Specification of Letters Patent.

To LZ2 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCCUNE, a citilzen of the United States, and a resident of Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Miter-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to miter boxes, and is designed particularly to provide means adapted to enable a saw to be held in a vertically inclined plane while cutting diagonally across an object, so as to cut angles in two directions at the same time.
Other objects relating to the specific construction and special arrangement of the several parts of my invention will be understood by the following description and accompanying drawings7 in which drawings Figure 1 is a top plan of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan thereof; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the lower portion of the construction shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a transverse section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 8 is a front elevation of a rotating guide plate.
As illustrated in the drawings, a base plate 1 is mountedupon supports2 of any desired construction, and provided with a sector portion 3 forming diagonal guide lines 4 extending across the face of the bed plate. The ends of the bed plate are provided with arc slots 5 adapted to receive the lower end of clamping posts 6 which are mounted upon swinging arms 7 secured to the bottom ofthe bed plate by means of pivot pins 8. nuts 9 are connected with the clamping posts 6 by means of a threaded engagement, and are adapted to clamp the posts 6 when adjusted at any point on the bed plate 1. Back plates 10 are secured to the ends of the bed plate at one side thereof, and are provided with arc recesses adapted to receive the curved edge of a segment 11 which serves as an adjustable guide plate, and is rotatably mounted in any suitable manner upon the bed plate and provided with a transverse slot 11a adapted to receive the blade of a saw. A casing 12 having a cylindrical bore is horizontally pivoted to the bed plate 1 by means of a pivot pin 12a, and supports an outer sleeve 13 and an inner sleeve 14, which are rotatably mounted in said casing andhave a Thumb telescopic engagement with the casing and with each other. The sleeves 1.3 and 14 are provided with saw posts 15 and 16 having longitudinal slots 15l and V16a respectively, and caps 17 secured to the end of the posts. Sleeves 18 are mounted to slide on the saw posts and provided with slots 13a adapted to receive the blade of a saw. Spring catches 19 are attached tocaps on the outer end of the posts adapted to engage a recess or notch 18b formed on the upper end of the sleeves 18 to hold a saw sustained in position when desired. A latch 20 is attached to the casing 12 and held normally in "engagement with notches of a segment' 1a on the bed plate 1 by means of a spring 21.
The latch is provided with a lip or thumb piece 2()a by means of which the latch may be released from engagement with the segment. The sleeves 13 and 14 are held against vrotary or torsional movement relatively to each other by means of a pivot pin 22a, which extends through oppositely disposed slots 14EIL formed in the inner sleeve and is fastened at its ends to the outer sleeve 13. The sleeves 13 and 14 are locked longitudinally relative to each other by means of a lever 22, which is mounted at one end upon the pivot pin 22a, and is made extensible in length by a rod 24 which has a sliding longitudinal engagement with the lever 22, and is provided on its outer end with a thumb piece 24 which extends into the interior of the saw post 16. The lever 22 is also provided with a pin 23 which is adapted to engage with an aperture formed in the-` outer sleeve 13. This pin is also adapted to engage apertures 14b formed in a longitudinal line in the inner casing 14 and apertures 12b extending in lines transversely of the casing 12, as indicated in Fig. 2. By means of such construction the sleeves 13 and 14 may be extended outward from the casing 12 so that the saw posts mounted thereon may be free from the work on the base plate. `When the sleeves are so extended the pin 23 of the level' 22 engages one of the inner apertures 14b of the sleeve 14, the aperture formed in the outer sleeve 13, and one of the apertures 12D of the outer casing, thereby locking the sleeve againstlongitudinal movement rela tively to each other or to the casing 12. The sleeves 13 and 14 are adapted to be rotated in the casing 12 so as to incline the saw posts vertically and enable them to hold a lio saw supported thereon in a vertically inclined plane by releasing the pin 23 from engagement with the apertures 12b of the casing and the apertures-12b are arranged in a transverse line in order to lock the sleeves in position when the saw posts are inclined. Set screws 25 are mounted in the opposite sides of the casing 12 and engage the slots 14C and 14d of the inner sleeve 14, as shown in Fig. 7, thereby acting as stops to aid the pin 23 in holding the sleeve 14 against rotary motion when engaging the slots 14C, and to permit a limited rotary motion of said inner casing when the set screws engage the transverse slots 14 d. As the sleeves 13 and 14 are drawn outward from the casing 12, and the set screws 25 come in line with the transverse slots 14d, the sleeves may be rotated and the saw posts tilted in the manner hereinbefore described. 1n order to permit this rotary or torsional movement of the sleeves relatively to the set screws 25, and casing the free end of the outer sleeve 13 is cut away to form oppositely disposed apertures 13a, as shown in Fig. 7, which permit the sleeve 13 to be rotated to a limited extent on the casing, as the transverse slots 14d enable the inner sleeve 14 to be rotated. Guide plates 27' are provided with longitudinal slots engaging the set screws 28 having a threaded engagement with the outer end of the casing 12, and adapted to be adjusted longitudinally on the outer ends of said casing so as to bear at their upper ends against the sleeves 1S of the saw posts, and thereby limit the downward movement of said' sleeves and the saw supported thereto, to regulate the depth of cut produced by the saw relatively to the surface of the bed plate.
