Description

C. C. FINKHOUSEM WRENCH. APPLICAHON HLED JAN-4, I922.
1,415,826, Patented 9, 1922. j] 17 10 v j if 12 PATENT OFFICE.
CAREY C. FINKHOUSEN, 0]? WHEN. OHIO.
WRENCH.
Application filed January 1, 1922.
To all whom it may con cern.
Be it known that I, CAREY C. FINK- IIOUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVren, in the county of Van -Wort, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and usetul improvements in wrenches and particularly to adjustable rigid jaw wrenches.
One object of the invention is to provide awrench of the type having a rotatable head formed with a plurality o't nut engageable sockets of different sizes, and means for holding the heads in position to present any one of the sockets to the work.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character wherein the heads holding means also serves to hold a rotatable screwdriver elelnent carried in the other end of the handle shank.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanylng drawings.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of? a wrench made in. accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation viewed in a. plane at right angles to that of Figure 1.
F igure is a vertical. longitudinal sectional view on the line v i--23 ot l igure i2, ust inside of the side of the handle shank.
Figure 4.- is a transverse sectional view through the collar and shank, on the line 4&4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the side plates of the handle showing the modification thereof.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, the handle shank comprises a pair of side members 10, the opposite ends oithe members being rounded, as at 11, and centrally apertured, at 12. Between the ends of the members 10 of the handle shank are disposed the members 14. and 15.
The member 14: comprises a circular disk having a plurality of notch or recesses 1-1 in its periphery for engagement with work, and being of different sizes, as clearly seen in Figure 1. The member 14 mounted on a central. pivot 16, disposed through the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 9, 1922.
Serial No. 526,943.
disk and the apertures 12, at that end of the handle.
The member 15 is mounted on a pivot 17 disposed through said member and through the apertures 12, at the other end of the handle. The member 15 is formed with a screwdriver point 18 at each end, and of ditlerent sizes, each being arranged to extend beyond the end of the handle, when rotated into the position shown in Figure 1.
Slidablc longitudinally on the handle shank a collar 19, said collar being of such size to straddle the portion of the head 14:, which lies between two adjacent notches or recesses 14, for the purpose of n'iaintaining the head against rotation in the shank, while the tool is in operation. It will be particularly noted that the portions of the member 14:, between the recesses 1 1- are of equal width at their outer ends, and that such width slightly less than the longer inside dimension of the collar 19, so that when the collar engaged with any one oi? the said portions of the head 1 1, said head will. be held against any tendency to rotate.
It will be noted that the wider sides of the collar 19 are bowed inwardly toward the sides oi? the handle, as shown at 20, to frictionally engage therewith. and hold the collar against sliding.
lVhen one or the other of the screwdriver points is extended from the end of the handle. the collar 19 is slipped down to that end of the handle, and in position to close the open sides of the shank, so that the nieu'iber 15 cannot retain-3 within the handle while the exposed point is in use, the bowed sides otthe collar holding the same from sliding movement on the handle.
In F igure 5 there is shown a modification in the form of the handle, wherein the opposite ends of the side plates are slightly widened, as shown at 21, so that the collar 19 will wedge therewith for the purpose of neventing backward sliding movement oi the collar, while the tool is being used. When this form of handle is used the collar is provided with parallel sides, the inwardly bowed. sides of the first form of collar being unnecessary.
What is claimed is:
1. A tool including a shank, a member rotatable in one end of the shank and having a plurality of notches in its periphery with the outer ends 01 the portions intermediate the notches of substantially equal Width and a collar slidable on the shank and arranged to enter two adjacent notches of the rotatable member to embrace one of said.
to embrace one of said intermediate portions,
the Wider side portions of the collar being bowed inwardly for frictional engagement with the sides of the shank. 1.5 In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CAREY G. FINKHOUSEN.
