i To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that we, WILLIAM O. SINGER and BERNARD SINGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Cresson, inthe county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Wrenches, of which the following'is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to wrenches and particularly to a quick adjustable wrench. An object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character capable of being adjusted by the hand that holds the wrench.
Another object is to provide awrench. of
this character having a novel adjusting sleeve disposed adjacent one end of the handle, saidsleeve not only provided adjusting means for the wrench but serving as a handle to permit the operator to obtain a firm grip.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character wherein the adjustable jaw is slidable on the shank of thefixed jaw and is adjusted longitudinally of said shank by meanslof a rotatable sleeve, said sleeve being prevented from longitudinal movement on the shank by the end portion thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character including a shankhaving its end reduced and threaded, said threaded end being adapted to receive a nut, said nut preventing disengagement of the slidable jaw and rotatable sleeve from the shank of the wrench.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention.

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a shank substantially rectangular in cross section, and having formed on one end a fixed jaw 6. of the reduced portion. Two shoulders 10 and 11 are formed by the collar, the purpose of which will behereinafter described.
A movable jaw 12 is provided, said jaw ncluding a tubular extension 13, a bore being formed in the bore in the jaw and extension corresponding to the shape of the shank 5 so as to prevent lateral movement of the saw and extension on the shank.- The jaw 12 is slidably mounted on the shank, the exterior surface of the extenslon being threaded. It will be noted that there are no threaded or like means between the slidable jaw and the shank.

vided with a central opening 16, corresponding in diameter to the exterior surface of the collar 9. By this means the end 15 engages the shoulder; 10 so as to preventlongitudinal movement of the sleeve on the shank 5.
To prevent disengagement of the movable user to obtain a firm grip nearer the jaw of the wrench so that greater leverage is provided. It will be noted that the end of the nut 17 is limited in its movement by means of the shoulder 11 so that while it holds the sleeve on the shank, it does not interfere with its rotary movement but instead provides a bearing surface for the end 15 of the sleeve. Should repairs or cleaning be necessary the nut 17 may be removed to permit disengagement of the sleeve 14 and movable jaw 12 from the shank 5 without the necessity of cutting rivets or loosening addi tional fastening means.
In use, the jaw 12 is slidable at all times on the smooth shank 5 and as there are no threaded or like means between the shank and the jaw 12, the bracing action is not interfered with. When it is desired to adjust the wrench, the sleeve 14 is rotated on the shank 5 thereby causing the threaded extension 13 to move inWa dIy or outwa dly of the sleeve 14 according to the adjustment wrench, the threads permitting finest adjustment possible to be made and as the extension 13 is relatively long a considerable portion thereof is disposed practically at all times within the sleeve 14:. This feature together with the bracing action of the shank eliminates stripping of thethreads and permits the tightest nut to be readily moved. This operation is of course assisted by the enlarged hand gripping surface formed by the cooperation of the nut 17 and the relatively long sleeve .14.
"From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of wrench capable of being quickly adjusted without moving the adjusting means longil end' reduced and threaded; a shoulder formed at the base of the reduced portion,

In addition to this the sleeve and sliding jaw also asslst to strengthen the wrench as itwill be noted that the only portion of the shank exposed is V aws 5 and 6.
What is claimed is 2-- 1. A wrench of the character described comprising a shank, said shank having its a second shoulder formed between the reduced portion andthe first mentioned shoulder, a slidable jaw including a threaded extension slidably mounted on the shank, an adjusting sleeve having a partially closed end adapted to receive the extension of the jaw, said partially closed end being also adapted to engage the first mentioned shoulder, and a nut threaded on said extension into engagement with the second mentioned shoulder, said second mentioned shoulder preventing longitudinalmovement and permitting unrestricted rotary movement of the sleeve on the shank and extension of the slidable jaw.
