DEVICHFOR CUTTING OR TRIMMING WALLPAPER AND THE LIKE Filed April 19, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I l l I l l l l l I l I l l I I Patented June 16, 1936 DEVICE FOR CUTTING 0R TRIMMING WALLPAPER AND THE LIKE Arthur Alexander Gellefl", Isleworth, England Application April 19, 1935, Serial No. 17,342 In Great Britain April 20, 1934 '6 Claims. (Cl.'16483") This invention relates to thetrimming or cutting appliances for paper and the like, especially for use in. trimming edges of wallpaper.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved appliance which will be durable, simple to use and construct, andmay be cheaply manufactured and operated, also providing an adjustable andremovable. blade which can be renewed at extremely low cost when necessary.
Other objects provide a means to smooth out kinks and irregularities in the paper .selvedge to be cut,..and guide theblade whendrawn along the edge of .paper. The length .of the channel zbottom also bridging over any damaged selvedge, thus; preventing .the'cutting blade following the distorted outline where this is less in lengththan the guide. Theblade can be placed in four different. positions. before it need be scrapped; furthermore the. device cannot spoil the main body of. the paper if misused for the blade can only run outward and not inward. The appliance can also;be.used:by...a leftor right-handed person without alteration.
With the above object in view I construct a handle .in which adeep groove .or channel of narrow limits in height is formed, the bottom of -whichguidesthe blade when drawn or pushed .along edge of paper, the .top and bottom members of this groove also smoothing out anyirregularities in the paper before cutting; also-holding thepaper fairlyfirmly when the blade first strikes the .paper. -.Theidevice has also a block, an adjustable slide and: blade holder combined, and openingor series of slots in the handle to allow. the blade to project through.
- In the drawings; Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Figure 2 is a. plan view of the-complete trimmer. Figure 3 is an end view showing the bottom of the "groove employed for guiding the blade along the paper edge.
-F-'igure 4 is a rear elevation.
Figure 5 is a plan View of the handle and showing the slots.
Figure 6 is an end view showing the blade holder set at an angle.
Figure '7 is a plan view of the handle cut and shaped before bending.
Figure 8 is a front elevation of the handle showing the alternative shape of the blade bracket.
Figure 9 is a plan view of the combined slide and blade holder before shaping.
Figure 10 is a perspective view.
Figure 11 shows the blade cover.
. Figurelz is a perspective view of the trimmer with all bending operations reversed.
Figure 13 is .a perspective view of the modified trimmer.
.Like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings .a is the handle,
whi'clrcis..:sheet 'metal: cut and shaped as shown at Fig. 7, andbent upon itself to form the groove 12. Upon the top member I of this groove 2. blockjs formed asshown at 0 into which a screw 4' is inserted to provide .a fixing for the adjustable blade holderby .meansof the .wing nut h. This block does not continue right across the top member but sufii'cient material is cut away to give the blade holder .anypredetermined measure of adjustment, .and is to provide a runner for the adjustable slide.
:The adjustable .slide d .isxconstructed in sheet metal (Fig.9) and shaped to fit the block, a slot 1/ being provided for adjustment. To this slide iswformed at right angles .a blade holder. -e which holds the blade edge at a cutting angle of 45 degrees to thepaper, butthis angle is not critical for any angle between 10-170 degrees could be used. A hole is provided in the approximate centre of this blade holder together with two projections .x' to engage in the holes of the 3 holed safety razor blade. The blade j is fixed to the holder by means of a screw and knurled ut :0, "the blade cover g Fig. 11 first being added before screwing 0n the knurled nut.
The opening 7c in the handle through which the :blade passes can be either a complete cutout, or a series of slots as shown at m in Fig. 5, the webs 11. supporting the paper each side of the blade. On the underside of the handle a further blade protector is formed p from the material iorced down when constructing the opening in the bottom member. Figs. '7, 8, 10, 12,13 show an alternative fixing and shape of this blade protector.
A further blade holder 42', e will also be manufactured, Fig. 6, which gives a bevelled or mitred edge to the paper for the purpose of forming an invisible joint when the paper is attached to the walls. This modification is substituted for d of Figures 1 to 5 when it is desired to cut the paper with said bevelled edge.
In Fig. 5 the handle is shown with the blade and blade holder removed for the purpose of exposing the slots m which are cut into the top and bottom members of the handle.
It should be noted that the groove in the handle is not to exceed in height more than double the average thickness of the paper to be cut, particularly at the blade end.
The method of using the device is as follows: The blade is first set to give the required width of cut by means of the adjustable slide and wing nut; the device is then slipped on to the edge of the paper until the paper edge is in contact with the guide formed by the bottom of the groove 1); the device is then gently drawn along the edge of the paper, care being taken to ensure that the paper is always in contact with the guide s. It is also intended to reverse all bending operations on the cut shapes Figs. 7 and 9 of the handle, block and combined slide and blade holder, also the projections for steadying the blade, the trimmer would now appear as shown in Fig. 12 with the combined slide and blade holder shown at 3:, and when used is pushed along the selvedge with the blade and associated parts at the rear of the trimmer.
The trimmer shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 10 is designed to pull along the edge of the paper.
Generally speaking, the invention can be considered as a handle member of channel section having an adjustable blade fitted at or near the end of the channel, and although I have described the construction of this device as manufactured in sheet metal, it must not be considered to be so limited as a suitable handle could be formed by channelling in. wood, or any other solid material such as die casting of metal alloys, or moulded in a substance known under the registered trade-mark Bakelite, orthe like.
A modification of the invention may consist of having the blade fixed to give one width of out only, say of an inch, this being the average width of the wallpaper selvedge, or the blade could be fixed, and the bottom of the groove which is the blade guide, could, by the addition of a strip of material be made adjustable.
In the foregoing description the block 0 was placed in line with the opening is in the handle and thus restricted the movement of the blade holder across the handle. A modification consists of placing the block 0' in front of the opening, and reshaping the combined slide and blade holder to that shown at p in Fig. 13. The blade will then be free to travel acrossthe total width of the top member. v By this invention I provide a very simple construction whereby the blade edge can be used in. four different positions before it is necessary to scrap same, also providing means of easily adjusting the blade, also supplying an additional blade holder when a mitred edge is desired.
What I claim is:-
