Sept. l5. 1925.
F. W. WHITE ADJUSTABLE A 'SUPPORTING DEvIcE Filed lay 16. 1924 afronta* 5 Patented Sept. l5, 1925 PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. WHITE, OF EAST PALESTINE, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Application filed May 16,
To all lwhom it may concer/ri.'
Be it known that I, FRANK lV. VHITE, a citizen oi the United States, residing at East Palestine, in the county ot Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined devices, and4 more particularly to an adjustable lamp,A pipe hanger and adjustable wiring device. The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be used as a. pipe hanger and at the same time have attached thereto an adjustable lamp, or which may be used as a device for securing an adjustable lamp to an object.
Still another object resides inthe provision of an arcuate member slotted longitudi-` nally, said member being adapted in one position to support a pipe and in its inverted position to provide a clamp .for the adjustable support of an electric socket or wiring connection, as may be desired.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple in construction, strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eiiicient in operation.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
Inthe accompanying drawing forming a part of this application,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation with parts in section showing my improved device applied to use and supporting a pipe;
Figure 2 is a vertlcal section through my improved device applied to use strictly as an "adjustable lamp support;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the support removed;
Figure 4 is a vertical section as seen on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fi re 5 is an enlarged section as seen on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 6 is a section showing'an adjustable wiring connection used in association with this device.
Referring to the drawing, in which sim- 1924. Serial N0. 713,834.
ilar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates mv improved supporting -nienibeiwhich, as illustrated in Fig. 1, is
designed to represent a pipe hanger. This support is channel-shaped in cross section, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5,`and the same is generally arcuately designed, having formed at its one end a base plate or the like 2, in which there is provided a plurality ot apertures 3 whereby the same may be secured to a support. In Fig. 1 I have illustrated the support, which is designated by the numeral 4, and screws or the like may be inserted through the openings 3 to secure the member 1 on the support 4.
The bottom wall of the channel-shaped arcuate hanger f or support 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 5 and extending through said slot is the shank of a bolt 6, the head of the latter being disposed within the channel-shaped member 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. A plate 7 is provided with an opening through which the shank of the bolt 6 also extends and a wing nut 8 is engaged with the outer threaded end of said bolt 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The plate 7 is also provided with a threaded opening 9 with which is engaged the threadedportion 10 ot an electric light socket 11.
As shown in Fig. 1, the device is adapted to support a pipe 12, at the same time also adjustably support the light socket 11. It frequently occurs that in places where pipes are supported it is desired'to provide an electric light, and there being no socket it cannot be accomplished. With my improved device it is possi le to suspend a socket from the pi e hanger and overcome the diiiiculty.
In ig. 6 I have shown also adapted for use in connection with this pipe hanger or support 1 a wiring connection. This wiring connection comprises a pair of complementary sections 13 and 14 which are preferably formed of porcelain and are provided with grooves having teeth therein which are designed to hold the wires 15 in place. The bolt 16 extends centrally through the air of complementary sections and is provided with a head 17 ada. ted to tit beby the sections may be drawn together for holding the Wires 15 in place. It is quite obvious how this wiring connection may be applied to the hanger or support 1.
It is also quite possible to use my device separate and distinct from any connection with a pipe. In other words,this member 1 may be readily used as an adjustable support for the lamp or for the wiring connection as shown in Fig. 2. In this connection the support l is disposed in inverted position and a bolt 19 is disposed through a threaded opening 20 in the base plate or the like 2 thereof. A nut 21 is engaged with the threaded portion of the bolt 19 on the inner face of the plate 2, the one face of which rests flat against a plate or projection 22 secured to said plate 2. It will thus be seen that the member 1 may be hooked or engaged .with a post, Wall or other support 23 and the bolt 19 turned home against said support to secure the same adjustably thereon. Then the socket or wiring connection may be readily adjusted in the slot 5, as a pears obvious.
It will be noted that I have described and shown the supporting member 1 as channelshaped in cross-section. Being so constructed, the side walls of this member 1 will enable a pipe to be supported thereon without interfering With the elements supporting and securing the light socket thereto, and when applied in the manner as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the boltl securing the socket to the supporting member will in no way interfere with the member to which the device is applied. Elements received between the side walls and it will be seen that I have provideda Simple, efficient and inexpensive means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
While I have described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form,
proportion, and in the minor details of' construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles ofthe invention.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim is A device of the class described comprising a channel-shaped member designed arcuate in side elevation and having its bottom wall i slotted longitudinally for substantially the full length thereof, means engaged with the slot in the base portion to adjustably support a member thereon, an extension on the one end' of. said channel-shaped member having a threaded opening therein, said opening being in ali ment with the opposite end of said channe -shaped member, and a set screw operating in said threaded opening adapted to cooperate withthe opposite end of said channel-shaped member to secure the latter to an object, as and for the purposes described.v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANK W. WHITE.
