Description

W. H. SAOKMAN. DETAGHABLE AND PORTABLE LIGHT HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 11,1908.
958,440. Patented May 17,1910.
amcwtoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. SACKMAN, OF COCHRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 PENNSYL- VANIA SPECIALTY MANUFACTURING 00., OF COGHRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETACHABLE AND PORTABLE LIGHT-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SACK- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cochranton, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable and Portable Light-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to portable lamps and particularly to portable lamp supports.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be removably secured upon the base or table of lathes, planing machines or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted in all positions, whereby the bulb may be conveniently moved so as to obtain light at different points.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a simple, cheap and efiicient device with convenient means for attaching a lamp supporting mechanism to a suitable support.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the lamp holder with portions in section to illustrate its application; Fig. 2is an elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the base plate; Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 2, showing how the lamp holder is locked to the base plate; Fig. 6 is a similar section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, showing the locking rod in released position.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 represents a base or support which, in this instance, is indicated as the raised guide of a lathe having a central longitudinal slot 2, formed therein. The base of the lamp support is shown at 3 and is provided with a depending longitudinal rib 4, adapted to enter the slot 2 in the support and to Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lay 17, 191() Application filed June 11, 1908.
Serial No. 438,003.
provide a guide for the sliding of the base upon the support. This rib or flange 4, is cut away to form a screw receiving slot 5, with one wall thereof inclined as shown at 6, to form a surface, against which the cam surface 7 of a screw bolt 8, is adapted to bear. This screw bolt passes up through the slot, where it is provided with a tension nut 9, adapted to rest upon the upper face of the base and to draw the inclined surface 7 of the bolt against the inclined surface 6 of the base, whereby its outer vertical edge 10, will engage the adjacent wall of the slot 2, and clamp the base to the support. When the nut 9 is operated so as to disengage the cam face 7 of the screw 8 from the cam face 6 of the base, the screw is loose within the slot and in order to prevent the same from becoming disengaged therefrom, I provide a screw 11 having a flat side 12 which, when properly turned, is flush with the side walls of the slot 5 and will permit the removal of the flat screw 8. However, if it is desired to hold the screw in position within the slot, the screw 11 is turned so that its round head will overhang the wall of the slot and pre vent the removal of the screw 8.
Extending vertically through the base and rib at, is a circular hole 13, in which is secured a supporting standard 14, by means of a locking key 15, which is seated within a bored-out portion 16, in the standard, so that the key will project slightly beyond the periphery of the standard. In Figs. 5 and 6, it will be seen that the key 15 is flattened on one side, or in other words, is given the arc of a circle greater than its periphery, so as to conform when in normal position, with the periphery of the standard 14. When the key is turned in the standard, however, the flat side is moved inwardly and the circular portion thereof projects beyond the pe riphery of the standard and engages the walls of the hole 13 in the base and holds the standard in locked position.
The upper portion of the standard is provided with adjustable bracket arms 17 which are arranged to support the lamp 18, in a plurality of adjusted positions, whereby the light may be conveniently turned to all points within the radius of the length of the arms.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. In a lamp supporting device, the combination with a base or support, of a notched and apertured body, said notch having an inclined Wall, a Wedge plug seated in said notch, means to operate said plug to clamp the body on the support, a standard seated in said aperture, and means to hold the standard in adjusted position on the body.
2. In a lamp supporting device, the combination with a base or support, of a notched and apertured body, said notch having an inclined Wall, a Wedge plug seated in said notch, means to operate said plug to clamp the body on the support, a standard seated in said aperture and comprising a plurality of pivoted arms, and a cam bolt carried by the standard for holding the same in adjusted position in the aperture of the body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM H. SACKMAN.
