Description

C. M. BRENDEN BLADE HOLDER Nov. 1o, 1925.- 1.561.404
Filed sept. 29, 1924 2 ,snug-sneua' WITNESS:
Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITE CARL VI. BRENDEN, GF LAUREL, MONTANA.
BLADE HOLDER.
Application 'filed Septemcer 29. 1924.
Be it known that I, CARL M. BKENDEN, a citizen of the lfnited States, residing at Laurel, in thc county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented new and useful improvements in Blade Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blade holders and more particular to a device of this character which is especially adapted for use in holding safety razor blades whereby they may be utilized as paper cutters and the like. The main object of my invention is the provision of a blade holder so constructed as to utilize old safety blades of wellknown makes whereby they may be used for cutting paper and the like and when not in use folded into the handle of the holder.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a blade holder of the above character whereby different types of wellknown makes of safety razor blades may be held for use as paper cutters and the like.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a safety razor blade holder whereby a plurality of additional blades may be supported within the handle of the holder and removed therefrom when it is desired to use the same.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe novel features of construction, 'the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings7 in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a holder constructed in accordance with my invention illustrating a cutting blade in position,
Fig. 2 is a side edge elevation,
Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating the handle members disposed at right-angles to each other,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view,
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view thru the blade holders,
Fig. 6 is a plan view of one section,
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a portion of the opposite section,
Fig. 8 is a plan View from the interior of one of the eXtra blade holders,
Fig. 9 is a transverse sectional view taken thru the extra blade holders,
Fig. 10 is an end view of the main section of the blade holder,
Serial No. 740,656,
Fig. 11 is a detail plan view illustrating a slightly modified form of holder, l
Fig. 12 is a longitudinal section on the line 12-12 of Fig. 11, and
Fig. 13 is a plan view of the section of the holder opposite the one shown in Fig. 11.
In carrying out my invention I provide two similar shaped handle members 1 and 2 having channel inner surfaces as shown at 3 and provided with offset end portions 4.
The blade holder which comprises the main section 5 and the clamp section 6 are mounted upon the offset ends of the handles 1 and 2, the section 5 being pivotally mounted upon the locking bolt 7 so that the same is pivotally connected to the offset end of the handle 1. This main section 5 is formed of sheet metal folded upon itself to provide straps 8 which engage the longitudinal edges of the offset end of the handle to permit the swinging movement of the member 5. This member 5 is provided at one end with a recess 7 whereby to receive one end of the safety razor blade generally known as a Gem blade and in order to attach this blade to the member 5, a strap 9 is engaged with the blade 10 having openings thru itsl ends as at 4 adapted to align with the opening 12 in the holder 5 in which the opposite end of the holder 5 is provided with an opening 13 and the folds of the metal strap are so arranged as to permit a blade 14 to have one end inserted between the folds so that one of the end openings 15 in the blade 14 may be positioned in alignment with the opening 18. The clamping member 6 carried by the handle 2 is pivotally mounted thereon by means of a centrally threaded sleeve 16, the ends of which are turned outwardly asat 17 to retain the sleeve in position. The clamping member 6 is also provided with studs 18- and 19 adapted to engage within the openings 11 and 13 respectively for retaining the razor blades in positions. In order to prevent swinging movement of the holders with respect to each other, spaced studs 20 are carried by the clamping member 6 and engage within stub openings 21 in the main holder 5.
The threaded end of the locking bolt 7 is engaged with the sleeve 16 in order to bring the two clamping members into clamping engagement for retaining the blades 10 and 14 in position. It will be apparent that eitherA one or both blades may be engaged with the holder at the same time as one of the blades may be arranged between the handle members l and 2 while the other positioned for use as shown in Fig. l although it is preferred to have only one blade lixed in the holder at a time so that this blade may be readily swung into the handle when not in use.
The clamping member 6 is formed of a strap of metal bent upon itself and embraces the offset end of the handle 2 and is limited in its rotary movement by means of the strap 22.
The outer ends of the handles are provided with ears having longitudinal slots 2a therein, the inner ends of which are formed with an arcuate portion 25. rThe blade holders 26 are provided with clamping flanges 27 which engage with the side flanges 28 of the handles l and 2 for sliding movement. The blade holders are also provided with retaining tongues 29 beneath which the eXtra blades are positioned and the outer ends of the holders are provided with ears 30 carrying pins 3l. lhese pins 3l are engaged within the slots 2l when the holders 26 are arranged in positionwith respect to the handles. The pins are provided with flattened portions 32 whereby they may be readily passed thru the slots and then turned crosswise in the arcuate portions 35 to retain the blade portions in position.
In Fig. ll l have illustrated a slightly modiiied form of the invention wherein the main section of the holder is provided with a recess'portion at one end to receive the end of a razor blade known as a Gillette blade while the otherl end is provided with recessed portions 34k and 35 to receive a Gem blade having the strap 9 attached thereto. In this form of holder the main section is made of a single piece, cast or forged, and the clamping section 6 is also formed of a single piece and provided with a recess portion 36 to receive a part of the usual strap 37 attached to a Gem blade and the strap 9 which is detachably connected to the blade.
lt will be apparent from the foregoing that after the blade ll or the blade 1l has been positioned in one end of the holder, the handle members l and 2 may be swung to various positions for retaining the blade in operative position as shown in F ig. l or by swinging the handle members around in one menace direction toward each other, the blade may be moved into the handle of the holder and positioned between the two members l and 2 from 'whence it may be moved to an operative position by swinging the handle members in opposite directions.
lt will be apparent from the foregoing Yhat l have provided a simple and useful :evice for holding safety razor blades which .are been previously used for shaving so as the entire discarding of the lade.
"While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is:
l. A blade holder including opposed handle members, blade holders pivotally connected to one end of said handles, means for movi g said holdersin clamping position, means for clamping a razor blade at either end of said holders and means whereby said handle members may be moved to dispose the blade between said handle members or entend the same from one end of the handles.
2. fr blade holder including opposed handle members, means pivotally connecting said handles at one end, blade holders carried by the pivoted ends, means for clamp ing a blade in position at either end of the holder, means for limiting the swinging movement of said holder with respect to the ends of the handles and means whereby to position the blade between the handles upon swinging movement of the handles and extending the blade to operative position with respect to the handles.
3. A razor blade holder including opposed handle members, means for pivotally connecting said handles to one end, a blade holder mounted upon the pivot and movable relative to the handle members and also movable with the handle members, means for clamping a razor blade in either end of the holder and means whereby the blade may be moved to a position between the handles or extending from one end thereof.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
CARL M. BRENDEN.
