CLAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, IVILLARD F. DEATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a speciication.
The clamp is particularly designed for use on the tables of milling machines, planers, shapers, etc. These tables are usually provided with slots through which T bolts may be passed. The clamp is designed to be secured by means of these bolts at any desired position on the table and to clamp the work both by side thrust against an abutment and at the same time to give to the work a downward thrust so as to assure its proper position on the table.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows an end elevation of a portion of a milling table with two clamps in place thereon.

The clamp has the base block 4. It is provided with a rib or tongue 5 which eX- tends into the usual grooves arranged in the table. The base block is also provided with the perforations 6 lthrough which the usual bolts 6a are passed for clamping the base block on the table.
The base block has an inclined front guiding face 7. This guiding face has a tongue 8 which extends from the bottom upwardly to about midway of the guiding face 7. clamping block 9 has a guiding face corresponding in inclination to the face 7 and is slidingly mounted on the base block in position to move on the guiding face 7. The clamping block has a groove 10 which has a sliding` fit with the tongue 8 so as to assist in` holding the block in alinement. The tongue 8 is provided with a screw socket 11, the axis of which is in alinement with the guiding surface 7. A screw 12 operates in the socket 11 and has a shank 13 which extends through an opening 14 in the clamp ing block 9. The screw is provided with a squared head 15 by means of which the screw may be operated.
The portion of the clamping block having the opening 14 has a socket or opening 16 slightly larger than the perforation 14 and a spring .17 is arranged around the screw and in this socket and rests against the end of the tongue 8. The socket is preferably of such depth as to receive the screw so that when the clamping block is at its lowerinost position the shoulder 14a of the clamping block engages the endiof the tongue before putting excessive pressure on the spring.
The clamping block has a clamping surface 9a. It will be noted that the clamping block forms a wedge when in position on the table against the work and this wedge n iay be made'as powerful as it may be desired by varying the inclination of the suriace 7. The downward movement of the block not only exerts a side thrust on the work but also a downward thrust diie to the downward movement of the clamping block. .In Fig. 1 I have shown two of these clamping blocks one at each side of the work. In some instances, however, a mere abutment may be used for one side of the work.
What I claim as new is 1. In a clamping device, the combination of a base block having a base surface and a guide surface inclined tok the base surface, said guide surface having a tongue thereon extending upwardly along the lower portion of said surface; a clamping block arranged on the guide surface and having a groove adapted to slidingly en age the tongue; a shoulder overlapping t e tongue; and a screw extending through the shoulder and into the tongue.
2. In a clamping device, the combination of a base block having a base surface and a guide surface inclined to the base surface, said guide surface having a tongue thereon extending upwardly valong the lower portion of said surface; a clamping block arranged on the guide surface and having a groove adapted to slidingly engage the tongue; a shoulder overlapping the tongue; a screw extending through the shoulder and into the tongue; and a spring arranged around the screw between the end of the tongue and the shoulder.
3. In a clamping device, the combination guide surface inclined to the base surface,
said guide surface having a tongue thereon of said surface; a clamplng block arrangedl on the guide surface and having a groove adapted to slidingly engage the tongue; a shoulder overlapping the tongue; a screw extending through the shoulder and into the tongue; a spring arranged around the screw between the end of the tongue and the shoulder; and devices for preventing an excessive pressure on the spring.
4. In a clampingdevice, the combination of a base block having a base surface and a guide surface inclined to the base surface; a clamping block sldingly mounted on the guide Surface; a screw having engagement with the base block and clamping block and adapted to move when operated the clamping' block on the guide surface whereby a side and downward thrust is exerted by the clamping block; and a spring adapted to retract the clamping block.
