EDWARD G. STEARNS, OF SYRAGUSE, NEW YORK.
VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1 0, i910.
Application led April 16, 1909. Serial No. 490,393.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. STnARNs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a clear and accurate specification, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The objects of my invention are: To provide a vise beam which shall be made to accurately tit the opening provided for it with a minimum amount of labor and expense.v To reduce the area which it is necessary to machine on a vis-e beam in order to have a good fit. To obviate the necessity of machining a vise beam all over by providing especially designed bearing surfaces distributed to the best advantage and so shaped and proportioned as to be easily machined or ground to a lit.
In the accompanying drawing Figure I is a perspective view of the complete vise showing the position and relation of the beam to the other parts. Fig. II is a transverse section showing the beam C in position.
Essentially the vise consists of a jaw A integral with the frame, the jaw B integral with the beam C and the screw l) with its rod and nut. As shown in Fig. II the beam C is so shaped with reference to the hole in which it fits that the bottom of the beam rests on the plane P Q and the external oblique surfaces N. and O of the beam bear on the internal oblique surfaces M and L of the frame A, no other surfaces of A and B being in contact. Thus we may say that the beam has a three point bearing on the frame, the plane P Q being regarded as one bearing, the surface N on M another, and the surface O on L a third.
As stated before the object of this invention is to facilitate the fitting of the beam to the hole P M L Q. Ordinarily such a vise beam would have to be milled all over to make it lit the hole. By my invention the beam can be made to tit both horizontally and vertically by machining the bottom of the beam in correct relation to the oblique faces N and O. It will thus be seen that I ihave accomplished my stated object, for,
starting with a cored hole which I do not machine and a beam slightly too large for said hole, by taking a light or heavy out off the exceedingly small area of the bottom of the beam I secure an accurate fit of any desired degree of tightness.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I. In a vise, means of guiding the jaws in their rectilinear movement to and from each other, consisting of a substantially rectangular opening in the rear jaw with its upper' edges filled in to form oblique surfaces and a beam C attached to the front jaw or integral with it also substantially rectangular in cross section with its upper edges beveled olf, the relative shapes and sizes of the beam and opening being so proportioned that only the aforementioned beveled portions and the bottom of the beam bear on the corresponding surfaces of the opening.
Q.. In a vise, means of guiding the jaws in rectilinear motion to and from each other consisting of a substantially rectangular beam having its upper edges beveled off and an opening in the rear jaw shaped to bear on the base and said beveled portions of the beam, all other portions of the opening being relieved so that they do not touch the beam.
3. In a vise, the combination with the front and rear jawsand means of moving them toward and away from each other' and clamping them tightly together of means for restricting said relative motion between the jaws to a rectilinear path consisting of a substantially rectangular beam having its upper' edges beveled olf and an opening in the rear jaw shaped to coincide with the base and beveled portions of the beam, but relieved so that the sides and top of the opening do not touch the sides and top of the beam.
In testimony whereof I sign my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD C. STEARNS.
