ATTACHABLE ROGKER FOR CHAIRS.

ATTACHABLE ROCKER FOR CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part rof Letters Patent No. 304,435, dated September 2, 1884.

Application filed October 17,1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, VEsLEY MALIGK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Erie and St-ate of Pennsylvania, have .invented a new and useful Attachable Rocker for Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to rockers for chairs; and it has for its object to provide rockers of simple and inexpensive construction which may be readily applied to chairs of ordinary construction for either temporary or permanent use.

The invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a perspective view of a chair equipped with my improved rockers. Fig. 2 is a longitudi` nal vertical Afsectional view taken through one of the rockers. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rockers detached, showing how the fastenings which serve to attach it to a chair may be folded for shipment. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views in perspective of the fastenings detached.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

A in the drawings refers to one of the rockers, which, as shown, I prefer to make of bent wood and with a broad iiat tread. By this construction cheap, durable, and efficient rockers may be produced.

B designates the front clamp orvfas'tening. This consists of a lug, C, securedto the rocker, near the front end of the same, by means of screws D or other fastenings, and having a hinged upright, D', which may be folded in a rearward direction down flat upon the face of the rocker. The front side of the upright D is provided near the upper end olf the same with lugs E E, between whichis hinged an ob long or elliptical ring, F, having a set-screw, G, provided at its inner end with a swivelcd clip, H, which is curved, as shown, so that it will readily embrace one side of an ordinary chair-lee. The rear side of the upright D is provided with curved lugs I I, and with a point or prong, J, which will in practice enter the chair-leg, thus making the attachment secure.

K designates the rear fastening, which comprisesa frame, L, suitably secured tothe rocker, and having raised sides or rails M M, under which slide the arms of an inverted-T-shaped upright, N, the ends of said arms being provided with knobs O, to keep the upright in position in the frame. The upper end of theupright N is provided on the iront side of the same with a pair of curved lugs, l? l?, and a pin or prong, Q. Its rear side has a pair of lugs, R It, between which is hinged a ring, S,

'adapted to swing over in front of theupright,

so as to embrace the rear chair-leg, and provided with a set-screw, T, having a swiveled clip, U.

The operation of thisinvention willbe readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The rear clamp or fastening may be readily adjusted, so as to enable the rocker to be 'fitted upon chairs in which the front and rear legs are unequal distances apart, all that is necessary to attach the rockers being simply to place the chair-legs within the rings ot' the respective clamps or iasteniugs and to tighten the set-screws. This, as is evident, may be donc in a moment7 s tin-1c, thus enabling an ordinary chair-,to be converted intoarockcr with little trouble.l

My improved rocker attachment is simple, convenient, and inexpensive, and it will be noticed by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the i'astenings may be folded down iat upon the rockers, so as to occupy but little space, thus rendering the device convenient for shipment.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The front clamp or fastening, comprising a lug, C, an upright hinged thereto, a ring hinged at one end to the upper end of the upright and adapted to be swung over the same,

a set-screw having a swiveled clip and working through the other end of the ring, rearwardly-curved lugs near the upper end of the upright, and a pin or prong located between the said lugs, as set forth.

2. The rearclamp or fastening, the same comprising a frame having raised sides, anin- IOO verted-T-,shztped upright, u ring hinged atthe sisting of the open frame L, invertedT-Shaped upper rear end of said upright adapted to upright sliding at its lower end in said frame,

swing over the same, and provided with :t seta ring hinged to the T-shaped upright, and a I5 screw having a swveled clip and forwardlysetscrew with swiveled clip working through 5 curved lugs, and a pin or prong located bethe ring, as set forth.`
