Description

few
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL C. JACKSON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,109, dated May 29, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL (l. JACKSON, of Rochester, in the count-y of Monroe and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare thel following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is-an elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 `is a View of the nut and rack, the handle being removed.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
My invention consists in a screw-nut surrounding the stationary bar of the wrench and actin g upon a sectional screw-rack that extends from the moving jaw in a groove in said stationary bar, and these parts are combined with a metallic socket at the end of the handle, against the face of which the side of the said nut revolves.
In the drawings, a .is the stationary jaw at the end of the bar b, which is prismatic and forms the slide for the moving jaw c, and this jaw c is extended toward the handle d in the form of Va bracket, c', and behind this bracket c', and extending down to the handle, is a sectional screw-rack, e, which occupies a recess or groove in the bar b. The bar b is extended through the handle d and secured by a nut,f, and g is a screw-nut the thread of which takes the threads of the sectional screw-rack c. The
bar b, near the junction thereof with the handle, is rounded, as seen in Fig.- 3, so that the nut g may freely turn thereon, and both said rounded portion of b and the rack e passing through said nut, the interior ofthe nut is so lled that the threads on the nut are kept properly in contact with the threads of the rack.
' Atv the end of the handle d next the nut g is a metallic socket, h, having an opening at the end for passing the bar b, and anotch adjoining said opening for the rack c, so that the same may pass into the handle when the jaws ofthe wrench are open, and the end of this socket h takes the side of the nut g to support the same.
It will be evident that my improved wrench is very simple, strong, easily constructed,'has but few part-s, the screw-rack is protected from injury, and there is very little liability for the parts to become obstructed or to wear out in use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sectional screw-rack extending from the bracket cl of the moving jaw c, and occupying a groove in the bar b, in combination with the nntg, surrounding said bar b contiguous to the socket 7b, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 31st day of March, A. D. 1866.
J. C. JACKSON.
