HEAD-REST FOR BARBERS CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed. December 2, 1908. Serial No. 465,674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT S. WALLACE, citizen of the United States, residing at Forney, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head Rests for Barbers Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in head rests such as are commonly employed upon barbers, dentists and surgeons chairs and the like, and the object of the invention is the provision of a head rest of this character which is peculiarly mounted so that it may be readily moved from side to side, thereby enabling the head of the occupant of the chair to be turned by the operator without the necessity of lifting the head or causing the occupant of the chair to move any muscles except those used in turning the head.
The invention further contemplates a laterally movable head rest which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, can be readily applied to any chair, and can be quickly moved either into an operative or inoperative position.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a head rest constructed in accordance with the invention; and, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the same.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a plate which is provided at one of its edges with a laterally extending flange 2 to which a head rest 3 is secured, the said head rest being of any approved type. A longitudinal slot 4 is formed in the plate 1 and this slot receives a pair of rollers 5, the said rollers being grooved for engagement with the edges of the slot so that the plate can move freely back and forth upon the rollers but is prevented from being disengaged therefrom. Each of these rollers is journaledwithin the bifurcated end of one of the arms of a fork member 6, the said arms of the fork member diverging from each other and the lower end of the fork member being formed with the flattened portion 6 which is arranged in a plane at right angles to the plane of the rollers. A bolt 7 passes through this flattened portion 6 of the fork and pivotally connects the fork to the upper end of a standard 8 which is designed to be secured to the back of the chair so as to project upwardly above the same. The meeting faces of the standard 8 and the flattened portion 6 of the fork, are roughened or milled so that when the bolt 7 is tightened the fork is held securely in position. However, when this bolt is loosened the fork member together with the plate 1 and head rest 3 carried thereby, may be tilted to any desired angle, or swung rearwardly into an inoperative position. When utilized by a barber the head rest will be locked in an upright position when the occupant of the chair is being shaved and will be swung rearwardly into an inoperative position when he is having a hair-cut. In the former instance the plate 1 and head rest carried thereby can be readily moved from side to side for the purpose of turning the head, and a set screw 9 threaded in a bar 10 connecting the arms of the fork member 6 and engaging the plate 1, is utilized for locking the head rest against movement.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a standard, a forked member pivotally mounted upon the standard, a roller journaled upon each arm of the forked member, a plate slotted to receive the rollers and slidably mounted thereon, and a head rest carried by the plate.
2. The combination of a standard, a forked roller carrying member pivotally mounted upon the standard, a roller journaled upon each arm of the forked roller carrying member, a slotted plate loosely receiving the rollers and slidable thereon, a head rest carried by the plate, a bar connecting the arms of the forked member, a set screw threaded within the bar and contacting the plate to lock the plate against movement.
3. A device as specified comprising a ment with said plate to clamp the same in standard, a forked member adjnstably caradjusted position. 13 ried by said standard, rollers mounted in In testimony whereof I aflix my signature transverse alinement in said forked member in presence of two witnesses.
