Application filed. April 23, 1923. Serial as. 633,893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM E. DRUM- MOND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chiefland, county of Levy, and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Socket Ratchet l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is in the way of a hand wrench, and may be more particularly described as a socket ratchet wrench for'the general use of mechanics. The chief object of the invention is to provide a relatively simple, strong, durable and eflicien wrench of the kind.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with the aws contracted;
Figure 2 is a similar View with the jaws ex anded;
Figure 4 is a detail of the handle, a part being broken away to show the mounting of the pawl;
Figure 5 is an end View of the shank;
Figure 6 is an end view of the two aws;
Figure 7 is a side view of the two jaws;
Figure 8 is a view of the inner sides or faces of the two jaws;
Figure 9 is a detail of the jaw bar;
Figure 10 is a detail of the V-shaped jaw spring;
Figure 11 is a detail of the thumb-stud.
In carrying out this invention, a hollow shank 1 is provided, the same being chambered or recessed out longitudinally from the bit end 2 toward the handle end 3, with the rectangular jaw-cavity 4, which has an elongated thumb-stud slot 5 opening outwardly at one side. Two tapered jaws 16 are provided, and adapted together to loosely fit up into the jaw. cavity 4, the said jaws having angular nut recesses 6 in their ends and so adapted, together, to properly engage an ordinary square nut; and having also the medial spring recesses 7 and the jaw-bar notches 8 at their ends; all of the said recesses being formed on the inner faces of the said jaws. A jaw-bar 9 is provided, having a shank portion 10 with the transverse thumb-stud hole 11 therein, and having an end cut away at the sides so as to form a draw head 12 adapted to be engaged by the two jaw bar notches 8. A V-shaped spring 13 is'f-ormed and adapted to fit into the spring recesses 7, and serves normally to -throw the jaws- 16 asunder as they move out of the jaw cavity 4. A thumb-stud 14 is formed with a stem 15' to tightly fit into the thumbstud hole 11. The elements so aforedescribed are assembled by fitting the end of the slot 5 and tightly into the hole 11 of the jaw bar 9, whereby these elements are firmly locked together. If desired,'in .order to more firmly lock the elements together, a pin 23 may be passed through the shank 1 and between the wings of the said V-shaped spring 13.
By moving the thumb-stud 14 back and forth in the slot 5, the jaws 16 are moved outwardly and expanded to the particular nut being worked upon, or may be moved inwardly for a smaller sized nut.
he opposite end of the shank 1 is reduced to the form of a circular ratchet 17, and a handle 18 is provided, the same having a ratchet hole 19 at one end thereof, and a pawl 20 pivoted at 21 in a lateral pawl slot 22 and adapted to engage the ratchet 17, and so lock the handle 18 in fixed rela tion to the shank 1, onsay the clock-wise turn of the handle 18, while permitting the handle to rotate freely over the rack whe turned in opposite direction The operation and us of this wrench is apparent from the description given.
While I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so
as best to construct a practical device for the purpos intended, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim: 7
A wrench of the kind described, comprising a shank having at one end a longitudinal rectangular jaw-cavity, and an elongated thumb-stud slot at one side communicating with the aw-cavity, the opposite end of the shank being reduced to a circular ratchet; a pair 01 tapered jaws to fit into the jawcavity, the jaws being recessed on their in ner contiguous faces to form nutengaging recesses, spring-engaging recesses, and jaw bar head engaging notches; a ti-shaped spring to fit into the said spring recesses of the a aw bar having a draw head adapted to be engaged by the said notches of the aws and having a transverse thumbstud hole in its shank portion; a thumb-stud having a stern adapted to pass through the thumb-stud slot of the shank and fit into the thumb-stud hole of the jaw bar; a pin. passed through the shank between the wings of the V-shaped spring; a handle having a ratchet hole adapted to engage the ratchet end of the said shank, and having a lateral pawl slot communicating with the ratchet hole; and a pawl pivotally mounted within said pawl slot and adapted to engage the circular ratchet of the shank.
