Description

(No Model.) W. E. GANEDYL GOMBINED ANVIL'AND VISE.
No. 426,362. Patented Apr. 22, 1890".

' UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEIGE.
WILLIAM E. OANEDY, or DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR oE-oNE- HALF TO WILLIAM H. EDWARDS, or sAME PLACE.
COMBINED ANVIL AND VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent No. 426,362, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed July 2, 1889;
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM E. CANEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Downers Grove, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Combined Anvil and Vise 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part-of this specification. I
This invention relates to a combined anvil and vise, its object being to devise a simple and efficient means for connecting the vise with the anvil, and which will admit of the Vise being readily and easily detached from the anvil when it is desired to use the latter only.
' A further object of theinvention is the construction of a vise that can be used either as a pipe or smiths Vise, and which will be equally efficient in either capacity as a vise constructed for the especial purpose.
The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully decribed and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of theinvention; Fig. 2, a central cross-section of the vise and anvil; Fig. 3, a side view of the anvil; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the inner leg of the vise.
The anvil A is hollow and has an oblong opening a in its side, the greatest length of the opening a being in the direction of the length of the anvil.
The viseis composed of the two legs B and O, which are pivoted together at their lower ends, and is secured to the anvil by the projection D on the rear of the leg 0. This projection has an oblong-shaped head (1, which corresponds with the opening a, and which has its Serial No. 316,278. (No model.)
greatest axis parallel with the length of the leg. To secure the vise to the anvil, the former is placed in a horizontal position and the proj ection D passed through the opening a, when the vise is turned into a vertical position, causing the oblong head (1 to set crosswise of the said opening and hold the vise in position, as will be readily understood. The projection is bored to receive the screw E, which passes through the leg B and screws into the nut K, set in a recess in the said projection D to bring the jaws of the legs B and 0 together. The spring F, mounted on the screw E and arranged between the legs, forces the latter apart when the screw E is turned out.
The jaws of each of the legs B and C have a straight face H and a V-shaped groove 7L parallel with the upper edge of the jaw and below the face ll, forming the two cuttingedges 1' and j, which latter bite into the pipe and hold it from rotating.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The l1U16l11-Cl6SC1lb6CI vise, having a projection, as D, provided with an oblong head, as d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the anvil having an oblong opening, of the vise having a looking projection provided with a corresponding oblong head, substantially as set forth.
an oblong opening, of the vise having alocking projection that is bored and recessed to receive a nut, and which is provided with an oblong head, and the screw, substantially as described.
111 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM E. CANEDY.
