lSpecification of Letters Patent. A Pa'dmltal 3;@
Application led November 30, 1919. Serial No. 264,796.
To all whom tm/zy concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN W. REED, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements 1n Razor- Blade Holders, of which the following -is a specification. iOne object of my invention is to provide\` a safety-razor blade holder which will be of simple and durable construction and which can be easily manipulated to strop'the blade therein.
Another object is 'to so construct my imi proved holder that the blades can be easily and quickly attached thereto and removed therefrom.
A further object is to so construct my invention that it canl be easily cleaned and manufactured at a low cost.
I1`hese objects, and other-advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, l
attain in the following manner, reference ybeing had to the accompanying drawings in whichj Figure 1 Vis a top plan view of my improved holder having a safety-razor blade secured thereto, i l
`Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, v
Fig. 3 is an end view looking in .the direcation of the right hand end of the holder shown in Figs. 1 andi2, and i ,v
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal elevation showinghow the main body portion can be made lin the forml of a die casting in which the blade anchoring pins aremade integral in distinction to being madeindependent, as shown in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. I
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive. of the drawing, 5 represents the main body portion or section which throughout the major portion of its length is half-elliptical in cross section and has an upper Hat surface 6.
A head 7 is formed at one end of the main body portion and projects above the upper dat surface 6 and provides a shoulder 8 which is inclined or beveled in the direction of the extreme end portion 9.
Two pins 10 and 11 are secured within the main body portion 5 and extend upwardly beyond the upper surface 6 and at an ineline substantially parallel to the incline of the shoulder 8. These pins 10 and 11 are adapted to project through the holes 12 and 13 in a saety-razor'blade 11, such holes being provided in certain well known types of safety-razor blades.
The razor blade 14 `is adapted tol rest against the upper lat surface 6 and the vpins l() andv 11 prevent the movement of the blade in a plane parallel with the plane of the surface 6.
A clamping section 15 v has a lower fiat surface 16 which is adapted to engage the upper surface of the razor blade and this clampingvsection has two holes 17 and 16 adapted to receivethe upper ends of the vpins 10 and'11, said holes 17 and 18 preferably extending at an incline to the lower flat surface 16 so' that the pins 10 and 11, holes 12 and 13, and holes 1'? and 18 will lregister with each other, as v clearly shown in Fig. 2. y
The end 19 of the clamping section 15 is vbeveled and adapted to abut the shoulder' 8pt the main body section 5. when the parte are assembled, as shown in lig. 2. 1 pre1.- erably make the shoulder '8 of greater height than the inclined end 19 of the clamping section 15 and arrange the parts so that under normal condition, ,as shown in Y i Fig. 2, the top surface 26 -of the clamping section is flush with the top lsurface 21 oi' the head 7.
By this arrangement, as illustrated, a space 22 is normally provided between the sections 5 and 15. The clamping section 15, throughout the major portion of its length,
is also half-elliptic in cross section and ollows the contour of the main body section 5.
1t will thus be noted that as the assembled I holder is grasped by the hand, any saueezing action of the parts of' the handle 23 between the razor blade 14 and the shoulder 8 will cause the end 19 ot thesection 15 to I ride downwardly upon the inclined shoulder 8 and thereby impart longitudinal thrust movement to the section 15 relatively to the length ot the main body section 5. The
pins 10 and 11, being inclined in a direction opposite to the direction oi thrust move ment, will cause said 'thrust movement to take the direction of incline ot said pins .v10 and 11 and thereby securely bind or clamp the razor blade 14C between the surfaces 6 and 16 of the sections 5 and 15 respectively.
To separate the. parts of my improved handle, so as to remove the razor blade 111,
it is merely necessary to litt the clamping section l from the pins 10 and l1, said lifting action being easily accomplished, 1f imparted parallel to the incline of the pins l0 and ll and the shoulder 8. The assembly of the parts is obvious. rlhe razor blade rst is slipped over the pins and ll and the clamping section is then applied so that the pins l0 and ll project into the holes 17 and 18.
A razor blade holder made in accordance with my invention has no projecting screws or other undesirable parts which would interfere with the convenient and comfortable manipulation of the holder to strop the razor blade, and furthermore, both of the parte when detached can `be quickly and easily cleaned.
ln d l have shown a modication of the main body section which is made in the .v form of a die casting 24, which has integral pins and 26 which performs the same function as the pins l0 and l1 above described. ln all other respects the modification of Fig. is similar in construction and function to that described in connection with the main body section 5, and ll have,
' therefore, given similar parts corresponding reference numerals.
lhile ll have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence Il do not limit myself to the precise construction setforth, but consider that ll am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.,
Having thus described .my invention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by -Letters atent is:
1. A razor blade holder including two sections, one of said sections having a pin adapted to extend through a hole in a razor blade placed between said sections and eX- 1 tending at an incline to the plane of said blade, the other of said sections having a hole adapted to receive the portion of said pin projecting through said blade, said sections having extended portions providing a handle, said portions having engaging parts thereon adapted, when the handle portions squeezed together, to impart a'relative longitudinal movement between said sections whereby the sections are moved together at their portions between which the blade is positioned due to the incline of said pin so that the blade is securely held between said sections; substantially as described.
2. A razor blade holder including two sections; said sections having surfaces adapted to engage the opposite faces of the razor blade, one of said sections having a pin adapted to extend through a hole in said razor blade at an incline to the plane of said blade, the other of said sections having-a hole adapted to receive the portion of said pin projecting through said blade; one of saidv sections having an inclined shoulder, the other of said sections having a portion adapted to engage said inclined shoulder and thereby impart thrust movement to one of said sections relatively to the other; said inclined pins being operative to convert said thrust movement into a movement which causes said sections to clamp the razor blade between them; substantially as described.
3. A razor blade holder including two' sections; said sections having surfaces adapted to engage the opposite faces of the razor blade, one of said sections having a pin adapted to extend through a hole in said vrazor blade at an incline to theplane of said blade, the other of said sections having a hole adapted to receive the portion of said pin projecting through said blade; one of said sections having a head thereon providing an inclined shoulder, the other of said sections having a portion adapted to .slidably `abut said shoulder whereby a squeezing movement of said sections toward each other will impart a relative thrust movement between said sections; said inclined pin serving to convert said thrust movement in a direction to clamp the blade between said sections; substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to Jthis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. REED.
