To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LEE H. BRIMHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spanish Forks, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVork-Bench Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a work-bench attachment and in particular to a device for securing and. supporting one end of a board or plank at the height at which its other end is maintained by the usual bench vise, for planing operations or the like.
It is the usual practice to provide a plurality of vertically spaced openings in one side of the bench, in a diagonal line, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, and to employ a supporting pin or bolt (not shown) which is adapted to be inserted in the desired opening so as to project therefrom and thereby form a support for the lower edge of the board. Such a device is open to several objections, for the board is apt to slip off the supporting pin and to be marred thereby at its corners, whenever one of its finished edges is mounted thereon. Such a pin is also apt to become engaged in the operators clothes so as to tear the same.
It is therefore the purpose of my invention to provide a supporting and securing device for this use which will secure a board of any thickness against downward or lateral movement when mounted thereon, and Whose supporting head is constructed so that it will not engage the corners of the board and thus cannot injure the same.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to have its supporting head adjusted vertically with ease and quickly when it is desired to raise or to lower the board to be operated upon.
A still further object is to provide a securing and supporting device which may be mounted readily and conveniently upon a bench of ordinary construtcion at the desired position thereon, and one which is extremely simple in construction and comprises few parts, so as to be inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, and easy to assemble and take down for storing purposes.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a workbench having two clamps constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto in different positions; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the clamps; Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional View through a portion of the bench; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken through the same; F ig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a similar View on line 66 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a portion of the adjustable standard of the device, a portion of the same being broken away to show the manner in which the supporting head is mounted thereon, a modified form of supporting head being shown; and, Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view through a portion of the bench, showing the attaching body of the device alone applied thereto, thls attaching member being modified in construction.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a work-bench to which the supporting device is to be applied in either of the positions shown in Fig. 1. In one instance the attaching body or clamp 2 of the device is secured to the under edge of the side board 3 of the bench, whereas in the other instance, it is shown attached to one vertical edge of the board. Either arrangement may be resorted to, owing to certain features of the construction which will be set forth fully hereinafter. The attaching member 2 is provided with a non-circular opening 4, which in this instance is triangular in section, and with a fixed jaw 5 extending radially with respect to the opening. A lug 6 is formed upon the said member in parallel relation to the fixed jaw and spaced therefrom, in which a longitudinally extending clamping screw 7 is engaged. A movable jaw 8 is provided upon the inner end of the screw for cooperation with the fixed jaw, and a manipulating head 9 is provided upon the outer end of the screw. The fixed jaw is provided with inwardly projecting teeth 10 for engagement with the bench board 3 to prevent the attaching member from slipping after being applied thereto.
An adjustable head 11 is connected with the attaching member by means of a lateral arm 12, which is slidably engaged within the opening 4 of the said member and is of similar cross-sectional configuration. A radially adjustable set screw 13 is mounted within the attaching member for engagement with the arm 12 to secure the same in adjusted position within the opening 4. The head 11 is provided with a vertical, noncircular opening 14; in which a supporting standard 15 of similar section is mounted for sliding movement. The standard 15 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced notches 16, each of which has its upper wall disposed at right angles to the axis of'the standard and its opposite wall at an oblique angle thereto. The head 11 is provided with a lateral recess 17 in communication with the opening lt in which a releasable locking member or pawl 18 is pivotally mounted. The inner engaging end 19 of this pawl is inclined upwardly and adapted for engagement within any one of the standard notches 16, whereby it will be forced upwardly and outwardly into'inoperative position by the inclined face of each notch as the standard is raised, but will engage the upper face of any one of the notches to support the standard and to prevent its sinking until the pawl is released, the inner end of the pawl being supportedv by the lower wall 20 of the recess 17 in operative position. A spring 21 serves normally to maintain the pawl in its operative position. The outer end of the pawl projects from the head 11 to form a fingerpiece 22 by which the-pawl may be manipulatedto withdraw its engaging extremity fromoperative position, and thus to permit the standard to f be lowered.
