This invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a wrench embodying stationary and movable jaws. in which the various elements associated therewith for operation, are detachably connected together to form a compact and eflicient tool.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the above character, which is provided with a plurality of rigid and movable jaws, to grip both plane and curved surfaces.
A. further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the above described character having embodied therein a wire cutting device, a nail extracting element; and a hammer adapting the tool for a combination of'purposes, as a utility device.
Other objects of the invention will appear during the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the same:

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A designates the stationary frame, having a movable frame B associated therewith, and an advancing sleeve or handle C being employed for the purpose of moving the movable frame longitudinally with respect to the stationary frame.
The stationary frame A is provided with a jaw 10 projecting laterally therefrom, which jaw is substantially circular in cross section, however, being provided with the flat face 11 as an article engaging surface. The jaw 10 is uniform in cross section throughout, and is provided with a hammer surface 12 upon the end thereof. The stationary frame A is provided with a second jaw 13, projecting laterally from the frame, and in a direction opposite to that of the jaw 10. The jaw 13, is of different formation than jaw 10, having a concave article engaging surface 14:, which is preferably provided with the serrations 15 in the form of teeth. The jaw 13 gradually diminishes toward its free end to provide the nail extracting crevice 16 thereon. The stationary frame A is provided upon each side of the l0ngitudinal axis of the jaws 10 and 13 with a de pending guide leg 17, integral with the structure of the jaws, to provide the open or recessed portion 18 intermediate the guide legs 17. The guide legs 17 are of the same length, one of them being provided with a screw threaded opening 19 near its free end, while the other guide leg is provided with the counter-sunk opening 20 therein, the.
openings 19 and 20 having a common axis. Intermediate the free ends of the legs 17 and their connection with the jaw structure of the frame A, they are provided upon the exterior surface with the shoulders 21, the same being formed by a reduction in the cross section of the metal from that point to the free end of each of the guide legs 17.
The movable frame B comprises a jaw 25 adapted to co-act with the jaw 10 of the stationary frame A and which is provided with the fiat article engaging surface 26, adapted to abut the surface 11 of the jaw 10, when the movable jaw and stationary jaw are in closed relation. It is preferred that the jaw 25 terminates short of the end 12 of the jaw 10 to allow freedom of movement for the jaw 10 when using the same as a hammer. The movable frame is likewise provided with a jaw 27 opposite to the jaw 25 and in the same longitudinal axls therewith, which is provided to co-act with the jaw 13 of the stationary frame A. The

The screw threaded shank 34 is thus distinctly divided into two screw threaded sections or portions 37 and 38.
Themovable jaw B is slidably connected to the stationary jaw A by having the guide legs 17 of the stationary jaw A disposed within the grooves 36 of the movable jaw 13, thus sliding mounting the movable jaw without chance of rotation of one with respect to the other, Inorder to prevent disconnection of the movable .jaw B from the stationary jaw A, a pivoted member 40 is provided, having the enlarged head 41 thereon, which is sub stantially thesame width as the recess 18 between the guide legs 17; and a depending shank 42, having the screw threads 43 upon the lower end thereof. The pivoted member 40 is provided with an opening in the head 41 adapted for receiving a screw 45, which screw is adapted to be extended in the openings 19 and 20 of the legs 17 for the purpose of pivoting the member 40 to the lower ends of the legs 17, to prevent disconnection of the movable frame B from the frame A.
The advancing sleeve G is internally screw threaded for engaging with the screw threaded portions 37 and 38 of the shank 34, the exterior surface 46 being preferably circular, and having the knurled portions 47 thereon as a better gripping means for operation of the device. The sleeve 1 gradually diminishes toward its end and is provided with an aperture 49 therein adapted to receive the shank 42 'of the member 40 therethrough, in such manner that the screw larly sleeve upon the movable frame A.

