Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2,1922.
Application filed November 16, 1920. Serial No. 424,392.
To all whom t may concer-n` Be it known that I, ELBIE VELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a combination tool.
My object is to produce a single tool which 'better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
1n the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a combination tool constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device employed as a caliper.
Figure 3 is a view showing the device employed as a square.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1. l
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view through the upper end of one of the arms of the tool, showing the manner in which the head block is adjustably sustained on said arm.
All of the elements constituting my improvement are preferably constructed from metal; steel preferred. The tool, in its entirety is indicated by the numeral 1, and comprises what I will term a base member 2 which is substantially rectangular in cross section, and which has at its ends substantially rectangular arms 3 and 4 arranged at a right angle with respect to the base and projected therefrom in the same direction.
The base 2 has its inner edge depressed and formed with the said depression is a pocket to receive a level bulb 5 therein. In a like manner, the arm 4 has its inner edge depressed and formed with a pocket which receives therein a level bulb 6.
The arm 3, adjacent kto the outer end therelblock-like head 8. A screw 9 passes through the outer end of the said arm 3 and contacts with the shank 7, for holding the block on the tool. Y
The arm 4 is of a greater length than the arm' 3, having its outer portion thickened, as at 10. Preferably, but not necessarily, one of the sides of the thickened portion 10 is removable, the said portion being indicated hy the numeral 11, the securing means for the detachable side 11 being indicated by the numeral 12. The thickened portion 10 has a transversely arranged substantially rectangular opening therethrough, for the reception of a slidable blade 13. rlhe blade is in the nature of a rule, being divided into inches and fractions thereof, as indicated by the numeral14. The blade has its end received in the body of the tool and provided with'a head 15, the inner edge of the said head being preferably bifurcated to straddle the end of the blade, and being riveted to the said blade, as at 16. By reference to the drawings, it will be noted that the elements 8 and 15, which I have referred to as heads, are of a thickness corresponding to that of the arm 3 and the base 2, and the head 15, when the blade 13 is moved inward of the tool is designed to contact with the head 8, in which instance the outer end of the blade is wholly received in the slot or pocket in the thickened portion of the arm 4.
rlhe outer end of the arm 4 has a threaded opening whichpcommunicates with the pocket or opening that receives the blade, and in this threaded opening there is screwed the shank of a winged bolt 17, which binding on the outer edge of the rule blade, will hold the same properly adjusted with respect to the arm 4. The rule blade is arranged at a true right angle with respect to the arms 3 and 4, the slot or pocket, through which the said blade passes being properly proportioned to snugly receive the blade therein, and to hold 4the said blade at such angle. rlhe head 15 on the blade is disposed approximately centrally thereof, and will limit the outward movement of the blade through this opening in the thickened end 10 of the arm 4.
The device can be used as a caliper, vby moving the blade to bring the head thereof away from the head of the arm 3, and there- (sin after adjusting the said blade with respect to the article engaged between the head 8 and the head 15. rThe blade can be readily employed as a rule. The tool can be employed as a level by arranging either the base 2 or the arm 4 on the wall or on the article to be leveled. The thickened portion of the arm l permits of the inner edge thereof being arranged against the edge of an object to be squared as illustrated in Figure 3.
llt is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the simplicity and advantages of the improvement, and therefore a further detailed description is not deemed necessary.
What l claim is A tool comprising a straight base having Laurea? a level bulb embedded therein below the inner surface thereof, right angular straight arms extending from the ends of the base in the same direction, a block removably secured to the inner face at the outer end of one of the arms, the second arm being of a greater length than the first mentioned arm and having the outer portion thereof thickcned7 a scale blade slidable through the said thickened portion having a head on the inner end thereof arranged opposite the first mentioned head, means for adjustably binding the scale in the thickened portion of the said arm, and a level bulb below the inner edge of one of the arms.
ln testimony whereof l ELBE WELLS.
affix my signature.
