UNITED STATES BENJAMIN B. TROMBLEY,
OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION TOOL.
Application led January 18, 1924. Serial No. 687,091.
T all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. TRoM-' BLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Combination Tools, of which the following is a specification.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide a tool of novel construction, to permit of its use in a number of capacities, the tool being susceptible of use as a putty knife, a screw-driver, and a tack-puller.
More specifically stated, the invention contemplates the provision of a tool embodying a slotted handle, and a blade pivoted at an appropriate point in its length on said handle, so that either end of the blade can be arranged in an extended or projecting position for use, one end of the blade being relatively wide for use as a puttyknife, while the other end of the blade is reduced in width and designed for use in the capacity of a screwdriver, the blade also being provided with an opening of the proper configuration to allow the tool to be used as a tack-puller.
In carrying out the invention, I also provide a novel construction of means for holding the plate fixed with relation to the handle, irrespective of which end of the blade is presented for use.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the invention residing in the construction,
combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the tool showing the position of the blade when the tool is used as a putty knife;
Fig. 2 is a view taken at a right angle to Fig. 1
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the position of the blade when the tool is used in the capacity of the screw-driver;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line L-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1';
Fig. 6 is a plan View of the blade removed from the handle; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view ofthe handle partly in section.
The toolformingfthe subject-matter ofthe present invention embodies a handle 10 which is slotted or bifurcated as at 11,A and pivotally associated with this handle is a tool blade as shown. As shown in Fig. 5, the bifucation extends substantially the entire length of the handle and is formed with a laterally extending shoulder at one side of the base of the bifurcation, the shoulder being indicated at 11 against which shoulder the narrower and longer end 13 of the blade is intended to strike when folded in, as shown in Fig. 1. This blade is pivoted within the slot 11 at a point approximately midway between the ends of the blade, and this blade is of a length to permit either end thereof to be positioned within the slot 11 with the other end of the blade projected beyond the end of the handle for use. It is of course to be understood that the blade is designed for a twofold purpose, one end 12 being relatively wide and tapered adjacent its forward edge to permit of its use in the capacity of a putty knife, while the other end 13 of the blade is gradually reduced in width and tapered at its free edge giving this portionv of the tool an outline similar to a screw-driver shank, so that the blade can be used in this capacity. The larger end 12 is also provided with an opening 14; of a shape to permit this tool to be used as a tack puller. Either end of the blade can be swung to a position for use, at which time the other end of the blade is positioned within the slot 11 of the handle.
Any suitable means may be employed to hold the blade fixed relative to the handle while the tool is in use, but I preferably make use of a pivoted latch 15 arranged to operate within a longitudinal slot 16 formed in one side of the handle. This latch is provided with a cam head 17 which is adapted to be received by a slot 18 formed in the reduced end portion of the blade 13 when this portion is positioned within the slot 11 of the handle thus holding the blade against casual movement about its pivot. When this portion 13 is extended for use, and the wide portion 12 of the blade positioned within the slot 11 of the handle, the opening 14; which permits the use of the tool in the capacity of a tack-puller is arranged directly beneath the slot 16 of the handle to receive the locking pin l5. The tool is very useful for the purpose intended and by reason of its simplicity of construction can be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to What is herein shovvn and described, and that such changes may be resorted to When desired as fall Within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A tool comprising a handle having a bifurcation extending longitudinally throughout substantially its entire length and further provided With a slot at one side thereof and a shoulder at one side of the base of the bifurcation, a blade arranged between the bifurcated parts of the handle and having a slot therein, a pivot extending through the ends of the handle and blade, a latch pivoted to the handle and operated in the slot thereof and having a cam surface movable through the slot in the blade and engageable with the opposite side of the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
.BENJAMIN B. TROMBLEY.
