M. .1. RUTLEDGE 2,437,896
SLIDING WALLPAPER BASE- TRIMMER I Filed Dec. 29, 1944 IN VEN TOR.
Patented Mar. is, 1948 U l TED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,437,896 SLIDING WALLPAPER BASE. TRIMMER. Marcus Jesse Rutledge, Chicago, Ill; Application December 29, I944,-Serial No. 5703-25 Glaims.
The invention relates to improvement in wall paper base trimmers; and the objects of the improvement are, first, to provide a trimmer for making a clean out between wall and trim; sec- 0nd, to provide an inexpensive trimmer which will afford closer out between wall and trim than any trimmer I know of.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical side view of the entire tool; Figure 2 is a face View of half of the entire tool; Figure 3 is a vertical section of the entire tool taken on the'line 3-3 of Figure 1.
My new, useful and improved trimmer i comprises only two main parts, two bolts, and a single cutting blade that ca be a special blade or it may be any one of a number of the double edge thin razor blades which are used in what are called safety razors and this cutting blade is indicated by numeral 3 on the drawing, The front or forward end of the trimmer i is indicated by numeral 2. The front end moves forward when in cutting operation.
The trimmer comprises a pair of similarly shaped blade-holding members l forming together a blade holder and having fiat adjacent inner faces indicated by numeral 4A between which is postioned the cutting blade 3 mounted on short dowels 6. These dowels 6 are mounted in one of the members 4 or can be made part of it andthey extend a short distance out of blade 3. The outer ends of the dowels 6, to hold the blade 3 more rigidly in place, can be made, if desired, so as to extend through the holes t in the thin blade 3 into recesses in the face iA of the other member 4.
In order to hold the blade 3 rigidly, th memtightening nut are countersunk in recesses l in the outside faces of the blade-holding members 4.
To provide a handy efficient trimmer, the shape of the blade-holding members 6 is very important and therefore these members 4 are made so that the tool has a top face $3 with a rear face 40 forming a right-angle with it. The outer side faces 4D are formed or curved so that they converge toward their meeting with the edges of the inner flat faces 4A at 4E to form the trimmer leading edge. This leading edge of the blade holder which is formed at GE extends longitudinally of the holder to form a composite line composed of a straight lineal rear portion 4F extending from the rear face 40 forwardly of the tool in the form of parabolic line 4G which ends at its meeting point with the top face 43.
The straight line portion 426 extends from the rearface 40 to about a: point slightly beyond the blade- 3: and the; blade 3: is positioned with its cutting; edge at an angle to thestraight line por tion 4F and so that a small triangular p rtion of the blade 3 extends below the straight line portion '31 with the corner of the blade projecting close to the rear face 4C,
It will now be understood that I have shown and. described a new and useful wall paper trimmer which is inexpensive to manufacture and so simple and compact that it is very conven iently held practically wholly in the palm of the hand as only the rear end extends from out of the hand of the user and, because the leading edge is pointed in cross-section, my trimmer leading edge can enter the cutting blade close to a base board or other moulding around doors or windows for proper trimming in close quarters.
The two blade-holding member can be made of metal or wood or plastic.
I am aware that prior to my invention base trimmers have been made with wheels and knifelike tools on the end of dry brushes.
I claim:
1. A wall paper trimmer comprising a pair of similarly shaped blade-holding members having flat adjacent inner faces and outer faces outwardly curved toward a common outwardly curved leading edge of the trimmer, a cutting blade positioned between the fiat faces of the members, one of the fiat faces having a pair of spaced dowels extending through the cutting blade, and a pair of bolts for drawing the members toward each other to hold the blade between them, the blade having only a triangular portion extending outwardly of the leading edge of the trimmer.
2. In a wall paper trimmer adapted to hold a cutter such as a razor blade or any similar blade, a holder for the blade comprising a pair of similarly shaped members having flat adjacent inner faces, the two members forming a holder having a straight top face, a straight rear face formed at a right outwardly curved leading edge extending from the lower end of the rear face to the front end of the members having dowels for securely holding the members in face contact with each other with the cutter between them.
3. A wall paper trimmer with a detachable cutting blade comprislng a pair of similarly shaped angle to the top face, and an r members having flat adjacent faces, straight top faces, straight rear faces which extend rightanguiarly to the top faces, and the members having a narrow leading edge formed by the convergence of their outer face portions, a blade having a triangular portion projecting outside of the leading edge near the rear faces of the members, the leading edge of the holder formed by the converging faces of the members extending in an outwardly curved line from the lower end of the rear face of the holder to the forward end of the top face of the holder.
4. A wall paper trimmer holder for holding a detachable cutting blade comprising a pair of similarly shaped members having fiat adjacent inner faces and top and rear faces at a right angle to each other, the members having outer side faces converging toward a common leading edge beyond which a triangular portion of the cutting blade extends near the rear face of the holder, the leading edge of the holder formed by the converging outer side faces of the members extending in an outwardly curved line from the lower end of the rear face of the holder to the forward end of the top face of the holder, the rear portion of the leading edge being formed in a straight line which extends forwardly from the rear face of the holder a distance equal to about the length of the cutting blade and the remaining forward portion of the leading edge being of parabolic shape.
5. A wall paper trimmer which can be held wholly in the palm of the hand of a user with the rear or cutting end extending partly out of the hand for guiding its cutting position, comprising a pair of similarly shaped members forming a blade holder having flat adjacent inner faces and top and rear faces at a right angle to one another, the members being formed of cross-sections which converge to form a combined sharp or narrow leading edge consisting of a rear portion in the form of a straight line which extends forwardly from the rear face of the holder a distance equal to about the length of the cutting blade and the remaining forward portion of the leading edge extending to the forward end of the top face of the holder in the form of a parabolic curve, a pair of dowels on the inner flat face of one of said members, a cutting blade mounted on the dowels and having a triangular cutting edge portion projecting beyond said straight line portion of the leading edge of the holder near the rear face of the holder, and a pair of bolts for securely holding said members in face contact with each other with the cutting blade pressed between them.
