Patented .luiy 17, 1923.,
UNHTED STATES THOMAS IVI. RENICK, OFMORG-A'NTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed December 31, 1921.
` gantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful lVrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to wrenches` the primary object of the invention being to provide a quickaoting wrench, and one which may be operated in places where space is limited.
Another object of the invention is to provide a'wrench wherein the operating handle ymay be adjusted with respect to the body portion thereof, to facilitate the use of the wrench.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a removable head constructed to receive a plurality of aws of various sizes.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de# scribed and claimed, it being` understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed. may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts thereof being brel-:en away to illustrate the operating means. n
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the j aw supporting head.
l Figure 3 is a front elevational view of a wrench.
Figure 4- is a view of the removable jaw;r
The opposite end of the body portion 5 isv internally threaded as at 8 to accommodate the threaded bearing member 9 in which the operatingr shaft 10 moves. Disposed within Serial No. 526,211.
the body portieri is a securing collar 11 which ismounted on the ,operating shaft 10, and is formed with an opening to accommodate the screw 12 which has its threaded portion embedded in a suitable opening in the operating shaft 10 to secure the collar 11 to the shaft. This collar is shown as abutting one end of the bearing member 9 to restrict movement of the operating shaft 1() longitudinally of the bodyY portion 5, but permit-the same to rotate freely.
@ne end of the operating shaft 10 is formed with a squaredhead 13 fitted within a correspondingly-shaped'sleeve 14 forming a part of the beveled gear 15, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth 16 of the sleeve The sleeve 17 is mounted for rotation within the head 18, and is formed with a squared opening to accommodate the jaws 19, which may be of various sizes to adapt the tool forpuse with nuts ot various sizes. Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the jaws 19 may be readily and easily removed and replaced eliminating the necessity of employing securing means for supporting the same.
The heard 18 has a circular portion 20 ex-y tending at right angles thereto` which circular portion 2O is formed with internal threads to be positioned'on the threads T of the body portion 5 to secure the head 18 to the body portion.
The outer end of the operating shaft 10 is formed with a squared portion 21 adapted to accommodate the section 22 of the handle, the section 22 being formed with a squared opening to lit over the squared portion 21. A nut 23 is also positioned on one end of the operating shaft 10 to secure the handle thereto.
Formed in the section 22` is an elongated opening 24 adapted to accommodate the bolts 25 that are carried by the section 26 of the operating handle, winged nuts 27 being provided on the bolts 25 to secure the sections 22 and 2G together. From the foregoing it will be seen that the section 26 may be adjusted with respectv to the section 22 to lengthen or shorten the operating handle and facilitate the use of the wrench in corners or places where the operating space is restricted.
It might be further stated that the body portion 5, which yin operation is gripped by one hand of the operator, is formed with a knurled Surfare indicated at 28 to insure against the Wrench slipping' in the hands oil the` operator.
l/Vhat is claimed as new is:-
In a Wrench, a tubular body portion having an enlargement at one end thereof, and having external threads, a sleeve positioned Within the enlargement, said sleeve having' teeth at one end thereof providing` a beveled gear, a head having,r a .circular 'threaded portion adapted to be positioned over the threaded portion of the enlargement to cure the head to the tubular body portion, said head extending` laterally from one end of the tubular body portion, a sleeve earry TOME/HE M. RENCK.