The screw threaded portion of the shank 34 is provided with left handed screw threads and upon assemblage of the advancing sleeve 0 to engage the screw threaded portions 37 and 38 of the shank 34, and upon rotation of the movable advancing sleeve C to the right,
the internal screw threads of the advancing and 27 of the movable jaw B can be ad- 7 vanced into operative engagement with the jaws 10 and 13 of the stationary frame A.
In order to allow contact of the jaws 25 and 10, the movable frame B is provided with the recess 56, adapted to receive a portion 57 of the frame A adjacent the connection of the guide legs 17 with the stationary frame. In order to allow considerable expansion of the jaws, the shank 34 is recessed upwardly from the free end thereof as shown-at 58,

A wire cutting device is embodied in the structure, namely, by the upwardly extending projection 60 provided upon the jaw 25, which extends to one side of the longitudinal. center of the jaw 25 and is provided with the cuttingedge 61. The jaw 10 is provided with a coacting and depending projection 62 extending upon the opposite side of the center line of the jaw, from that of the projection 60 and provided with the cutting edge 63 adapted to co-act with the cutting edge 61 of the projection 60 to'cut a wire or similar article, when the same is inserted to be engaged by the cutting edges, and upon operation of the deviceto advance the jaws 10 and 23 into proximity with each other. A recess 64 is provided in the jaw 10 which is adapted to receive the projection 60 and a similar recess is provided in the jaw 25 adapted to receive the projection 62 upon the aw 10; the recesses Gel and 65 being provided in order that the surfaces 11 and 26 of the jaws 10 and 25 respectively, may be brought into abutting relation.
The hammer surface 12 of the jaw 10 could be used as an anvil when horizontally disposed, upon engagement of the jaws 27 and 13, with some object.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In a wrench, the combination of a statationary frame including a jaw and depending shank, a movable frame including a jaw, and an externally screw threaded shank, said movable frame-shank having a recess therein for reciprocation over the shank of said stationary frame, an internally screw threaded rotative sleeve engaging the shank of said stationary frame, to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said last mentioned shank and sleeve, the screw threads of said rot-ative sleeve being in engagement with the screw threads on the shank of said movable frame for advancing said movable jaw upon rotation of said sleeve.
2. In a wrench, the combination of a stationary frame including a wrench jaw, and a pair of spaced guide legs, a movable frame including a wrench jaw, and a screw threaded shank for engagement intermediate the guide legs; detachable means for holding the free ends of said spaced legs together, and preventing disconnection of the movable frame from the stationary frame, and an advancing sleeve for engagement with the screw threaded shank of the movable frame to advance the movable frame longitudinally with respect to the stationary frame.
3. In a wrench, the combination. of a stationary frame including a wrench jaw and a pair of spaced guide legs; a movable frame, including a wrench jaw, and a screw threaded shank for engagement intermediate the guide legs; detachable means for preventing disconnection of the movable frame from the stationary frame; and an advancing sleeve for engagement with the screw threaded shank of the movable frame to advance the movable frame longitudinally with respect to the stationary frame.
4. In a wrench, the combination of a stationary frame including a jaw, and spaced depending legs; a movable frame including a jaw, and a depending screw threaded shank,
said shank having recesses therein for reciprocation of said depending legs, a rota tive screw threaded sleeve in operating engagement with the screw threaded shank, and means engaging the rotative sleeve and depending legs for permitting longitudinally feeding of the movable frame with respect to the stationary frame, and preventing relative longitudinal movement of said sleeve upon said stationary frame, upon rotation of said sleeve.
5. In a wrench, the combination, of a stationary frame including a wrench jaw, and depending spaced guide legs; a movable frame including a wrench jaw, and a screw threaded shank, said threaded shank having longitudinal recesses therein to receive the guide legs of the stationary frame; detachable means pivotally connected to the free ends of the guide legs to prevent disconnection of the stationary and movable frame; and an advancing sleeve adapted for rotative engagement with the stationary frame, and movable frame, to advance the movable frame longitudinally with respect to the stationary frame.
6. In a wrench, the combination, of a stationary frame, including a wrench jaw, and guide legs; a movable frame including a wrench jaw for co-acting with the wrench jaw of the stationary frame, and a screw threaded shank, said screw threaded shank having longitudinal recesses thereon for receiving the guide legs of the stationary frame, a detachable member pivoted to the guide legs and having a head integral therewith for receiving an end of the movable frame shank to prevent disconnection of the movable frame from the stationary frame, a sleeve being internally screw threaded for engagement with the screw threads of the movable frame, for advancing the movable frame with respect to the stationary frame; the lower end of the sleeve being open for projecting of the detachable pivoted memher, and means in engagement with the pivoted member for preventing disconnection of the advancing sleeve.
