UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD F. GORDON, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A. WHITE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,407, dated March 19, 1878 application filed January 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EDWARD F. GORDON, of Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Clamp, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
My invention relates to improvements in clamps for holding wood or other materials together, or to a bench, bed, or other surface while being glued or worked by hand-tools or by machinery.
Referring to the drawing, A is a standard, which may be of any required length, and may be either round or square. To the lower end of this standard is attached a beveled head or base-piece, a, which is fitted to an iron strip, B, having formed in it a dovetail slot, b. The iron strip B is let into the bench or other surface upon which the clamp is used.
To the standard A an apertured arm, C, is fitted, so that it can be moved up or down on the standard. Upon one side of the standard an eccentric-lever, D, is pivoted in the arm C, and upon the other side of the standard a jaw, E, is pivoted to the end of the arm C, beyond which it extends a greater or less distance, according to the use for which the clamp is intended, and is curved downward, and faced off parallel with the surface of the bench in connection with which the clamp is used.
The face of the jaw may be either plain or serrated. The jaw extends backward from its pivot parallel with the arm C, and rests upon the eccentric-lever D. A large aperture is made in the jaw, which the standard A passes.
The aperture is of sufficient size to permit of moving the jaw without bringing it into contact with the standard.
The eccentric-lever is flattened slightly, to prevent it from turning when the jaw is under pressure.
The clamp is designed for temporarily clamping an object, and may be used in various branches of wood-working. It is also equally applicable to the holding of metals on the bench or upon planing or shaping machines.
By slightly modifying the form of the clamp it may be employed as a bench-vise.
The clamp is used by moving it down on the standard until the face of the jaw touches the object to be held, when theeccentric-lever is turned, throwing the face of the jaw downward upon the object. This operation raises the outer end of the arm C, and causes it to firmly clamp the standard, thereby preventing the raising of the arm as the jaw is moved downward.
The standard A may be cast on or attached to the arm C, and made adjustable in a socket or collar secured to the bench.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the standard A, the strip B, and the sliding arm C, of the eccentrio-lever D and the jaw E, both pivoted in said arm, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
