Application filed'June 14, 1923. SerifldIofS AEAGE interchangeable aws.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a tool holder, whereby interchangeable jaws are attached to or detached from the holder, by a sidewise movement relative to the fixed jaw of the tool holder.
A further object of my invention is to simplify the construction of such a tool holder whereby the removable jaw is pivotally secured to the tool holder by a sideways movement of the pivot portion of the jaw into th holder, thereby eliminating pivot pins, bolts and the like, heretofore used for pivotally securing the jaw to the holder.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a tool holder with a plurality of interchangeable jaws, said jaws being constructed to take, and when the tool is in use, firmly and rigidly hold, all of the various small cutting tools or points, now in use.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a tool holder, said tool holder having details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tool holder, with the jaws in the open position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2, 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view looking at the jaw end of the tool holder.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4, 4: of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line 5, 5 of Figure 3.
In the drawing 6 indicates my improved tool holder which consists principally of a fixed aw member 7 and an interchangeable jaw member 8.
The fixed jaw member 7 has a fixed jaw 9 with a nurled biting face 10 and a V shaped groove 11,- preferably extending longitudinally of the jaw. This groove 11 may oxtend at an'angle or constructed in any pos t on desired.
At the inner end of the fixed jaw 9 is a semi-circular transverse pivot groove 12 merging into a semi-circular overhanging end 13,-Wl1lCl1 in turn merges into a rearwardly extending fiat upper face 14:, as
shown in Figure 1. The fixed jaw member 7 also has the elongated shank member 15.
Th interchangeable jaw member 8 has a jaw 16with V shaped grooves 11, 11 and at the inner end of the jaw 16 a reduced neck 17 on which is a nearly circular transverse pivot member 18, which has a transverse sliding fit in the'pivot groove 12 of the fixed jaw member 7. The neck 17 fits around the semi-circular overhanging end 18 on the fixed jaw member 7 and then merges into a straight rearwardly extending lever arm 19 which lays flat on the flat face 14 of the fixed jaw member 7, when the jaws are open, as shown in Figure 1. In the rear end of the lever arm 19 is a vertical screwthreaded hole 20 in which is a bolt 21 the inner end of which bears on the flat face 14 of the fixed jaw member 7.
When in use the interchangeable jaw member required is placed with a sidewise movement into its working position into the tool holder, as shown in Figurev 1 and in broken and full lines in Figure 3, which shows in broken lines the interchangeable jaw partly inserted by a sidewise movement, into the tool holder. The shank of a cut ting tool or point may now be inserted between the jaws 9 and 16 and rigidly secured between the jaws, by tightening the bolt 21, which forces the jaw 16 towards the jaw 9.
By the use of my improved construction in tool holders interchangeable jaws are easily and quickly inserted or removed from the holder, thereby saving in time and the tool holder being extremely simple in construction, a material saving in the cost of manufacturing is obtained.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new 2- 1. A tool holder having a fixed lower jaw and a movable upper jaw pivotally secured to the holder and extending over the lower jaw, said tool holder having a construction whereby the pivoted upper aw is pivotally secured in place in the holder, by a sidewise movement of the pivoted upper jaw, for the purpose as described:
2. In a tool holder, a fixed jaw member having a fixed jaw and a semicircular' transverse pivot groove, a removable jaw memberhaving a transverse sliding pivot member in the semi-circular transverse pivot groove in the fixed jaw member, for the purpose as described.
3. In a tool holder, a fixed lower jaw member having a shank, and a semi-circular transverse pivot groove adjacent the fixed lower jaw, a removable upper member extending over the lower jaw and having a transverse sliding pivot member in the semi-circular transverse pivot groove in the fixed lower jaw member, for the purpose as described. 7
4. A tool holder comprising a fixed lower jaw member and. a removable upper jaw member lying over the lower jaw, said .tool holder having asliding pivot construction, whereby the removable upper jaw may be removed from the holder by a transverse sliding movement of the removable upper jaw, for the purpose as described.
5. A toolfholder comprising a fixed lower "aw member and a removable upper member lying over the lower jaw member, said tool holder having a transverse sliding pivot construction, whereby the removable upper j aw is pivotally secured to-the holder and the removable upper jaw may be removed from the holder by a transverse sli ling movement of the removable upper jaw and means for operating the removable upper jaw to close the jaws, for the purpose as described.
6. A tool holder comprising a fixed jaw member having; a shank, a fixed aw, a transverse semi-circular pivot groove and an end overhanging the pivot groove,- and a removable jaw member having aa transverse nearly circular. pivot member in the semi-circular pivot groove, a lever arm and a bolt screw-threaded through the lever farm and bearing on the fixed jaw member, for the purpose-as d5." scribed. r
In testimony whereof, Ifhave signed mv name to this specification. V
