warren erases iaeaaaa ADOLPH BANG-BET, '01 UNION HILL,- NE'VV V COMBINATION TOOL.
Application filed. November 12, 15321. Serial No. 514,539,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AnoLrH Barionn'r, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of UIllOIl H1ll,-county of 'Huds'on, and State of New Jersey, have in.
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tools, of. which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tools'an d has for its object togpro'vide a construction combining in itself severaltool elements, such as hammer, pipe wrench, monkey wrench, pipe cutter, etc., which ,are frequently used in certain work, such as automobile work or the like. 1 7
With this objectin view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will'be hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing similar ref erence characters denote corresponding parts, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device shown in use as monkey wrench; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a sectional side elevation of the tool (with the shank partly broken otf).shown in use as pipe wrench;Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 44: of Fig. 8; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the movable jawcarrying member; Fig. 6 is a side elevation similar to that of Fig. 3 showing the device in use as pipe cutter; and Fig. 7 isa perspective view f a removable jaw applied to the head of the hammer when the device is used as pipe cutter.
Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes the head of a hammer and 11 thestem thereof formed with an extension serving as handle. The inner face of the end10 of the head is adapted to serve as the stationary jaw of a wrench and may be serrated as at 10 The stem 11 is toothed longitudinally as at 11. and carries a slide 12 which is recessed at one of the sides, as at 12 to permit it to be slipped over the stem 11 and to be removably mounted thereon. The recess 12 is adapted to be closed by a removable plate 13 fitting therein and having a tongue 13' adapted to engage a slot or recess 12 in the bottom of the slide and serving to hold the plate in position. To the upper part of the slide is pivoted a finger 21 which when the plate is inserted into the recess 12 after the slide is mounted on thestem can be tilted d n ard y to lock the plate in position.
Pivot ed in theslide as at 14 is a pawl 14 having teeth le adapted to cooperate with the teeth 11 of the stem 11 and serving to lock the sleeveor slide in the position to which it may have been shifted on the stem.
This pawl be actuated by a plate spring 15 fixed at 15" to a cross piece 12 of the slide and bearing on the free end of the pawl 1 as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The pawl 14 isformed with a cross-pin 1.4 which 1s adapted to project outwardly through a slot'12 of the slide 12 to serve as a grasp. r
The top of he sleeve or slideis extended which is open in front and which serves as a socket. I In this socket is pivotally mount,
ed at 16, a j aw- 16 the forward or outer face of which Is serrated as at'16 and which 111 cooperation with the serrated face 10 of the 16 can be adjusted t extend with its outer face either parallel or at a slant to the opposite face of the stationary jaw. In the first case the wrench will act as an ordinary monkey wrench, as shown in Fig. 1, and in the second case as pipe wrench, as shown in Fig. 3.
Adapted to be detachably mounted over the jaw 10 of the hammer head is a member 19 shaped to conform with, but in width somewhat larger than said jaw. At one side said memberis provided with a groove 19 to permit said member to he slipped over said jaw. At the lower end of said grooved side perforations 19 are provided which are adapted to register with a perforation 10 in the hammer head and through which a pin 19 is adapted to be passed for securing said member on the hammer head. posite side of said member is adapted to project beyond the serrated face 10 of the jaw, and is provided transversely with an angular cut to form pipe-engaging jaws 20. The tiltable jaw 16 is provided centrally with a comparatively oblong slot 16 extending longitudinally of the slide 12 and from the front to the rear end of said jaw. This slot is adapted to serve as a socket for a comparatively thin blade 18 to be used as pipe,
upwardly and formed with a groove 12 The op V cutter. The blade when mounted in the '17. By setting the screw the cutter may be" fed outwardly as the cutting operation proceeds. I
Thus the tool described incorporates in itself a number of tool elements that maybe frequently required in certain kinds of work and the use of which is greatly facili tated. V
What I claim is t I r l. The herein described combination tool, comprising a stationary jaw formed with a stem, a sleeve slidably and adjustably borne on said stem, a tiltable jaw on said slide having a recess, a blade adapted to be removably borne in said recess, an adjustable common rear abutment for both said tiltable jaw and said blade, and a supplemental V-shaped jaw adaptedto fit over said stationary jaw and capable of being fixed thereto to cooperate with said blade as pipe cutter.
2. In a-tool of the character described, the combination with the stem, of a slide on said stem having a recess inits bottom and being open on one side, a plate serving to close the open side of said slide and formed with a tongue adapted to engage said recess, and
toothed stem, a member slidably mounted on said stem, a vertically tiltable spring-actuated pawl in said member to cooperate with the teeth of said stem, a vertically tiltable I jaw carried by said memberand having a recess, a blade removably fitted in said recess, an adjustable rear andcommon abutment for said tiltable jaw andblade, and a supplemental V-shaped jaw adapted to fit over said stationary jaw and to be fiXed' thereto 'to cooperate with said blade as pipe cutter. p r
Signed at New York, this 10 day of October, 1921.