When the device is in use, the free end of the casing 12 is released from engagement with the bed plate by pressing inward on the lip 20L of the latch 20 so as to release said latch from engagement with the notched segment 1a formed on the bottom of the bed plate. The casing 12 carrying the sleeves -13 and 14 may then be brought into the desired position and secured in such position by means of a thumb screw 26 secured to the casing, and adapted to bear against any suitable portion of the bed plateframe. When it is desired to make a vertically inclined cut as well as a diagonal transverse cut in an object, the pin 23 is released from engagement with the aperture 14ID of the inner sleeve, the aperture of the outer sleeve 13 and the aperture 12b of the casing by pressing upward on the thumb piece 24a attached to the outer end of the lever 22. The sleeves 13 and 14 are then free to be rotated in the casing 12 and the saw inclined as desired. When so inclined the sleeves are lockedagainst rotary or torsional movement by the pin 23 engaging one of the transverse apertures 12b of the casing. 1f it is desired to extend the saw post outward from the bed plate, the pin 23 is released from engagement withthe apertures of the sleeves, and the sleeves then drawn outward from the bed plate and locked in such extended position by placing' the pin 23 in engagement with one o the apertures 14b nearer the middle of the sleeve 14, and to incline the saw posts when the sleeves are so extended the pin 23 is released from engagement with the apertures of the sleeves and the casing, the posts adjusted vertically as desired, and the pin 23 again placed inl engagement with one of the apertures 14b of the inner sleeve, the aperture of the outer sleeve .registering therewith and one of the apertures 12b of the casing.
In the construction herein shown and described, l have embodied my invention in its preferred form. I do not desire to be limited to such construction, however, as other means having similar capabilities may be substituted without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a bed plate, of a casing pivoted horizontally thereon, sleeves provided with saw posts and rotatably mounted in said casing and movable longitudinally thereof, a lever pivoted to one ofr said sleeves, and providedwith a pin adapted to have a locking engagement with both of said sleeves.
2. The combination with a bed plate, of a casing pivoted horizontally thereon, sleeves provided with saw posts rotatably mounted in said casing and movable longitudinally thereof, a lever pivoted to one of said sleeves and provided with a pinadapted to engage both of said sleeves, and means adapted to hold said sleeves against rotary motion relatively to each other independently of said lever.
3. The combination with a bed plate, of a casing pivoted horizontally thereon, sleeves rotatably mounted in said casing, movable longitudinally thereof and provided with saw posts, a lever extensible in length pivoted to one of said sleeves, and adapted to engage apertures formed in both of said sleeves.
4. The combination with a bed plate, of a casing pivoted horizontally thereon, inner and outer telescoping sleeves rotatably mounted in said casing and adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof, a pin attached at its ends to the outer casing and engaging a longitudinal slot formed in the inner casing, and a lever eXtensible in length provided with a pin adapted to engage registeringapertures formed 1n both of said sleeves.
5. The combination with a bed plate, of a casing pivoted horizontally thereon and provided with a series of transverse apertures, inner and outer telescoping sleeves rotatably mounted in said casing and movable longihaving oppositely disposed longitudinal slots tudinally thereof, saw posts mounted on said sleeves, a lever pivoted to one of said sleeves and provided with a pin adapted to engage registering apertures formed in both of said sleeves, and the apertures ofsaid casing.
6. The combination With a bed plate, of a casing pivoted horizontally thereon, inner and outer sleeves provided with saw posts mounted in said casing` and movable longitudinally thereof, the outer sleeve being cut away laterally at its free end, the inner sleeve and transverse slots communicating therewith, set screws secured to said Casing engagl ing the slots of the inner sleeve and the cutaway portion of the outer sleeve, and a lever pivotally connected with the outer casing and provided with a pin adapted to engage registering apertures formed in said sleeves and casing.
