Description

H. McCAW.
sc1ssons. APPLICATION FILED NOV- I9, 1921.
Patented Oct. 241, 1922.
in, Hafiz? j/g flaw fuililey i for the tit HATTIJE MGCAW, 0F WAD-LA. WALJLA, WASHINGTON.
scrssons.
a lication filed November 19, 1921. Serial No. 516,371.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that ll, HATTIE MCCAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walla Walla, in the county of Walla Walla and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scissors and has for its primary object to furnish the shanks of the scissors with detachable blades.
Another object of vide means, tained within the shanks and yet quickly and easily be detached therefrom, when occasion may demand.
A further object of this invention is to this invention is to proequip the scissors with blades offering two reversible cutting edges.
Other; objects and advantages will be apparent" during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. l is a front elevation of a pair of scissors constructed in accordance with my invention, v
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the blades detached from the shank of the scissors and also. showing in perspective the retaining means for said blade,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a portion of one of the shanks with the blade retained therein,
Fig. 4: is a transverse vertical section through the shanktaken on the line 4l4l of Fi ure 3,
ig. 5 is a vertical section through the same taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 3, and
Fig. 6 is "a cross section through the scissors, showing the position of the cutting edges the view being taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1. 7 v
In the accompanying drawings wherein urpose of illustration 1s shown a preferred numerals 7 and 8 designate ,the shanks of the scissors which-terminate in handles 9, the said shanks being either detachably or permanently connected together by a fastenin element 10. x,
Ircvided in each ofthe shanks 1s an angular recess 11 adapted to receive therein a blade 12 having two cutting edges 13 and whereby the blades may be reembodiment of my invention, the
14. Each of the blades is tapered toward one end andconforms to the shape of its shank, while adjacent the opposite end of each blade I have provided a pair of opposed notches 15 with the end of the blade terminating in a reduced head, as indicated by the numeral 16. t 1
In order that each blade may be retained in its respective recess, so that there will be no danger of the blade being accidently displaced from its shank, I have secured to each of the'shanks, by means of a set screw 17, a spring clip 18, which terminates at one end in a depending lip 19. Headless screws 20 also penetrate the shanks 7 and 8 and are receivable in the blades, as shown to advantage in Figure 6. These screws assure the retention of the blades within the shanks until it is desired to release the blades there from. From this construction it will be apparent that the blades can readily be detachable from the shanks when it is desired to either present new cutting edges or to insert an entirely new blade. This detaching operation can be readily performed by swinging the clip 18 from the set screw 17, which serves as a pivotal poi'nt.- Furthermore, by the use of the detachable blades, angularly disposed in the shanks, vantage in Figure 6, eflicient cutting edges will be presented. By virtue of the reversible features of the blades great economy will be obtained for this type of scissors as compared to the usual type wherein a frequent re-sharpening of permanent blades is necessary.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described is to be takenas a preferred exampleof the same, and that various changes in the shape,
as shown to ad-' size and arrangement of'parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the inventionor the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A pair of scissors comprising a pair of pivotally connected. shanks provided with recesses therein, blades in the recesses of said shanks, each blade being reversible and havterminating at the Opposite end in a depend opposed notches adjacent one end thereof, 10
and spring clips each secured at one end to each shank and terminating at its opposite end in a depending lip adapted to be received in the exposed notch of said blade.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa- 15 ture.
Mrs. HATTIE MoCAW.
