Description

C. W. DIXON.
, WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14. 1920.
Patented Sept. 27,1921.
UNITED vsT-.z r|es antennas w; Dixon, on TURKEY norm, oKLmioMA.
wnnnon,
To all whom it may 06mm.- v 1 Beit known that LCiiARLns W. DIXoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turkey Ford,in the county of Delaware and State of Oklahoma, have "invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel construction of wrench embodying a peculiar combination of structural elements wherein two movable jaws are relatively movable simultaneously toward or away from each other by manual actuation of a single operating element.
The invention is clearly disclosed in the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Briefly described:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the ing the jaws eferring now in detail to the drawing:
1 designates a handle, which may be of.
. any desired construction, carrying at one end thereof ahead 2, provided with a longitudinally extending marginal flange 3 terminating in an inturned lip 4. j
Detachably secured to said head 2 along the side thereof opposite the flange 3, as by means of screws 5, is a plate 6, having angled terminals 7, 7 bearing against the ends of the head 2. Said plate 6 is provided at one end with a similar inturnedlip 4' disposed in the plane of the lip 4. The plate 6 and the-flange 3 rise above the top of the head 2, forming therebetween a pocket 7 Specification of Letters 1 mm. Sept, 271 1921 1920. serial naassm;
for thereception of the movable. jaws .8 and-9; w
Each'of said jaws '8 and 9 is provided wlth longitudinally extending grooves 10, 10 in the sides thereof, fol the reception of the lips 4 and 4, whereby the jaws are retained in the pocket against accidental re.- moval or displacement, and whereby the jaws are guided in their movement. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the jaws bear against the top 2 of the head 2. Said jaw 8 is provided with a stem, or bar 11 at its base, and the other aw 9 is provided at its base with two parallel spaced bars 12, 12, between which the bar 11 projects, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the bars 12, 12 rest against the inner face of the flange 3 and the plate 6. Each of saidjaws 8 and 9 is provided with a'threaded opening 13, the threads being left and right hand threads respectively; that is to say, the threads of the opening 13 may be right hand threads and the threads of the other opening 18 in the other jaw may be left hand threads.
A screw 14 is swiveled between the ends thereof in the ends 7, 7 of the plate 6 and is provided with right and left hand threaded portions 15 and 16, engaging the right and left hand threads of the jaws 9 and 8. One exteriorly projecting end of the screw 14 may be provided with a knurled head 17, herein shown as a flat strip, which may be grasped by the thumb and forefinger of the operator in rotating the screw, so as to move the jaws 8 and 9 toward or away from each other, as is obvious.
In use the parts are assembled as shown in the drawings, the jaws 8 and 9 being'first positioned with the lip 4 engaging one of the side grooves 10 of each jaw, and with .the stem 11 projecting between the bars,
or legs, 12, 12 of the jaw 9. The plate 6 is then disposed in position against the side of the head 2 and opposite the flange 3 with the ends 7, 7 of said plate bearing against the ends of the head 2, and the plate secured in position by the screws 5, 5. In this position'of the plate 6 the lip 4 thereof is seated in the other opening 10 of each jaw 8 and 9, whereby the jaws are held against displacement, or accidental removal, and are guided in their movements. The screw 14 is secured againstendwise displacement in any suitable manner, so as to have a swiveled movement in the ends 7, 7 f the plate 6 11 ATE-NT OFFICE. a
To adjust the jaws relatively to each other, the screw is turned by manipulation of the head 17 so as to move the jaws simultaneously toward or away from each other as may be desired.
While I have described with great particularity a concrete embodiment of the underlying principles of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes, especially in detail, may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from' the spirit of the invention, or necessarily sacrificing any of its advantages, and all such changes are within the scope and purview of the invention.
What I claim to be new is:
A wrench comprising a head providing guide ways, opposed jaws mounted to slide in the'guide ways, one of said jaws being pro- ,vided with an ofi'setinserted centrally under CHARLES WrDIXON.
