The object of this invention is to devise a novel construction of'a wood scraper which is deflected upon itself to adapt it to be received in a handle and has its free ends deflected at an angle of preferably about fortyfive degrees to form two scraping members, the cutting edges of which can be sharpened so that it'can be used with either a draw stroke or a push stroke to effect the scraping action.
With the above and other objects in view,
- er embodying our invention.
as will hereinafter more clearly appear, our present invention comprehends a novel wood scraper.
In accordance with our present invention a handle is provided having a laterally extending aperture near one end and a slot extending from such aperture which opens through the forward end of the handle. The scraper is provided with oppositely projecting scraping edge carr ing blade portions, each of which is carrie by a flat main portion. The flat main portions bear against each other and mutually reinforce each other and also bear against the wall of the slot in The main portions at their rear tions insertable into the aperture by relatively lateral movement with respect to the handle, the main ortions passing into the slot and the latera ly deflected portions preventing movement of the blades longitudinally of the handle. a
It further comprehends a novel wood scraper wherein the cutting blade is formed from a piece of sheet steel deflected upon itself to form a loop at its rear end and at its forward end ,the marginal portions are deflected at an angle to form a plurality of cutting elements, each of which can be sharpened so that the scraper can be used with either a draw or a push stroke to effect the scraping action.
It further comprehends a novel scraper, and a novel handle to which the scraper is connected in a novel manner.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention we have shown in the accompanying drawings typical embodiments of it, which, in practice, will give reliable and satisfactory results. "'It'is, however, to be understood that these embodiments are typical only and that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a wood scrap- Figure 2 is an end view thereof showing in addition another scraping element which can be employed in conjunction therewith.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a handle which can be made of any desired material, for example, wood, having its rear end rounded as at 2 and opposite sides converging as at 3. The forward end is split as at 4 and merges into an aperture 5 which extends laterally through the handle 1. 6 designates the cutting or scraping element which consists of a piece of sheet steel folded upon itself to form a rounded loop 7 at its rear end which can be inserted into the aperture 5 by endwise displacement. The forward marginalportions of the strip 6 are deflected outwardly at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees to form the cutting or scraping-elements 8 and .9, each of which are bevelled at its free end as at 10.
It will be seen that the sides of the folded sheet metal scraper form spring jaws between which can be inserted an auxiliary scraping and cutting element 11 in the form of a flat or other form of blade having its free end provided with a flat face as at 10 so edge becomes dull by simply turning over the handle the other cutting edge is in properposition to effect the scraping action. It is are in contact with each other so that they mutually reinforce each other. Each of such flat main portions also bears against the wall of the slot in the handle and at their rear ends are provided with laterally deflected portions engaging the wall of the aperture in the handle to prevent movement of the flat portions longitudinally of the handle. By suchconstruction the metal scra or can be readily inserted into and remove from the handle when desired. In orderto assemble the parts all that it is necessary to do is to insert the scraper in the aperture and slot in the handleand drive it in position.
In accordance with this invention we provide a pair of scraping or cutting edges which are disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the handle and preferably at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees. The cutting edge-is thus disposed to the work in such relation that the proper scraping action is produced and by running a sharpening tool across the extreme forward face of the cutting members the'cutting edges of such members can be maintained in a sharp cutting condition.
It will now be apparent that we have devised a new and useful wood scraper which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while 'we have, in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that these embodiments are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z 1. A wood scraper comprising a handle having a laterally extending aperture near one end and a slot extending from said aperture and opening through the forward end of the handle, and oppositely projecting scraping edge carrying blade portions, etch carried by a fiat main portion with the flat main portions bearing against each other and carried by a flat main portion with the fiat main portions bearing against each other and mutually reinforcing each other, and each main portion also bearing against the wall of the slot' in the handle and having means engaging in the aperture in the handle to prevent movement of the blade portions longitudinally of the handle.
