SAFETY RAZOR Filed Jan. 26, 1951 JH/UW WILF'RE'D ICU-I TER,
Patented Oct. 4, 1932 7 WILFRED I. onnnn, or narrow, onro serum nazon u ation filed January 26,1931. Serial n 511,185.
This invention relates to improvementsin safety razors. 3 V
The'essential object which I have in view is to combine with the head or'main body plate of the razoiya handle adapted to'be positionedat substantially a right angle to c the head when the razor-is being used to shave, and to be swung or adjusted into a position substantially parallel withthe head when the razor .is' o be put in a small box or to-be carried in'the pocket, and to combine with these' parts a suitable fastening device to secure the handle in its right angle position'and to release it to enable it to be.
swung into its parallel position.
By virtue of these'improvements I produce a safety razor which, when not in use,
may be folded in the mannerstated to bring its partswithin asmall compass for convenience, as when carried in ones'pocket.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a'plan view of myimproved razorwith its handle inworking position.
. Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the razor and its handle and fastening device. I
Figure 3 is" a'longitudinal sectional 'view taken'on the line 3-3 inFigure 1. V
Figure a isa similar view to Figure 1, but "with the handle adjusted to its parallel or packing position. p
Figure 5 is an elevation looking at the clamping plate with its comb or teeth, with the handle and its fastening parts in cross- 8 section, on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. v .Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 1 showing the collarand handle, on an enlarged scale.
' Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view ofthe' collar. v v
.Iteferring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the head or major body of the razor.
It is of conventional form being in outline in the nature of a parallelogram. Its distinc- 4 tive feature is, however, the addition of a threaded. stud indicated at 2, which extendsv from the head, and'is preferably integral therewith. The ofliceof this threaded stud is that of furnishing a means upon which a col- '50 lar 3 is mounted or secured.
As more clearly seen in Figures 5 and 7 this collar has a flat shank 1 adapted toenter in the space between the bifurcations 5' of the handle '6. In order to pivot the handle J bifmcations to the shank l, pivot pins 7*are inserted through openings in the bifurcations and thence into the shank 4, as seen 1n Figure 3. a
blade-clamping plate or comb 8 is i A placed on the stud 2 between the collar 3 and the head 1, sothat a blade 9 may be clamped between the comb and the head.
Referringnow to one fasteningmeans for connecting the handle rigidly with the'shank 4 of the collar 3, it will be noted that the numeral 10 indicates a pin or bolt-like device. 'Ihe handle properis hollow to receive this pin. Its outer end is equipped with a knurled finger piece 11 securedas byapin 12, so that one can rotate the pin by applying his fingers to this knurled piece. Theother end isthreaded-as indicated at 13 and adaptedto be screwed into the shank 4 of the collar I Thus when the razor is. to be used for sh'avin-gthehandle is rigidly positioned and held asseen ror instance in Figure 1. But when the handle is to be folded with respect to the head, as seen in Figure 4, the pin 10 is manipulated by theknurled piece 11 and screwed out of the shank of the collar 3,
and willoccupy the position shown in Figure 4: In swinging the handle from its right angle to its parallelp'osition, with respect to the head, the handle turns-on the pivots 7, a which are eccentrically positioned as seen. in Figures 1,4 and5, the more readily to permit the handle to swing up closely to the general head of the device.
.I would have it understood that the particular fastening means heredescribed "is the preferable one, but that any other fastening'means applicable is contemplated and is withinmy invention.
It will now be seen that the parts of this improved razor may be'readily assembled, and due'to their simplicity are capable of economical production; that either a special form of head piece and comb, between which the razor blade is held, may be used, or that 1 f r r r 1 1,381,659- 7 z the now rather common or conventional types I 70f head P e and-Comb pieces may be com,
.- v 'e with my handle device.
Theechie'f features to which my invention is directed are themeans" for pivoting the handle 'on' its mounting and a fastening 7 means by; Which the handle is held firmly against"any swinging movement hen she razor-is to be; used, but which ineans will permit of quickly unlocking the handle so v V that itmay swing'on its pivots and be placed w r r; j 1
substantiallyparallelto the head to reduce V its compass for-purposes of utilizing a small 3 container or otherwise making itconvenient 1't0. be placed 'inones pocket if thatbede "sired; r Q ,It will-be understood that I desire to c0rn-' 1 prehend- Within the scope of myinvention all a 7- the modificati'ons necessary toadapt it to uarying conditions anduses; j l v 1 Having' thus fully described vany inven= What I claim as'n'e'W and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
