UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS VVIRSCHING, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
VETERINARY DENTAL FILE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,407, dated January 19, 1897. Application filed July 28, 1896. Serial No. 600,799. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS WIRSOHING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Dental and other Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to dental tools for veterinary purposes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved tool of this class which is specially designed for use on the teeth of horses, but which may be used for many other purposes; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tool; Fig. 2, a similar view of a portion thereof on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a sectional plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. at a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
One of the chief objects of this invention is to provide a file or other tool for operating on the teeth of horses, and in the practice thereof I provide a file 5, which consists of an oblong plate which is provided with a filing-surface on its under side, and which is mounted in and adapted to slide in a casing 6, which is open at its lower side, and the sides of which are provided with inwardlydirected flanges 7, by which the file is held in place, and passing through the back of the casing 6 is a set-nut 8, by which said file is secured in any desired position.
Formed on or secured to one end of the casing 6 and centrally of the back thereof are two jaws 9, between which is pivoted a tubular head 10 by means of a bolt 11, and said head is provided at one side with a screwthreaded shank 12, and I also provide a shaft 13, having a tubular screw-threaded head 14, into which the shank 12 passes, and mounted on the shaft 13 is a tubular sleeve 15, provided in one side thereof with a longitudinal slot 16, at each end of which is formed a circular enlargement or opening 17, and passing through the slot 16 and secured to the shaft 13 is a set-screw 18, and said sleeve is adapted to be adjusted on the shaft 13 at any desired point, andmay be drawn outwardly until the set-screw l8 enters the circular opening 17 at the inner end thereof, or said sleeve may be shoved inwardly in the direction of the file until the set-screw 18 enters the opening 17 at the outer end of said sleeve, and the said sleeve is provided with a handle 19.
The jaws 9 are provided at their ends with vertical faces 20, which are in line with the end of the casing 16 and with backwardly-inclined faces 21, and each jaw is also provided with a backwardly-inclined slot 22, which communicates with the opening through which the bolt 11 passes, and the upper end of which is enlarged, as shown at 23.
By means of this construction the handle or shaft 13 and the sleeve 15 may be held rigidly in line with the casing 6, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, or at an angle thereto of about forty-five degrees, as shown in dotted lines in said figure, this result being accomplished by simply turning the handle to the left, so as to loosen the connection between the head 14: of the shaft 13 and the shank 12 of the tubular head 10, after which the handle may be turned into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and be again tightened by turning said handle to the right, and said handle may also be again moved into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 by reversing this operation.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof as herein described, as it is eviwith a tubular sleeve which is mounted on a shaft provided with a tubular head, said tubular head being pivotally connected with said jaws, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a veterinary dental instrument, the combination with a suitable casing adapted to receive a tool, and provided with jaws as 9, which are formed on the back thereof, of a handle provided with a tubular sleeve which is mounted on a shaft provided with a tubular head, said tubular head being pivotally connected with said jaws, by means of a screw-threaded shaft provided with a head which is pivoted within said jaws, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a veterinary dental instrument the combination with a suitable casing, in which is mounted a file, and which is provided with jaws formed thereon, of a handle provided with a tubular sleeve which is mounted in a shaft provided with a tubular head, said tubular head being pivotally connected with said jaws by means of a screw, the head of which is pivoted between said jaws, said sleeve being longitudinally adjustable on said shaft, and said handle being adapted to be held in a horizontal position with reference to said casing or at an angle thereto, substan- 4 day of July, 1896.
LOUIS WIRSOHING. Vitnesses:
