Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1922.
Application filed January 17, 1922. Serial No. 530,004.
T (ZZZ Ni /2027241 may concern:
)e it known that l, Anni l nnoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanics Tools of the Handsaw Type, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention has for its object the provision or" a mechanics tool or device of the hand saw type possessed of a wide range of usefulness and at the same time well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 are elevations showing the opposite sides of the tool which is preferably of the hand-saw type.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation illustrating a portion of the improvement.
Figure 4- is a section taken on the line %l of Figure Figure 5 is a detail section taken at right angles to Figure 6, and hereinafter explicitly referred to.
Figure 6 is an enlarged section taken in the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is an enlarged plan of the cap per se.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
In general the blade 1 and the handle 2 of the saw are of ordinary construction, though the blade 1 is preferably provided at opposite sides with scale measures 3 and l. the measure being located adjacent to the back edge of the blades, and the measure l adjacent to the toothed edge thereof. The forward edge 5 of the handle 2, at one side of the blade 1, is faced with a steel strip 6, disposed at right armies to the back edge of the blade 1 for squaring purposes. The forward edge 7 of the handle 2 at the opposite side of the blade 1 is also preferably disposed at right angles to the back of the blade. At the. same side of the blade as the said edge 7 is provided an arcuate scale 8. Also at the same side of the blade 1 the handle 2 is recessed, as designated by 9 to accommodate a rotary body 10, of steel or other appropriate material which is arranged and movable alongside of and close to the blade 1. The said body 10 is turnable about a pin 11, preferably of angular form in cross-section throughout its length, which is strongly held against turning by its snug arrangement in an angular ape true 1 in the blade 1, and is disposed in an angular aperture 13 in a peripherallytoothed disk 14 so as to hold said disk against turning; .the disk 14 being retained on the pin 11 by a washer 15 and a screw 16. At one end the pin 11 is provided with a threaded shank 17 in threaded engagement with a flanged andkerfed retaining head IS Figures 2 and 4. The disk 14 is arranged against the bottom 19 of a chamber 20 in the body 10, and in the outer por tion of said chamber is secured a threaded annulus 21. About the chamberbottom 19 is provided an annular groove 22, the inner wall 23 of which is inclined as best shown in Figure 5.
pposed at one end to the washer 15 and connected at thereto is an expansion spring 31 which bears at its outer end against the cap 32 so as to yieldingly hold said cap against and return the same to the annulus 21. Pivoted to hangers 33 on the cap 32 near the periphery thereof are pendent dogs 34, yieldingly pressed inwardly by springs 35, and one of which is normally seated in an interdental space of the disk l t to hold the body 10 against turning about its axis. In this connection it will be noticed by reference to Figure 6 that the dogs 34 are preferably not equi-distant, this arrangement being resorted to for the purpose of nice adjustment or turning movement of the body 10. The springs 35 are connected to the dogs 34 and bear against the wall of the chamber in the body 10. Integral with the body 10 and extending tangentially therefrom, Figures l, 3 and 6, is an arm for use in cooperation with the arcuate scale 8 for angledetermining or ascertaining purposes. It will also be noticed here that the body 10 is provided 011 its face with a scale 50, for oowhen the cap 32 and the dogs. 34: are
operation with a fixed pointer 51 which is shown in Figure 3 at zero, and that the body is adapted to be used in cooperation with the back edge of the blade 1. The annulus 21 is preferably kerfed at 60 to facilitate turning of the same into and out of the body 10.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that when the user of my novel device desires to adjust and adjustably fix the arm 4L0 it is simply necessary for him to depress the cap 32 to disengage the dogs 3d from the disk 14, and then move the arm 40 to the p0 sition desired and then release the cap 32, it being understood in this connection that de pressed, the dogs 34 Will be moved outwardly by the Wall 23 to disengage the same from the disk 14, also that when the cap 32 and dogs 34 move upwardly the springs 35 will press the dogs inwardly.
The arm 40 is preferably, though not necessarily, of angular form in cross-section, to receive or cradle apencil 7 0 which may be removably held in the arms by clips 71.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not de sire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
l. The combination of a blade and a handle thereon, a rotary chambered body alongside of the blade and connected therewith, and having an annular inclined wall, a toothed disk in the chamber of the body and fixed to the blade, a movable cap retained in the chamber of the body, a spring tending to force the cap outwardly, and a spring pressed dog carried by the cap and arranged to cooperate with said inclined wall of the body. i
2. The combination of a blade and a handle thereon, a rotary chambered body alongside of the blade and connected therewith, and having an annular inclined Wall, a toothed disk in the chamber of the body and fixed to the blade, a movable cap retained in the chamber of the body, a spring tending to force the cap outwardly, and a spring pressed dog carried by the cap and arranged to cooperate With said inclined wall of the body; the connection of the body to the blade being effected through the medium of a pin of angular form in cross-section extending through a circular aperture in the body and angular apertures in the blade and the toothed disk and having a threaded shank at the opposite side of the blade, with reference to the rotatable body, a washer opposed to the toothed disk and connected to said pin, and an interiorly threaded and flanged head disposed in the handle and receiving said threaded shank of the pin.
in testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
