MORRIS MALLOVE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF TWENTY-SEVEN AND ONE- HALF PER CENT. TO JACOB GREENBERG- AND TWENTY-SEVEN AND ONE-HALF PER CENT. TO PHILLIP KIEVES, BOTH OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BASIN-PLUG- WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1920.
Application filed June 16,1919. Serial No. 304,585.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS MALLovE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Basin-Plug IVrenches, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to wrenches and is particularly designed as a basin plug wrench.
In applying the drain pipe and basin plug to a basin it has been found very diflicult to hold the plug against movement while mating the drain pipe to the same and one of the principal objects of this invention'is to provide a tool of the class described having expansible jaws adapted to fit into the basin plug for frictional engagement therewith.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the class described which is adjustable to fit varying sizes of basin plugs, the same being provided with means adapted to render a quick adjustment of the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the class described which may also be utilized as a socket wrench.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture *and eflicient in purpose.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts more fully described and pointed out in the following description and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with parts broken away to disclose the underlying structure.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional vlew therethrough.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view show-' ing a slightly modified form of the invention.
Fi 5 is a detail view of a slightly modi- Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1O
with a plurality of outwardly projecting handles 11 and lugs 12 to which are pivoted as at 13 the fingers 14. The fingers 14 are preferably provided with converging portions 15 and straight portions 16, the latter being provided on their outer surface with rubber buffers 17 which prevent the marring of the basin plug when the portions 16 are forced into. frictional contact therewith.
In order to radially adjust the fingers 14 relative of the handle, a spreader member 18 is provided which is preferably of conical formation and interiorly threaded as at 19 for the reception of the threaded portion 20 sleeve 10 for rotation. The upper extremity of the shaft 21 has secured thereto a head v 22 provided with a cross bar 23 whereby the same may be revolved by the operator.
In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the outer surfaces of the spreader are provided with the headed studs 24 which are adapted to engage and co-a'ct with the T-shaped slots 25 in the inner converging portions 15 of the fingers to contract the fingers upon upward movement of the spreader. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the leaf springs 26 are provided to return the fingers to their normal contracted position upon upward movement of the spreader.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the conical surfaces of the spreader 18 are preferably provided with the flanges 27 which partially embrace the converging portions 15 of the fingers to prevent lateral displacement of the same with relation to the spreader. As shown in Fig. 6, the inner surface of the straight portions 16 of the fingers are preferably serrated or knurled as at 28 whereby the device may be used as a socket wrench for engagement with a nut or bolt.
While I have illustrated and described several preferred forms of carrying the invention into practice, I do not desire to be limited to the exact details therein exhibited, but desire to'have it understood that such changes, and alterations as fall within the scope of the claim may be resortedto when desired.
What is claimed as new is:
A wrench of the class described comprising a" sleeve, constituting a handle, a. plurality of fingers pivoted thereon having conof the same, said spreader being interiorly verging portions and T-shaped slots formed threaded for the reception of the threaded 10 therein, a shaft journaled in said sleeve for portion of the shaft, and Iiieans carried by rotation having a threaded portion in its each of said fingers for frictional engagefree extremity, a conical spreader having a ment with a basin plug. plurality of headed studs adapted to enter In testimony whereof I have affixed my the T-shaped slots in the converging porsignature.
