PLIER WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1920.

UNITED STATES ARTHUR S. E. ME'ICALF, OF DRISCOLL, NORTH DAKOTA.
PLIERWRENGH.
Application filed May 28, 1920.
'1 all whom it may concern:
it known that I, ARTHUR S. E. MET- canr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Driscoll, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plier- Wrenches, or" which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in plier wrenches and is primarily an improvement on the form of plier wrench embodied in my prior Patent No. 1,207,061, dated December 5, 1916, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means for cutting wire or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide wrench of this character embodying a 3 air of relatively movable jaws, together with means for moving or shifting said jaws one with respect to the other so that the same may be effectively engaged with the work.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved plier wrench whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with a portion broken away of a plier wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is'an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the slidable jaw unapplied; and
Fig. 6 is a view in end elevation of the structure illustrated in Fig. 5.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented him. 15, 1921.
Serial No. 384,251.
ings, 1 denotes a handle having one extremsecured adjacent one end of a box portron B, and which box portion comprises side plates 2 and 3 with the outer edges of said plates straight and in parallelism. Extending forwardly from the upper edges of the side plates 2 and 3 at the end portion thereof remote from the handle 1 is an outstanding jaw 4, the lower or connected end portion of which. bridging the space between the plates 2 and 3. The longitudinal axis of the aw 4, together with the inner working face 4; is disposed on an angle with respeict to the parallel edges of the plates 2 an 3.
The side plate 2 is removable and is held in applied position through the medium of the screws 1" and 4, together with the szrew 20, to be hereinafter referred to. 2 also overlies the side face of the jaw 4 with the inner face or edge of said jaw slightly spaced outwardly with respect to the straight edges of the applied plates 2 and 3. T he inner edge oi the portion of the plate overlying the jaw 4. and inwardly of the jaw at is provided with a recess 5 defined by a knife edge 6.
The side plate 3 is provided adjacent its outer straight edge with an inwardly disposed rib 8 in parallelism with said straight edge and which engages within a groove or,
channel 9 formed in a side face of the flattened shank or wing 10 extending between the plates 2 and 3 and carried by the jaw 11. The jaw 11 is free to slide upon the outer straight edges of the plates 2 and 3 and the working face 11 of said jaw 11 and the major or longitudinal axis of said jaw are in parallelism with the working face 43 of the jaw 1 and the longitudinal or major axis of said jaw.
The wing or shank 10 extends inwardly of the working face of the jaw 11 and the inner marginal portion of said wing or shank, at a point inwardly of the working face of the jaw 11, is provided with a recess 12 in which engages a tooth 1 1 carried by an end portion of a handle 15 and which end portion is seated between the plates 2 and 3.
The end portion of the handle 15 between the plates 2 and 3 is provided with a rocker 16 provided with the teeth 17 which engage the teeth 18 of the straight rack 19. The rack member 19 is positioned between the plates 2 and 3 and is held against The plate displacement by the screw 20. The outer teeth 18 of the rack are longer thanthe remaining teeth 18, serving as a stop to limit the movement of the handle 15 in one direction. The outer edge of the extended portion of the wing or shank 10 is disposed on a downward and outward incline with .respect to the working face 11" of the jaw 11. with the inner or high point a of said edge positioned a distance outwardly from the straight edges of the plates 2 and 3 slightly in'excess of the di ameter or" the notch or recess 5 and the low point 7) of said outer edge or the extended portion of the wing or shank 10 is substantially flush with the outer straight edges 01"" the plates 2 and 3. This inclined. outer marginal portion of the extension of the wing or shank 10 is formed into a knife edge 22 whereby the same coacts with the knife edge 6 in a manner whereby my improved implement may be effectively employed in the cutting of wire or the like.
WVhen itis desired to cut wire or the like,
such strand, when the jaws at and 11 are properly separated, is initially positioned within the notch 5 and upon exerting pressure upon the handles 1 and 15, the jaw 11 will be removed toward the jaw 4, re-
sulting in the knife edge 22 sliding under such wire or strand and severing the $211118 with ease and with but slight pressure on the handles l and 15.
The lower portion of the jaw l is also provided with suitable groove or recess to receive the cutting marginal portion of the wing or shank 10 as thejaw 11 ap preaches the jaw 4.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a plier wrench constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason. of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated. and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principlcs andspirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A wrench including a handle, a side plate carried thereby, a rigid jaw carried by said plate, a movable jaw slidably mounted on said plate and provided with a right angular extension projecting toward the handle and toward the base of the rigid jaw, said extension being provided with a recess, a rack carried by the side plate and provided with an extended tooth adjacent one end to provide a stop, and a movable handle provided with a rocker engaging the rack, said handle being provided with a tooth extending within. the recess of the slidable jaw.
2. A tool of the character described comprising a handle, a side plate carried by the handle, a rigid jaw supported by the plate, a slidable jaw movable on the plate and provided with a shank, said shank being disposed in parallel relation to one side face of the plate, said shank and side face oi the plate being provided with coacting guide means, one face of the shank being inclined from the working face of the slidable jaw to the adjacent edge of the plate, said inclined portion extending toward the work extremity of the awe and formed into a cutting member, the rigid jaw being provided with a recess in its "face adjacent its base, ant means for imparting relative movement to the jaws.
A. tool of the character described comprising plate including a handle, a stationary projecting "from one corner oi? the plate in angular relation to the end of the plate, said jaw having a recess at its face adjacent its base, a rib projecting from one race of said plate in spaced parallel. relation to said end, a movable jaw having an extension projecting from one end, a portion of said extension projecting beyond the working face of the jaw to provide a cutting ement, said extension having a groove adapted to'receive the rib of the plate, and means for operating said movable jaw, the ting edge of said cutting element being disposed at all times in angular relation to the end of said plate and movable longitudinally of the stationary jaw and recess.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
