PATENT OEEIcE.
GEORGE MOKEROHER, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE MOKEROHER WRENCH & TOOL COMPANY, OF JACKSON, MICHI- GAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,169, dated September 27, 1904.
Application filed January 11, 1904.
Be it known that I, GEORGE MoKERoHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jack- Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, especially pipe-wrenches.
It has for its object to promote simplicity and efficiency in the use of the wrench or tool and to lessen the cost of manufacture of the same.
The invention consists of the detailed construction and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in central section, of a wrench made in accordance with my invention with a portion of one jaw removed disclosing the movable jaw-retaining slide and its spring. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line m r0 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the slide.
Latitude is allowed herein as to changes in details which may come within the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In the practice of my invention I provide a fixed handled jaw l and a movable jaw 2, both of the same general form as shown in my former patents, and therefore in that respect need no further disclosure. Said movable jaw, also as in said patents, has its rack or ratchet portion 2 engaging a retaining cross pin or bolt 3. i This jaw is removably held in place in said fixed jaw under the action of a slide or plate 4, having a bevel-surfaced notch 5 in its jaw-engaging end to prevent its lateral or twisting movement with relation to said movable jaw. Said spring-pressed slide permits the movable jaw to be slid from notch Serial No. 188,602. (No model.)
to notch in effecting its adjustment or application to the pipe or other article gripped. Said slide is also, preferably, provided with an operating-knob 6 on its outer surface and has an inwardly-standing lug 7, preferably square to conform to the slot in the fixed jaw having a longitudinal slot therethrough. Anchored in any suitable manner in said fixed jaw, and extending longitudinally within the slot therein just below the upper edge is a pin or post 8, having mounted-thereon a spiral spring 9, adapted to be compressed on said pin by the lug on the slide, the pin engaging the slot in the lug.
Some of the advantages of this style spring are that it allows greater opening of the movable jaw without injury to the spring, it increases the adjustment and makes it more easy to manipulate, and altogether makes a more complete wrench for use on burs, 8:0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wrench, the combination with a fixed, and a movable, member, of apin anchored in a slot in said fixed member, and a springpressed slide mounted on said pin, and having one end adapted to bear upon said movable member, said slide serving to close said slot.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a fixed, and a movable, member, and a pin anchored in said fixed member, of a spring-pressed slide, having a perforated lug engaging said pin, and having one of its ends adapted to bear upon said movable member, substantially as set forth.
3. In a Wrench, the combination with a fixed, and a movable, member, and a pin anchored in said fixed member, of a spring-pressed slide mounted on said pin and having one of its ends adapted to bear upon said movable member, said slide having an operating-knob, substantially as set forth.
4. In a wrench, the combination with a fixed, and a movable, member, and a pin anchored in said fixed member, of a spring-pressed slide mounted on said pin and having a bevelsurfaced slot in one end adapted to bear upon said movable member, substantially as set forth.
5. A wrench comprising a fixed, and a movable, member, said fixed member having a slot therethrough in which said movable member works, a pin anchored in said fixed memher, and a spring-pressed slide on the surface of said fixed member, and having an inwardlyextending perforated lug mounted on said pin, said slidehaving one end bearing against 1 said movable member, substantially as set forth;
In testimony whereof I afijx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
