RANDOLPH A. WELLS; 0F KENOSI-IA, WISCONSIN.
SQUARE.
Application filed July 13, 1918.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be. it .known thatI, RANDOLPH A. VVELLs,
a citizen 'of the.United: States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of- Kenosha and State of rWVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the'following isa specificatlon.
Th1s invention. relates to geometrical 1nstruments, particularly to those of the guidesurfaceaon.thebody wherebythe posi tion of the movable blade in relation to the body of the device-willhave a fixed relation so that it will always extend at a definite angleinrespeet to the body and to the holding the movable blade in its adjusted fixed blade.
An important object is the provision of a square of this character in which the adjustment may be effected without the employment of screws or other securing devices.
A further object is the provision of a square of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement of the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the square applied to a straight edge and used as a trisquare j Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the square applied to a straight edge and adjusted into position for use as a miter square Fig. 3 is an edge view Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line l1 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the 1nov able blade.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates the body or handle member of the square which has one end cut on an incline of 45 to its length as shown at 11, this end being bifurcated to provide a slot for the reception of the fixed Specification of Letters Patent.

blade. 12 which is rigidly, secured to the handle member in any; desired manner.
The movable blade is designated by the numeral 13 and comprises a flat strip of material of a, width equal to the thickness-of the handle 10 and preferably of a length to extend from the squareend of the handle 10 to the outer edge of the fixed blade 12. This movable blade 13 is disposed against the inner side of the handle or body 10 and is provided with aslot l l for the accommodation of thefixed blade.12. A; semici-rcular guide member 15 is secured to the blade 13in any desired manner and is disposedwithin a corresponding recess 16 in the. handle or body 10. Adjacent the juncture of the inner edgeof-the fixed blade 12 withthe inner edge of thehandle or body. 10 is provided a pivot pin-17 which passesthrough the handle;10 and through the guide member-15 whereby the blade 13will bepivotally connected in respect to the handle member 10; IA. set; screw. 18 isiprovided for positions. This set screw passes through one side of the handle 10 and engages the semi-circular guide plate 15.
When the device is to be used as a trisquare, the movable blade 13 is disposed against the inner face of the body or handle 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In view of the fact that the fixed blade 12 is of less thickness than the handle or body 10 and also of less thickness than the width of the movable blade 13, it will be seen that the inner face of the movable blade 13 will serve as an abutment shoulder so thatv posed fiat against the edge of a straight surface. In view of the fact that the inclined shoulders 11 are cut at an angle of 45 to the length of the body it will necessarily follow that the movable blade 13 will also be disposed at the same angle and will enable the outer edge of the fixed blade 12 tobe used as a guide for marking a proper line upon the material to be mltered. From an inspection of the drawing it will be readily apparent that the square may be shifted from one positionto the other without removing it from contact with a straight edge to which it happens to be applied.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be seen that I have thus provided an extremely simple square which is so constructed that it may be used as a tri-square or readily shifted into position for use as a miter-square without necessarily removing it from engagement with an edge in which it is in contact and without the use of adjusting screws or other devices.
'While I 'have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
will of course be understood that I reserve inclined to the length of the handle and be- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ing rovided with a recess, and a blade pivotal y connected With said handle adjacent the uncture of its inner edge with the inner edge of said fixed blade, a semi-circular guide member secured upon said pivoted blade and disposed within the recess in said handle, movement of said pivoted blade in one direction being limited by engagement thereof with the inner edge of said handle and movement of the pivoted blade in the other direction being limited by engagement thereof with said shoulders.
2. A square of the character described comprising a handle, slotted at one end, a right angularly extending fixed blade secured within said slot, said handle having its end adjacent said blade cut away to provide inclined shoulders, a movable blade disposed at the inner edge of said handle and provided With a longitudinal slot for the accommodation of said fixed blade, a semi-circular guide member secured upon said movable blade and disposed Within a corresponding recess in said handle and a pivot pin passing through said handle and said guide adjacent the juncture of the inner edges of said handle and said fixed blade.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
