VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Application filed December 8, 1919. Serial No. 343,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENGT M. W. HAN- 5011, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a vise for bold-- ing work in machines such, for instance, as a die-shaper and has as its object to provide a vise of this character having features of novelty and advantage.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is perspective view of a vise embodying the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinally vertical sectional View therethrough.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a is the base of the vise clamped in any suitable manner to the bed of the machine and having a groove 1.0 in its upper face. F; is a plate secured to the top of the base (6 in any suitable manner, as by means of the screws, as shown, and has at one end a jaw 15 and a second jaw 25 spaced from the jaw 15 so that the jaws are in stepped relation. 0 designates generally a movable clamp having a bar 26 slidably fitting within the groove 10 of the base plate and upon one end of this bar is a jaw 35 opposed to the jaws 15, 25 and co-extensive therewith. Upon the other end of the bar 26 is a boss 36 within which is journaled against longitudinal movement a screw 37 the forward end of which is received by a nut 38 fixed in a recess in the fixed jaw plate 6. 39 designates a block having a groove in which the boss 36 slides.
The construction above described is of advantage in that as the fixed jaws 15, 25 are stepped relatively to one another, pieces of work longer than the throw of the movable aw may be clamped in position as well as pieces of shorter length. For instance,
assume that the movable jaw 35 has a throw of two inches and the fixed jaw 25 is stepped two inches from the fixed jaw 15, a piece of work of less than two inches may be clamped between the movable jaw and the jaw 15 and a piece of work of greater length than two inches but less than four may be clamped between the jaw 25 and the movable jaw. Due to the construction and arrangement of the clamp 0, upon operation of the screw 37 to clamp a piece of work be tween the movable jaw and one of the fixed jaws, the clamp tends to straighten out so that the end of the clamp carrying the jaw 35 is forced downwardly into the groove 10, and the result is the work is drawn down against the upper face of the base a.
IVhile the form of the device herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects of the invention, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to this one embodiment, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a vise, a base having a groove, a fixed plate secured to said base over the groove, a clamp having a bar slidably fitting in said groove, a jaw on one end of the bar and a boss at the other end of the bar, a nut fixed in said plate, and a screw journaled in said boss and cooperating with said nut.
2. In a vise, a base having a groove, a fixed plate secured to said base over the groove and having stepped 'aws at one end, a clamp having a bar slidably fitting in said groove, a jaw on one end of the bar co-extensive with the stepped jaws and a boss at the other end of the bar, a nut fixed in said plate, and a screw journaled in said boss and coiiperating with said nut.
