DRILL-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 11, 1912. Serial No. 682,869.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. TEAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in drill supports, and more particularly to an improved support adapted to be secured to a work bench, and permit the employment of an ordinary breast drill as a bench drill, the object of the invention being to provide a support of this character which may be readily secured to a work bench, which permits a breast drill to be attached thereto or detached therefrom, and which enables the drill to be moved vertically during its operation.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of extremelv simple inexpensive construction, which enables the attachment of any ordinary form of breast drill, and which will most efiectually perform the functions for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and ar rangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section through the upper portion of the support and the drill.
Fig. 3, is a View in section on an enlarged scale on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a view in elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a view in section on an enlarged scale on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6, is a view in section on an enlarged scale on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7, is a view in section on the line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8, is a view in section on the line 88 of Fig. 1.
1, represents a work bench and 2 a bracket secured thereto. The bracket 2 has a lower fixed jaw 3, and an upper movable jaw 4, the latter having a dove-tailed groove 5 in one end to slide upon a dove-tailed guide 6 on bracket 2. This jaw 4 is operated by a screw 7 which projects through the lower jaw 3, and is screwed into the upper jaw 4. The opposed faces of the jaws 3 and 4 are provided with transversely elongated teeth 8 which are forced into the upper and lower surfaces of the bench 1, and prevent any pivotal movement of the bracket 2.
The bracket 2 is made with an outwardly projecting work supporting foot 9 at its lower end, and at its upper end is provided with integral parallel uprights 10 which are;
spaced apart the desired distance and at their upper ends are made with lugs 11 projecting at right angles to the uprights, and connected at their outer ends by a cross bar 12. These lugs 11 and the cross bar 12 are made with grooves 13 on their inner faces to receive a block 14, and this block 14 has. an opening 15 constituting a bearing for the restricted upper end 16 of an operating screw 17. The two diameters of the screw 17 provide a shoulder 18 against the lower face of block 14 to prevent any upward movement of the screw, and a washer 19 is secured on the upper end of the screw by means of a pin 20 and located against the upper face of block 14 to prevent any downward movement of the screw. A hand Wheel 21 is secured on the upper end 16 to facilitate the turning of the screw, but the mounting of the screw in the block 14 prevents any longitudinal movement of the screw. The
threaded portion of screw 17 projects through and engages internal screw-threads in an opening through a lug 22, which is fixed to a slide 23. This slide 23 moves against the outer face of the uprights 10, and is provided with guides 24 proj ecting at an angle from the slide 23 and sliding on the uprights 10 to hold the slide against the uprights, yet permit the slide a free vertical movement when adjusted by the screw.
25, represents one ordinary type of breast drill with the breast engaging end removed. This drill is secured to the slide 23 by means of a screw 26, which extends through an opening 27 in the slide, and is screwed into a threaded socket piece 28 on the lower portion of the drill, while the upper end of the drill is held in place by means of a bracket 29 which is of the general angular form shown, and is secured to the upper portion of the slide by bolts 30 and nuts 31. These bolts 30 project through slots 32, so that the bracket 29 may be adjusted vertically according to the size of the drill, and the horizontal member of said bracket is made with an opening 33 of two diameters to receive the restricted upper end of the drill, and also accommodate a screw 34 Patented Feb. 11,1913.
' 'ticular style of breast drill, I would have it understood that the device may be modified for the accommodation of other forms of drill.
In operation, the work 38 is supported :upon the foot 9, and hand wheel 21 turned to move the drill down so as to engage the work. As the drill is revolved, it is fed downwardly by turning this hand wheel 21, and the work drilled.
When the drill is desired for use as a breast drill, it is simply necessary todetach it from my improved support, and put it to its natural uses.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
