To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, L D Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clamps for holding work to planers, shapers and other machine tools, as well as for clamping various parts to any device desired.
One object of the invention is to produce a clamp that is readily adjustable to various sizes of work and machine articles to be clamped in position, and which can be attached and detached with minimum effort.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following description, reference being had to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of a portion of a machine tool bed with the clamp in position.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the clamp consists of a horizontal arm member 1 having a lug 2 adapted to act as a fulcrum or sup port for the clamp. A vertical member 3 is attached to the arm 1 and has a hole ere tending through it to receive a bolt or similar device 4, which has a head 5 adapted o enter a slot or similar retaining means in the machine bed 6. The clamp has an ad justable member 7 adapted to slide freely along the vertical extension 3, as long as the sides of the hole 8 therein are maintained substantially parallel to the outside of the extension This-member, therefore, can be moved up and down freely by the-operator to fit any size of work, such as shown at 9 in the drawing, and then by tightening down on the nut 10, the clamp member 7 binds on the vertical extension 3 and-the work 9 is clamped in position.
It will be seen from the drawing that the action of the clamp is equivalent to a lever extending across from the work 9 to the fulcrum 2 with the clamping pressure exerted at a point in between the point of rest on the work 9 and the fulcrum. Good clamping action, therefore, can be obtained with very little effort in screwing down the nut 10. It will be apparent that the clamp can be utilized for holding any size of work Specification of Letters Patent.

up to the limit of its dimensions, and, therefore, the workman will not have to search around for various sizes of blocks to insert under the clamp arms, as is usual in ma chine shops. A great deal of time will, therefore, be saved, as my adjustable clamp elimlnates this feature.
Since the fulcrum 2 is permanently secured to the clamp, the latter can be very readily placed in position, as there are no plurality of blocks to line up under the clamp arm. of the workman and it also reduces the time necessary for getting the work in position for machining.
The foregoing description has been given by way of example, and sets forth only one embodiment of my invention. It will be apparent that various changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In devices of the class described, a lever arm having a fulcrum adapted to rest on a support, a member extending from said lever arm, a second lever arm having one end loosely engaging said member and the other end resting on the article to be clamped, and means for pressing said member toward said support to bind the first mentioned arm on said member and clamp the article in position.
2. In devices of the class described, a lever arm having a fulcrum adapted to rest on a support, a member extending from said lever arm, a second lever arm having one end loosely engaging said member and the other end resting on the article to be clamped, and means for pressing the first of said arms to ward said support to bind the second men tioned arm on said member and clamp the article in position.
3. In devices of the class described, a lever arm having an abutment at one end adapted to rest on a support, a member extending from said lever arm, a second lever arm having a hole in one end loosely receiving said member and the other end resting on the article to be clamped, and means for pressing the first of said arms toward said support to bind the second mentioned arm on said member and clamp the article in position.
4.
