Description
Patented Nov. ZZ, 1927.
J MONROE ALEXANDER', OF SPANISH FORK, UTAH.
VISE.
Application lcd June 1,
The present invention .has reference to a clamp or vise especially designed to be secured to a carpenters bench or the lilre, yfor clamping an article to the bench to permit the article to be worked on with facility.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted for use in connection .with articles of various thicknesses, to insure the lo article under operation being clamped.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp or vise of this character wherein the movable jaw thereof will be automatically returned to its initial position when the lever is moved to its vertical position. v
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, maybe ymade within the scope of what is claimed. without departing from the spirit of the invention. Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a clamp constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2--2 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device. Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes a plate 5 secured tothe under surface of the bench or table top, to which the clamp or vise is to be secured, there being provided bolts 6 extended through 'the plate 5 and plate 7 positioned on the upper surface of the bench orV tablefor securing the plates to the support.
The forward edge of the plate 7 is provided with a depending flange 8 designed to engage the forward edge of the bench or table top as shown by Figure 2, thereby holding the clamp against rearward movement as a board or article is being placed therein. Y
Extending downwardly from the plate 7 are tubular members 9 which pass through openings of the supporting surface orV bench top indicated at 10, the lower ends of the tubular members 9 being threaded to ae=y securely A 'faces of the tubular members 9, which notches define shoulders 16, which shoulders 1927. Serial No. 195,771.
coiled springs 12 that in turn engage the lower4 ends of the rods 13 that move in the tubular members 9. y 1 l These rods 13 are'carried by the upper jaw 14 oftheclamp as clearly shown by Figure 4 of the drawing and act as means for guiding the upper aw in a true vertical plane when the clamp is being operated.
The plates 5 and 7 as well as the jaw 14 are provided with aligning openings through which the rod 19 extends, the rod 19 being provided with a threaded portion 20 fitted within a threaded opening formed inter-` mediate the ends of the plate 17 as shown by Figure 4, to the end that by rotating the loc 19 an adjustment of the jaw 14 may be As shown, the upper end of the rod 19 is slotted to accommodate the lever 21, which has-offset portions 22, the lever being pivotally mounted within the slotted portion by means of the bolt 23. Disposed under the offset portions 22 is a contact member 24 that overlies the opening in the jaw 14 and contacts with one edge of the offset por tions 22 so that when the lever 21 is moved, the enlargement will move over the member 24 t0 move the jaw 14 downwardly against the tension of the springs 12, the springs 12 acting to return the jaw 14 to its initial position when vthe lever 21 is returned to its upright or vertical position.
A bearing member 25 is secured to the rod 19 and fits within the opening of the plate 7, to hold the rod in a true vertical position and insure against binding or lateral movemet of the rod when the lever is being operate From the fore oing it will be seen that by rotating the ro 19 `the plate 17 may be adjusted longitudinally of the tubular members 9, varying the space between the' plate 10ovv 7 and-jaw 14ste adapt the device-for .use rin connection -with articles of various sizes, it being understood that the adjustment is made in suoli a Way that the jaw ,will contact with the article to be clamped, so that when the lever is moved downwardly, the jaw 14 will be placed under pressure to securely clamp the article.Y
I claim:
"TflIn a clamp, a'stationaryjaw, tubular .members extending from the stationary jaw,
a movable jaw, 'rods yconnected with the movable jaw and extending intothe tubular members, means -for normally 'urging the movable jaw awayfrom the stationary jaw,
opening,A rand adapted to 'beadjusted with vtowards the stationary jaw.
aryf? jaw, said ytubular members having notches defining shoulders, a plate having elongated openings to accommodate the tubular members, the walls of the openings "adapted to cooperate with the shoulders to adjustably'support the plate'with respectto the tubular members, a rod adjustably connected to the plate and extending through the jaws, and a lever pivotally connected with the rod for moving the movable jaw In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
