Application filed December 16, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUroo F. SoHLoTE, a citizen of Germany, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved wrench which can be readily and quickly adjusted to the desired position and firmly locked in said position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a pair of jaws angularly related to the shank of the wrench and means for quickly adjusting one of the jaws in relation to the other jaw.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved wrench including a shank having a movable and a rigid jaw angularly related thereto and a hand grip slidably mounted upon said shank and operatively connected with the movable jaw in such manner as to permit the quick adjustment thereof, the hand grip being so arranged on the shank and connected with the movable jaw that the leverage of the hand grip is increased in direct proportion to the size of the nut engaged.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved wrench of the above character, which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manu facture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which:

Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the jaws of the wrench.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 345,242.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indlcates the improved wrench which includes the head having a threaded opening 3 formed in the lower surface thereof which is adapted to receive the threaded end 4 of the shank 5.
The head 2 is provided with a rigid jaw 6, which extends at an angle to the shank 5. The head carries the sliding jaw 7 which is adapted to cooperate with the rigid jaw 6 and the same has the working face thereof positioned parallel with the working face of the rigid jaw. It will be seen from the drawings that the whole wrench head 2 extends at an angle with the shank 5. The head 2 is provided with an inwardly extending slot 8 for the reception of the arm 9 formed on the movable jaw 7. The side faces of the arm 9 are provided with tongues 10 which are slidably received in grooves 11 formed in the side walls of the slot 8. This prevents transverse movement of the jaw in relation to the slot 8. The lower end of this slot is provided with a rounded cutout portion 12 which slidably receives the depending lug 13 formed on the arm 9 adjacent to the inner end thereof and the lower end of the lug is provided with a forked extension 14 which is provided with a threaded face 15 engaging the screw 16, which is fitted in the rounded portion 12 of the slot. One terminal of the rounded portion of the slot is inclosed by a wall which is provided with a bearing 16 for the reception of the reduced end 17 of the screw and it will be seen that when the screw is turned the movable jaw is moved toward or away from the rigid jaw according to the direction in which the screw is turned. One end of the circular portion of the slot is open and the walls of the surrounding portion adjacent the open end are threaded thus providing a threaded socket 18 holding a hearing screw 19 which receives the opposite reduced end of the feed screw. The bearing screw is held against accidental displacement by means of a lock screw 20. Keyed through the adjusting screw is a bevel pinion 21 which in turn meshes with a bevel gear 22, which is keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft 23 which extends longitudinally through the shank for rotary movement. The head 2 is slotted directly above the threaded opening 4 for the reception of the bevel gear 22. The lower terminal of the shank 5 carries a bearing screw 24 for the reception of the lower end of the shaft 23 so that the same can readily rotate The hand grip 26 carries a sliding catch.
30 which is adapted to be normally held in engagement with the teeth of the rack bar 31 formed on the shank by a leaf spring 32 and when it is desired to adjust the hand grip on the shank the lock or catch is forced inwardly against the tension of the leaf spring. A thumb piece 33 is formed on the catch so as to permit the same to be readily forced inwardly.
In operation of the improved device, when it is desired to adjust the jaws of the wrench, the catch i pushed inwardly and the hand grip slid up or down on the shank, which will rotate the shaft 23 and move the sliding jaw 7 through the medium of the bevel gear 22, the pinion 21 and the adjusting screw. After the jaw has been adjusted, the catch is released which will permit the same to engage one of the rack teeth and thus firmly lock the jaws in adjusted position.
This construction permits of the quick adjustment of themovable jaw and as fine an adjustment as may be desired can be obtained. Further, the hand grip is so arranged on the shank that as the distance between the movable jaw and the rigid jaw is increased the hand grip is moved down the shank and thus the'leverage of the hand grip is increased. Thus it will be seen that the leverage of the hand grip is increased in direct proportion to the size-of the nut en-' a ed.
g In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing'the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be re sorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
What I claim as new is:
1. A wrench of the class described comprising a hollow shank, a shaft rotatably carried by the shank having a spiral groove, an angularly related head carried by one terminal of the shank, a rigid jaw formed on the head, a sliding jaw carried by the head, an adjusting screw carried by the head, means operatively connecting the sliding jaw with the adjusting screw, 2. bevel pinion keyed to the screw, a bevel pinion keyed to the shaft and arranged to mesh with said pinion, a slidable hand grip mounted on the shank, a pin carried by the hand grip arranged to engage the spiral groove, a rack bar formed on the shank, and a slid'in catch carried by the hand grip and adapterf to engage the rack bar, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A wrench comprising a shank, a relatively movable and a relatively stationary aw carried by the forward end of the shank, means carried by the shank and operable to adjust the movable jaw with relation to the stationary jaw, and a hand grip movably forwardly on the shank to decrease the effective leverage of the tool and rearwardly thereon to increase the e cotive leverage of the tool and connects to sald'means to effect an adjustment of the movable jaw in the direction of the stationary jaw when moved forwardly on the shank and to effect an adjustment of the movable jaw in the reverse direction when moved rearwardly on the shank.
3. A wrench comprising a shank, a relatively movable and a relativelystationary jaw carried by the forward end of the shank, means carried by the shank and operable to adjust the movable jaw with relation to the stationary jaw, a hand grip movable forwardly on the shank to decrease the effective leverage of the tool and movable rearwardly thereon to increase the effective leverage of the tool and connected to said means to effect an adjustment of the movable jaw in the direction of the stationary jaw when moved forwardly on the shank and to effect an adjustment of the movable jaw in the reverse direction when moved rearwardly on the shank, and means adapted to lock the hand grip in its adjusted position upon the shank.
4. A wrench comprising a shank provided with a plurality of teeth, a relatively movable and a relatively stationary jaw carried by the forward end of the shank, means carried by the shank and operable to adjust the movable jaw with relation to the stationary jaw, a hand grip movable forwardly on the shank to decrease the effective leverage of the tool and rearwardly thereof to increase the effective leverage of the tool and connected to said means to effect an adjustment of the movable jaw in the direction of the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 1n presence of tWo Witnesses.
