lirrnn JEROME B. \VILDER, 0F LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 824,907, dated August 25, 1885 Application filed April 16, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME B. W1LnEn,a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Vise; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combination vise, one that is equally serviceable for use as a pipe or rod vise or a flat-face vise, the object being to provide a vise which will combine in one article the excellences of the various kinds now in use, and dispense with the trouble and cost of having one vise for one kind of work and a separate one for another kind of work; and my invention consists of a vise having jaws fashioned to receive detachable and reversible dies, and, further, in certain peculiarities of construction, as hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, .illustratingmy invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved vis Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same on the line .r 5v of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower jaw of the vise below the line y 3 of .lrig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section of one of the removable dies in its frame.
Figs. 5 and (5 are different sides of one of the dies, Fig. 5 showing the side adapted for a pipe-vise, and, Fi 6 showing a flat face.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
A represents the iron frame of the vise, through the head of which passes the screw 1:), provided on one end with a wheel, 0, for its convenieit manipulation, and carrying at the lower end thejaw 1). The jaw D may be preferably provided in its rear portion with ilan It It, which keep it in correct position while sliding along the frame A. The jaw 1), and also the corresponding lower jaw, E, are both constructed to form boxes or frames for the insertion of detachable and reversible dies. These dies F F each have one face, f,
prefeably roughened or corrugated, which (No model.)
fits them to be used as a flat face vise for smiths, wood workers, 800., and another face, g, which fits them to be used as a pipe or rod vise for plumbers and the like. Around the middle of the die extends a projection which fits into slots in either side of the box 1) or E, as shown Fig. 4. After a die has been so in serted it can be firmly held in position by placing over it the retaining-piece d or c and securing it tightly by means of screws. It will thus be noticed that thereis no difference of construction between the die which is to be placed in the lower jaw and the one to be placed in the upper jaw, and they may he used interchangeably.
When it is desired to have a pipe-vise, the dies must be placed within their frames with faces 9 toward each other. These faces are formed with projections h h, which lie closer together in one direction than in the other, thus forming bearings of different sizes for differentsizesofpipes. The dies, beingsquarc, can be readily turned so as to bring either line of bearings into position to receive the pipe or rod. When a fiat-face vise is wanted,
the position of the dies is to be reversed, so
that the faces f will confront each other.
The eminent advantages to be derived from this style of C0lIlblIlZtUO1l-YlSG can be seen at a glance. The device may be applied in any position to a bench eilher by turning it lengthwise or sidewise to the attaching object, and in no position will it lose its effectiveness or facility of operation. It unites in a single article'rhe various advantages possessed by the many other kinds of vises, without any corre sponding increase in the cost of construction or the diffieulty of operation.
In addition to the flanges 7t it, or in lieu thereof, the upper jaw, l), maybe provided on each side with a curved guide, m, Fig. 3, adapted to bear against the sides of the frame A and prevent the jaw I) from springin forward while in operation.
It will be observed that the projections h h on the dies F are so arranged as to accnratel y center the pipe or rod to be held. It may also beremarked that the dies F, instead of being rectangular, as shown, may have six or eight sides, or other polygonal form; or they may be made circular, ifdesired, withoutafiectr ing the purpose of myinvention.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure byIetters Patent, is
1. A pipe and-rod c mbination-rise consisting of a s'ippoit ng frame, A, recessed jaws D E, and detachable and reversible diesFF, inserte l within these jaws, and whose upper and lower faces are adapted to serve, respectively, a a flat-faced vise and as a pi pe-vise, snbst: n- Iially as shown and described.
2. In a vise, the combination of a fixed jaw, E, and movable jaw D, both of which are formed for receiving dies,-and are provided with retaining-pieces d e, 'l'or locking said dies in position, substantially as described and shown.
3. In a pipe-vise, the combination, with the jaws D E, of the reversible dies F F, each of which is formed on one side with a flat roughened face, f, and on the oppposite side with projections h 72 that lie closer together in one direction than in the other, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: JEROME B. WILDER.
