Description
J. F. HALL. Pipe-Grip for Vises.
No. 211,993. I Patented Feb. 4,1879.
'YVITNESSES W I ATTORNEY FFICE.
JAMES 1*. HALL, OF HAVANA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-GRIPES FOR VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,993, dated February 4, 1879; application filed 1 December 21, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. HALL, of Havana, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pipe-Gripes for Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a face view of my improved vise attachment. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof applied to a vise; and Fig. 3 is a representation of details of the attachment.
This invention has relation to improvements in pipe or round-iron holders for carpenters or blacksmiths vises; and it consists in the combination, with the jaws of a vise, of two jaw-pieces, one of which is U-shaped in crosssection, and the other constructed with a plate adapted to work into and out of the slot formed in the U-shaped piece, said jawpieces being pivoted to base-pieces detachably secured to the jaws, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letters A A designate the jaws of a blacksmiths vise, in connection with which I illustrate my invention. These jaws have each a bearing-iace, a, and below it a receding transverse recess, I), and they are adjusted toward each other by the usual appliances;
B B represent the adjustable jaws for holding pipes, round-iron bars, and other similar objects. These are composed each of a base, 0, and a jaw-piece proper, lettered D.
The bases 0 C have each a straight edge, 0, conforming to the bearing-faces a a ofthe jaws, and below it a rounded portion, 0, fitting snugly into the recesses I). They are also provided with projecting lugs d, perforated to receive the screws 6, by means of which the said bases are removably secured to the jaws A A.
I do not, however, confine myself to this precise mode of securing the bases to the jaws, as there are other equivalent devices which would prove equally effective.
The jaw-pieces D D are secured so as to vibrate vertically to the bases by means of pivot-bolts p, and they are provided in their contiguous faces with angular recesses f, one
or more in number. These are directly opposite each other, and their sides are serrated, formed in zigzag outlines, or roughened, the object being to obtain a firm hold upon the round object.
The jaw D is U-shaped in section, as shown in Fig. 3, being-bifurcated, the arms g g having between them a space, 9 in which the arm of the jaw-piece D readily enters, the object of this construction being to allow the said jaws to pass each other and gripe a pipe or round bar of small size without causing it to be tilted to one side, the spaced arms or plates 9 and the single arm or plate effectually preventing any such tendency.
The recesses f, when more than one is used,
are of different dimensions to suit diiferent I sizes of pipes or round iron. A pipe having been introduced in one of the said recesses and the jaws caused to bite thereon, it may be vibrated to any desired position from the vertical to the horizontal plane without opening the jaws, owing to the fact that the jaw-pieces are pivoted to the bases.
The attachments above set forth are made of metal in iron-working, but in wood-working may be formed of hard wood.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the jaws A A of a vise, and detachable plates secured to the same, of the vibrating jaw-pieces D D, one of which is U-shaped in section, forming a slot, 9 into which the plate g of. the other jaw is adapted to work, substantially as specified.
2. In a vise, the combination of the vibrating jaw-pieces, one of which is U-shaped in cross-section, forming a slot, g into which the plate 9 of the other is adapted to work, said jaw-pieces being provided with one or more angular serrated recesses for grasping the work, substantially as Specified.
3. In combination with the jaws A A, provided with bearing-faces a a and receding transverse recesses Z) I), the base-pieces O 0, having straight edges 0 c conforming to the bearing-faces a a of the jaws, and fitting into the recesses b I), the said base-pieces being 1 detaehably secured to the jaws, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. HALL.
