Description
0. H. RULFS. ADJUSTABLE WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED JULYZS, 192l- Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL IilIE-NRY RULES, OF BANNISTER, TEXAS.
ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.
Application filed July 26,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. Hou s, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bannister, in the county of San Augustine, State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Adjustable wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to adjustable wrenches and has for its object to provide an adjustable wrench of the end type, and has for its object to provide a wrench of this character comprising a pair of elongated members having jaws at one of their ends and handles at their other ends, said elongated members being hinged together at their handle ends and normally forced apart adjacent their jaw ends by means of a spring. Also to provide adjusting means for adjusting said members outwardly and inwardly said adjusting means comprising a screw extending through an elongated aperture in one of the members adjacent its jaw and having its threaded end threaded into the other member adjacent its jaw, said screw having its head in engagement with the outer face of the apertured member and forming means for holding said member against outward movement during a wrenching operation.
With the above and other objects in viewthe invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the adjustable wrench.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the adjustable wrench.
' Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 designate elongated members, which members are provided with jaws 3, and 4 and handles 5 and 6. The handles 5 and 6 are hingedly connected together as at 7 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 487,779.
the jaws 3 and 4 are substantially in registration with each other. Member 2 is provided with an enlarged portion 8 adjacent its jaw 4, which portion is received in a recess 9 of the member 1 adjacent the jaw 3, said enlargement 8 has threaded therein at 10 the threaded shank 11 of the adjusting screw 12, which adjusting screw extends upwardly through an elongated aperture 13 in the head 8 and terminates in a head 14 which engages the conveXed surface 15 adjacent the jaw 3, and on which convexed portion the head 14 engages and is guided in its movement. It will be seen that when the jaws 3 and 4 are together as shown in Figure 3 that a standard size nut may be received, say for instance a half inch nut. However if a three-quarter, seveighths or one inch nut is to be held the jaws 3 and 4 are adjusted outwardly to receive the same, thereby allowing the same wrench to be used for various sizes of nuts. It is to be understood that the wrench may be made in any length or sizes desired and the standard distance between the jaws 3 and 4 varied according to the size of nuts to be received. During the outward adjustment of the jaws 3 and 4 said jaws are forced apart by means of the leaf spring 15, which leaf spring is secured at 16 to the member 1 and has its free end 17 disposed in an elongated slot 18 in the inner face of the member 2, which end 17 slides in said elongated slot during the inward and outward movement of the members 1.
From the above it will be seen that a wrench is provided which is simple in construction and one so constructed that various sizes of nuts may be received therein. It will also be seen that an adjustable end wrench is provided for receiving various sizes of nuts.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A wrench comprising a pair of elongated members having jaws at one of their ends and their other ends hingedly connected together, a leaf spring interposed between the members for normally forcing the same apart, the adjacent edges of said members adjacent their jaws being provided with interengaging enlargement and recess, an adjusting screw extending through one of said members and through the interengaging recess, said adjusting screw being threaded name to this specification in the presence of into the enlargement of the other member, two subscribingrwitnesses. said enlar 'ement and recess formin means 7 i c 7 whereby a? greater thread grip is p rovided V V CARL H RULPB' 5 for the screw, thereby preventing strip ing Witnesses:
of the threads. 7 O. L. EA'KIN.
In testimony whereof I have signed my BEN'THOMAS.
