i T e all whom t may concern Milwaukee, inthe county of Milwaukee and UNITED vSTATES ROBERT NLMILLER, OF'MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. MILLER, a citizen of theUnited States, and resident of had a'considerable numberl of Vcast parts which-necessitates the formation of suitable patterns. However, it is thepurposeof this invention to provide an efficient vise which c Vmay beformed almost kentirely of standard metallic parts or parts of materials which are in every day use. Y
It is likewise .an object of the invention to provide a device, ,the principles of which Y may be employed in an ordinary carpenters bench vise, or in a metal workers vise.
With these general objectsin view the in` vention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and. arrangements of,
I. parts which will bev hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure lrepresents a planl view, partly in section, o-f a vise constructed in 'accordance with the invention, and e vF ig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on -the plane of the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawe ing, it'will be seen that the stationary jaw of my improved vise is formed by the jaw flange 1 of a right angular plate- 2,' the same being cut from a length of angle bar stock. The other flange 3 of the angle plate formsk Van attaching portion whereby the vise may be secured by a suitable bolt or the like 4 to a support 5, such as a work table or bench.
The movable jaw of the device is formed of a flat jaw plate 6 having a surface area substantially equal to that of the stationary jaw and supported upon the ends of a pair of guide rods 7. These rods 7 are spaced apart and are designed to slide through spaced openings in the jaw flange 1 and through openings alined therewith in a guide plate 8. As shown the guide plate 8 is formed of the intermediate portion of a Z plate, one horizontal flange 9 of which is adapted to be secured to the attaching flange Specification of Letters Iratent.

' Application. med November A2 2, 1920. seran No. 425,692.
3, whereas' the other Yhorizontal flange 10 overlies the head of the bolt 4 and portions of the guide rods 7.
A` feed screw 11 is also connected with thel Jaw plate 6, 1t being extended therethrough Vand having a sleeve 12 secured Vupon its outer ends by a transverse handle bar13,
whereby ahead is formed. The portion of v i the sleeve adjacent thevjaw plate 6 has an PATENT OFFICE. i
annularfgroove 14A in which the-lip 15 ofa retaining plate 16 -is disposed, said plate:
being secured by a set screw 17 'to the lower portion ofthe jaw plate 6. As the result of vsuch construction the head and kfeed screw are readily rotatable with 1 respect to the. jaw plate, but are held against axial movement away fromror through the same.
The inner portions of theff'eed screw being disposedy parallel to the guide rods 7,' are slidable through an opening 18 in the jaw flange'l and threadedly movable through an opening alined therewith in the plate 8. .I
yThus by rotating the head V12 and the feed screw 11, the movable jaw of thevise is shifted towardand away from the stationary jaw. The portions of the feed screw between-,the jaw' flange 1 and the guide plate 8 are covered by the flange 10 whereby chips and metal scraps or the'like are prevented from falling upon the screw threads of the feed screw. Y
When thel vise is to be used for carpentry work and is mounted onya wood workers bench, the upper edge of the jaws are preferably disposed and' flushed with the surface of the bench. In such a case the flange `10 of the Z plate may be provided with attachking ears 19 for securement to the under surface of the top 20 of the work bench. Such an arrangement Vof parts is disclosed in dotted lines inthe figures of the drawing.
From the foregoing description it will be evident that I have invented a veryk simply constructed device which will be quite eflicient in operation and one which can be inexpensively manufactured. Various changes with its intermediate portions substantially vertical, a movable jaw having guide rods attached thereto and ypassing horizontally through said angle iron and Z plate, and slidably engaging the same, a threaded rod rotatably mounted in said movable jaw and held against longitudinal movement therein, said threaded rod passing horizontally through said angle iron and Z plate and threadingly engaging the latter, and means Vfor rotating said threaded rod to open and close said jaws.
' 2. In a device of thevcharacter described,-
an angle iron, Vmeans for securing the same to abench With one llange substantially horizontal and the other flange substantially vertical, a Z plate secured to said angle iron .with its intermediate portion substantially and an abutment secured on the threaded rod outside of the movable jaw to limit the outward movement of'the latter.
3. ,In adevice ofthe character described, an angle iron, means `for securing the same horizontal and the other substantially vertif cal, a Z plate secured-to said angle iron and its intermediate portion` substantially verti` cal,"a movable jaw having guide rods at- Vto a bench With one flange substantially mched there@ and-passing .horizontally Y through' Said' angleiron .and Z plate; .and
slidably :engaging the same',v a threaded `:rodY` rotatably mounted. in said movable aW and`- passing through said anglefironand Z plate'. and threadingly .engaging the latter, `means;v Y g for rotating said threaded rod, a Asleeve se-2V curedto` said threaded `rod and having a.A l
circumferential groove therein, and ra', .plate secured to said movable jaw and havmgfa; r
lip engaging, saidf groove,I whereby said; threaded rod is held against longitudinal In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing I have hereunto 4setY my lhand at-Milwaukee, in the` county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin. Y
