the character specified especially adaptedv for connecting a scrubbing brush, mop, sand block or the like to a handle in such manner that the utensils may be interchanged, and be used with the same handle. i
In the drawings: Figure l is a top view of the improved tool connected with a scrubbing brush;
Fig. 2 is an end view, with a part of the socket broken away;
Fig. 3 is a front view.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown used for connecting a scrubbing brush 1 of ordinary construction with a handle 2. This brush, as shown, has the back thereof provided at each side edge with a longitudinally extending groove 3, and these grooves 3 are adapted to be engaged by the tool which connects the handle with the brush.
The improved tool consists of two sections, one of the sections 4 beinginthe form of a plate having one edge curved into hook shape, as indicated at 5, and having a socket 6 near the said edge on the upper face of the section. The other section 7 of the tool is also a plate having one side edge curved into a hook 8, and at the other edge the plate has a pair of'laterally extending lugs 9. These lugs 9 are ofiset upwardly from theplane of the plate and are adapted to lap upon the plate 4. This plate 4 has openings in line longitudinally thereof and at approximately the center of the plate, and has roughened or corrugated portions at each opening. The
lugs 9 of the section 7 have slots 12 which are adapted to register with the openings in plate 4, and on each side of the slots the lugs are roughened or corrugated.
Set screws 13 are passed upwardly through the registering openings of the slots and each screw is engaged by a wing nut 14. By means of the screws and nuts the sections of the tool or connector may be clamped upon the brush back, the hooked edges 5 and 8 Copies of this patent may be obtained tor engaging within the grooves 3. Each plate 4 and 7 has longitudinally extending slots 15 at the curved portions, and these slots are adapted to engage pins 16 on the brush back. Thus a limited movement of the connector is permitted with respect to the brush.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, a sleeve 24 is provided for encircling the handle 2 above the socket 6. A bracket rod 25 connects this sleeve with the section 7 of the connector, and a coil spring 26 is arranged between the sleeve and the adjacent end of the socket, the spring acting normally to push the sleeve upward. To release the tool, pressure is made on the sleeve, which pushes the section 7 away from the section 6 and loosens the holder onthe tool.
In addition to permitting the difierent tools to be interchanged, the device permits the brush, sand block or the like to be reversed, so that the bristles or sand paper may wear uniformly. With the usual type of brush, when the brush becomes worn, both handle and brush must be discarded. With the present construction one handle may be used-indefinitely. In addition, it is not necessary to get down on the knees in order to scrub, sandpaper or the like. The connector may be made of anysuitable or desired material and the handle may be secured to the socket 6, if desired.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character specified, a sectional means for. engaging a tool, the sections of saidmeans being movable toward andfrom each other into and outof engaging position, one section carrying a socket for a handle. and the other a sleeve in sub stantial alinement with the socket, said sleeve and socket being spring held in spaced rela f tion for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the character specified, a tool engaging means consisting of sections movable toward and from each other to engage and disengage the tool, one section carrying a socket for a handle and the other a five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. 0.
