one side of the razor blade, said guard being provided with recesses in one face adapted to fit between the screws 7 and to be clamped in position thereby. Said guard preferably is provided with a slightly projecting edge 16, which still further serves to protect against injury from the blade encompassed thereby.
In Figures 6 and 7 I have shown the device provided with a handle adapting the same more readily for use as a scraper. In this construction, the portion 2 is shown with an auto s rep razor blade 12 positioned therein and retained by the screws 8 passing through the holes 11, while to the portion 3 is pivoted, by means of one of the screws 8, a handle 1'? formed of metal and of sutliient rigidity to serve the desired purpose. Said handle is formed with an arcuate slot 18 centering on the screw 8, and in which is engaged one of the screws 7 wiereby said handle may be adjusted from the full line position shown in Figure (3 to the dotted line position when desired, the screw 7 atfording a means for clamping the same firmly in any desired'position. l' hen in the dotted line position shown in Figure 6, the handle is positioned for using the device as a scraper, and when in the full line position shown it is in position to sharpen the blade retained in the portion 2. As shown in Figure 7 thishandle is tapered slightly from its outer end to its inner end, and in its outer end is provided with an aperture 19 and a cut away portion 20, adapting the same for use as a nut wrench. The thinner inner end of the handle also may be used as a screw driver when removed from the portion 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letblades of different configurations thereon on I either side of said longitudinal portion or on said transverse portion, the unoccupied portion under any condition serving a handle.
3. A device of the character described, comprising two similar plates each formed into a longitudinally extending portion and a transverse portion at one end thereof, said plates being provided with registering apertures in said portions, and screws removably inserted in said apertures and adapted to engage safety razor blades of different configurations to clamp the same between said plates in a plurality of positions, the unoccupied portion under any condition serving as a handle.
l. A device of the character described, comprisingtwo similar plates each formed into a longitudinally extending portion and a transverse portion at one end thereof, said plates being provided with registering aperturesin said portions and each formed with a recess in one side of its longitudinal portion adapted to register with each other, and screws removably inserted in said apertures and adapted to engage safety razor blades of different configurations to clamp the same between said plates in a plurality of positions, the unoccupied portion under any condition serving as a handle.