A supporting head 23 is mounted detachably upon the upper end of the adjustable standard 15 and includes a horizontal supporting shelf 24c and an upwardly projecting guard flange 25, which latter is adapted to be disposed outwardly from the bench. A depending lug 24 is formed upon the shelf 2a of the supporting head for engagement within'a socket 24L in'the upper end of the standard 15. The shelf 24 is adapted to support the lower edge of a board or plank, such as indicated by the numeral 26,-at one end of the same, whereas the other end thereofis mounted in the usual manner within a vise 27. The flange 25 of the supporting head will secure the board against horizontal movement away from the adjacent side board of the bench. In order that the corners of the board, at the lower edge thereof, will not be damaged by engagement with the supporting head, the upper face 28 of the shelf 2 1 and the inner face 29 of the flange 25 are formed convex, whereby the corners of the board cannot engage the head when properly mounted thereon.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the attaching member of the device may be secured to one side board of the bench, either at its lower edge or at one vertical edge, whichever may be desirable. The standard 15 may be set in vertical position by withdrawingthe arm 12 from the attaching member opening and then resetting the same in the proper angularly adjusted position. The said arm may be adjusted longitudinally within the attaching member opening to accommodate the supporting head 23 to the i thickness of the board tobe mounted thereon. The guard flange 29 is adapted to cooperate with the adjacent face ofthe side board 3 to prevent horizontal movement of the board. The standard 15 may be adjusted readily to raise or lower the board in order that its upper edge may be maintained in the proper position for planing, sawing, or
like operations.
In Fig. 7, a modified form of supporting head is disclosed. This head has its shelf 30 inclined to the vertical and provided with a depending lug 31 for detachable engagement within the socket of the adjustable Standard, The guard flange 32 of this form of head is vertically disposed like the guard flange of the previously described form of supporting head, but is curved on an arc of smaller radius. formed at the juncture of the shelf and guard flange sothat the acute edgeof a beveled board, such as indicated by the nujmeral 34, may be mounted between the shelf and flange without danger of contacting with the bottom of the recess. The finished edge of the board therefore, will not be marred. Either form of the supporting head may be used as the occasion demands.
A modified form of attaching member is shown in the remaining figure of drawing, which is capable of being attached 'to the work bench more readily and quickly. In this device, the movable jaw is mounted upon a horizontally movable rod 35, which is adapted torecip'rocate within a lateral opening provided in the supporting lug.

lateral projection'36 is formed upon the said lug-and a clamping lever 37 is pivotally mounted thereon with its cam face 38 adapted for engagement with the outer end of the rod 35, whereby the movable jaw may be thrust inwardly into inoperative position by a single operation of the lever, and may 7 be as readily released.
It is to be understood that the component parts of the attachment may be constructed of metal, wood, or any other suitable material, andthat minor changes in the mechanical details thereof such as fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to in practice whenever necessary.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a work-bench, of a supporting device therefor comprising anattaching member adapted to be secured to the bench, an arm mounted in the said member, a head provided upon one end of said arm, a vertically adjustable standard mounted within the said head, a supporting head provided upon the upper end of the standard, the said standard being provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced notches, a releasable pawl mounted within th first-named head for engagement with the said notches to support the standard in adjusted position, and yieldable means for maintaining the pawl normally in operative position, the first head having a supporting surface upon which the engaging end of the pawl is adapted to bear when in operative position.
2. The combination with a Work-bench, of a supporting device comprising an attaching member adapted to be secured to the bench, an arm mounted in the said member, a head provided upon one end of the arm, a vertically adjustable standard mounted within the said head, and a supporting head detachably mounted upon the upper end of the standard, the said supportin head including an inclined shelf and a guard &
flange disposed at an acute angle to the shelf.
3. The combination with a work-bench, of a supporting device comprising an attaching member adapted to be secured to the bench, an arm mounted in the said member, a head provided upon one end of the arm, a vertically adjustable standard mounted within the said head, and a supporting head detachably mounted upon the upper end of the standard, the said supporting head including an inclined shelf and a guard flange disposed at an acute angle to the shelf, the adjacent faces of the shelf and guard flange being convex.
