SAFETY RAZORS WITH RELATIVE BLADE AND GUARD ADJUSTMENT Filed April 25, 1957 2 sheets-sheet 2 United States Patent() SAFETY' RAZORS wrrH RELATIVE BLADE AND GUARD ADJUSTMENT Alexander Galbraith, Glasgow, Scotland Application April 25, 1957, Serial No. 655,075 6 Claims. (Cl. 30-54) f and a guard member so detachably associated with the cap member that a blade may be accommodated with freedom between the cap member and the guard member.
According to the invention, the guard member is connected to the cap member by an adjustable locating micrometer screw engaging the guard member near one end of the guard member and passing through a central slot in the blade, the micrometer screw having beyond the screw thread a divergent conical head engageable with a keyhole slot in the cap member near one end of the cap member, and by clip means at the other end, said clip means serving also to clamp one end of the blade between the guard member and the cap member, the other end of the blade being relatively free for limited oating movement towards and from the end of the cap member formed with the keyhole slot.
A preferred embodiment of safety razor according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of the razor.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2, but with the screw screwed down to make the blade exible.
Fig.y 6 is a plan view of a modication.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7--7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to that of Fig. 7 with the screw screwed down to make the-blade exible.
Fig. 9 is an elevational end view taken in the direction of the arrow A in Fig. 7.
Referring to all figures of the drawings, 5 (Figs. 1 and 2) denotes a handle member. 6 denotes a cap member attached to the handle member 5 (Figs. 1 to 5). 7 denotes a guard or clamp member detachably connected to the cap member 6 by an adjustable locating micrometer screw 8 screw-threaded through the guard member 7 near one end of the guard member 7, and by a clamping lever 9 (Figs. l to 5) at the other end. The lever 9 serves also to clamp one end of the blade 10 between the guard member 7 and the cap member 6.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 6, the lever 9 is double-armed and is accommodated and pivoted in a slot 11 in a handle part 12 of the cap member 6. One arm of the lever 9 terminates ina jaw 13 formed with spaced lateral anges 14 and with a central projection 15. The other arm of the lever 9 is engageable by a slide 16 on the handle part 12. The slide 16 is operable to hold the lever 9 clamped,
or to release the lever 9. The jaw 13 is engageable with the adjacent end of the guard member 7, the anges 14 being engageable with locating shoulders' 17 on the guard member 7 and the projection 15 being engageable in a lo-` 2,857,568 Patented Oct. 28, 1958 2 eating hole in the said other end of the guard member 7, and engageable also directly with the said one end of the blade 10. An abutment 18 is formed in relief on the ca member 6 in register with the jaw 13.
Referring to all the drawings, the screw 8 is mounted on the guard member 7 and has beyond the screw thread a divergent conical head 19. The guard member 7 is formed also with a blade-locating pad 20 spaced from the screw 8, the screw 8 and the pad 20 being located in opposite ends of a central slot 21 in the blade 10. The guard member 7 is formed also with a blade-supporting pad 22 located between the screw 8 and the locating pad 20 and presenting a surface inclined tothe under face of the guard member 7 and engageable by the blade 10 whereby to determine the initial lift or clearance between the blade 10 and the guard member 7. The head 19 is engageable with a keyhole slot 23 near one end of the cap member 6, the slot 23 having inclined sides.
According to the modification illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9, the cap member 6 is tted with a central handle 24 of the kind customary with safety razors, and the clamping lever is dispensed with, the end of the blade 10 remote from the screw S being held in position by a spring clip 25 attached to the cap member 6. An externally screw-threaded pin 26 upstanding from the cap member 6 passes through a slot 27 in the guard member 7 and is engageable with an internally screw-threaded socket in the handle 24. The slot 27 is the same length as the slot 23. The handle 24, when engaged with the pin 26, clamps together the guard member 7, the cap member 6 and the blade assembly. I
To assemble both constructional forms of the razor, the blade it) is placed in position on the guard member 7 with the blade slot 21 located on the Screw 8, on the locating pad 20 and on the inclined surface 22. The head 19 is now engaged with the keyhole slot 23.in the cap member 6 and the clamping lever 9 (Figs. 1 to 5) is closed upon the guard member 7 and is locked in position by the slide 16 or the clip 25 (Figs. 6 to 9) is closed upon the guard member 7. The guard member 7 is now securely held in adjustable spaced relation with the cap member 6, with the blade 10 oatingly accommodated in cantilever fashion between the guard member 7 and the cap member 6, i. e., the portion of the blade 10 between the jaw 13 (Figs. l to 5) or the clip 25 (Figs. 6 to 9) and the end of the razor remote from the lever 9 (Figs. 1 to 5) or the clip 25 (Figs. 6 to 9) is free to lleX.
As will be understood from reference to Figs. 2, 5, 7 and 8, by adjustment of the micrometer screw 8 in the guard member 7, the clearance for freedom of the blade 10 between the guard member 7 and the cap member `6 may be adjusted within tine limits to determine the stiffness of the blade 10, thus providing a blade 10 with variable characteristics.
